CCTV cameras, pay-parking in Margao soon

The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) will install CCTV cameras at several locations and introduce pay-parking areas to tackle traffic congestion. MMC chairperson Damodar Shirodkar said a committee constituted under the chief officer identified 15-16 locations for the installation of CCTV cameras in congested areas.
It met with the RTO, police, and MMC officials to finalise the spots.
'Installation of cameras will be fully funded by the MMC. Also, we are moving forward with pay parking at 4-5 locations,' Shirodkar said. CCTV cameras installed at various places years ago under the MP Local Area Development scheme went beyond repair, primarily due to poor maintenance.
The chairperson also said that the proposed hydraulic pay-parking system will materialise soon. The project is being implemented through the Goa State Urban Development Agency, which has already invited expressions of interest. However, the progress of the project is shrouded in secrecy.
Opposition councillors, meanwhile, have slammed the MMC's 'announcement politics'. Earlier pay-parking proposals for Margao Square, Fatima Convent, and Isidore Baptista Road never got off the ground, they said.

Addressing urban traffic issues, Sarnaik announced that a comprehensive parking policy will be rolled out across the state by next year to tackle congestion in cities like Thane and Mumbai. Maharashtra gets it's first e-tractor; registered at Thane RTO
MUMBAI: Transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Saturday launched the electric tractor for farmers in Maharashtra. He said it will be eco-friendly and economical, and significantly transform the agricultural sector. The first such e-tractor — which Sarnaik claimed is the first of its kind in the country — was registered at the Thane RTO on Sunday morning. 'Designed primarily for agricultural operations, e-tractors require only Rs 300 to plough one acre, whereas diesel tractors cost between Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,500. This reduction in operational costs, combined with lower maintenance requirements, offers substantial daily savings for farmers,' Sarnaik said. The Late Annasaheb Patil Economic Development Corporation might provide interest-free loans for e-tractor purchases, he said. 'E-tractors offer substantial advantages with minimal maintenance costs and 60–70% lower operational expenses compared to diesel variants. The Maharashtra State Electric Vehicle Policy 2025 offers subsidies up to ₹1.5 lakh for e-tractor purchases,' an official said.

Gujarat High Court takes action against illegal ride-hailing licences for private cars
The Gujarat high court has issued a notice to state authorities concerned over a petition filed by auto rickshaw drivers' unions taking exception to the licences issued to private cars that are not registered as taxis but are used for ride-hailing by aggregators in the city. The Auto Riksha Chalak Welfare Association and Smart City Auto Drivers' Union have sought the court's directions to the transport authorities and the city's regional transport officer not to issue licences to those private vehicles that are not registered as transport vehicles but are used by aggregators like Ola , Uber , Rapido , and Jugnu. The unions have contended that Section 93 of the Motor Vehicles Act stipulates that the issuance of a licence to ply a vehicle as a taxi requires the vehicle's registration as a transport vehicle. However, authorities grant licences to aggregators to run unregistered transport vehicles as well. They have urged the HC to direct the authorities "to restrict the grant of licences for use of non-transport vehicles and further restrict the use of non-transport vehicles in the city of Ahmedabad by following the procedure laid down in the Motor Vehicles Act and Rules." The petitioners have contended that allowing such private vehicles to ply on city roads as taxis adds to pollution and traffic problems. In 2020, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued guidelines for the issuance of licences to aggregators. The state govt instructed the commissioner of transport to disallow non-transport vehicles by aggregators on April 16, 2021, and the city's RTO issued a press note to this effect on Sept 22, 2023, stating that carrying passengers in non-transport vehicles is illegal. The RTO issued a show cause notice to Rapido on Jan 4 and suspended its licence for 30 days for violation of this rule.
