This AI gadget turns your dreams into mini movies

Fast Company5 days ago
An intense dream can leave you in sweats and existential wonder. But just moments later, it evaporates from your mind to never be experienced again.
The fleeting nature of dreams is why many keep a dream journal by their bedside to jot down the story before it disappears. The design studio Modem imagined another, more modern recording device. Called the Dream Recorder, it's something like a bedside clock radio that uses AI to log your dreams and play them back to you.
When you wake up in the morning, you pick up the recorder and dictate what you remember of your dream. That ensuing transcript is sent to an AI video generator in the cloud, which creates a short video of it. What's important to Modem is the ritual, done without an app or phone, is performed with an object dedicated to you—a sort of generated visual diary of dreams.
'The thing that happens in your head isn't going to be magically recreated by this video generator,' says project contributor Mark Hinch. 'But it will hopefully capture the essence of the perhaps bizarre, weird, fragmented ideas of what happened in your head in the story.'
The dreams themselves are rendered through an intentionally ethereal aesthetic, at a low fi 240-by-240-pixel resolution that's meant to mirror the way we remember a dream, but also sidestep too much literality when things naturally don't match up. For instance, it blurs faces so that you never see someone who doesn't match up with what you remember. And rather than saving every dream you ever have forever, the Dream Recorder has been designed to flush its memory much like you do—holding onto dreams for a week at most before overwriting them with whatever you dream up next.
Instead of selling the device, Modem shares the code on Github, along with all the items you need to buy to build it, ranging from a Raspberry Pi processor to USB microphones and capacitive touch sensors, via Amazon links. The body can be printed via an online service like Shapeways, and it all connects together without soldering. (Dreams cost between about a penny and 14 cents apiece, depending on the AI service you connect to render them.)
But the Dream Recorder is admittedly less interesting as another product with features to be scrutinized than it is as a greater idea, and model of experimentation that's been lacking in the race toward AGI or building the next unicorn. With so much of the AI conversation focused on companions, productivity tools, or generative whatever, it's easy to block out the more transcendental possibilities like being able to literally speak to whales.
Modem cut through the productization of AI with a new dose of wonder. The Dream Recorder is fascinating not just for what it literally does, but as a rare, tangible beacon for a future that feels just within our grasp. (Dream recording inherently seems feasible within our electrical brain patterns and new AI capabilities—so much so that Samsung filed a patent around a UI to control your dreams.) And much like a good sci-fi novel, it offers us an anchor to discuss and debate what it all means until a world of inventors actually leads us there.
'We hope to inspire the new generation coming of age in the age of intelligence . . . showing them that there's a more mindful alternative to the very distracted world,' says Bas van de Poel, cofounder of Modem. 'Perhaps using the engines of wisdom and mindfulness, and combining them with the logic of computer science, will be sort of like the ultimate dream,' he says.

Prediction: Nvidia Stock Will Soar in the Second Half of 2025, Thanks to This Incredible News From Microsoft and Meta Platforms

Key Points Artificial intelligence (AI) is the driving force behind Nvidia's blistering growth, but investors have been wary about the future of AI. Meta Platforms and Microsoft just reported blockbuster results, which illustrate the staying power of AI. There's another catalyst that could fuel Nvidia's run in the second half of the year. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has been the poster child for the AI revolution, with the stock on a marathon that has increased its stock price by more than 1,000% since the dawn of artificial intelligence (AI) in early 2023. In recent months, however, investors have been more circumspect, plagued by a moratorium on AI chip sales to China and the potential impact of broad-based tariffs on the economic landscape. Furthermore, the ebbs and flows of AI adoption have some investors concerned that the low-hanging fruit has been picked and the AI revolution will stall. Experts generally agree that the adoption of AI, in some form or fashion, will continue well into the next decade, but investors have been seeking reassurance. Two of Nvidia's largest customers released their respective quarterly financial reports after the market close on Wednesday. Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) each reported blockbuster results, providing compelling evidence that the AI revolution is on track. The results speak for themselves Nvidia is scheduled to report the results of its fiscal 2026 second quarter (ended July 27) after the market close on Aug. 27. In the meantime, shareholders are looking for signs that the adoption of AI continues unfettered. Microsoft and Meta just provided exactly what investors were looking for. As the world's largest software company and second largest cloud infrastructure provider, Microsoft holds a unique place in the tech landscape. Furthermore, the company was quick to recognize the AI opportunity and pivoted to position itself accordingly. As a result, Microsoft has been reaping the rewards by providing a growing number of AI solutions to its vast customer base. During its fiscal 2025 fourth quarter (ended June 30), Microsoft generated revenue of $76.4 billion, rising 18% year over year. At the same time, its diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $3.65 climbed 24%. For context, analysts' consensus estimates were calling for revenue of $73.9 billion and EPS of $3.37, so Microsoft cleared both hurdles with ease. The results were fueled by Azure Cloud, as its growth rate accelerated to 39%, well ahead of the 34% expected by Wall Street. CEO Satya Nadella left no doubt about what was driving the results. "Cloud and AI is the driving force of business transformation across every industry and sector," he said. He went on to note that Azure Cloud surpassed $75 billion in revenue, fueled by strong demand for AI. Meta Platforms was also quick to recognize the opportunity afforded by AI, tapping into its wellspring of data to create its homegrown Llama AI models. The company has been spending heavily to capitalize on the AI windfall. In the second quarter, Meta delivered revenue of $47.5 billion, up 22% year over year, resulting in EPS of $7.14, a 38% increase. The consensus on Wall Street was revenue of $44.83 billion and EPS of $5.89, so Meta sailed past expectations with plenty of room to spare. In prepared remarks, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, "The strong performance this quarter is largely thanks to AI unlocking greater efficiency and gains across our ads system," noting these systems drove "roughly 5% more ad conversions on Instagram and 3% on Facebook." It also wasn't surprising that AI is helping its social media platforms stay relevant. "AI is significantly improving our ability to show people content that they're going to find interesting and useful," Zuckerberg said. Nvidia's future looks bright It has been abundantly clear that Nvidia's meteoric rise is the direct result of the accelerating adoption of AI. Once known primarily for its gaming expertise, Nvidia's graphics processing units are now the gold standard for processing AI -- which is evident in its recent results. In Nvidia's fiscal 2026 first quarter, revenue of $44 billion surged 69% year over year, but that only tells part of the story. The company's data center segment, which includes AI chips, soared 69% to a record $39 billion, now accounting for 89% of Nvidia's considerable revenue. That helps explain why investors are so keen to understand whether AI has room to run. The future looks bright, as Nvidia is guiding for second-quarter revenue of $45 billion, or year-over-year growth of 50%. One of the biggest factors weighing on Nvidia in recent months is the Trump Administration's moratorium on H20 AI chip sales to China. CEO Jensen Huang recently announced that the company had filed an application that would permit Nvidia to resume selling those chips in China, and was assured that those licenses would be granted. The company took a $4.5 billion charge related to its H20 chips in the first quarter, but analysts estimate Nvidia could now generate additional sales of $15 billion in the back half of 2025. Furthermore, while Nvidia keeps its customer list under lock and key, analysts with Bloomberg and Barclays Research have read the tea leaves and concluded that Nvidia's four biggest customers -- responsible for nearly 53% of its revenue -- are: Microsoft: 15% Meta Platforms: 14% Alphabet: 12% Amazon: 11% The robust results generated by Microsoft and Meta Platforms offer clear and compelling evidence that the adoption of AI continues unfettered, and as two of Nvidia's biggest customers, that bodes well for the company's ongoing success. Finally, at just 31 times next year's expected earnings, Nvidia stock is reasonably priced. That's why I predict Nvidia stock will probably soar for the rest of 2025. Prediction: 2 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stocks Will Be Worth More Than Apple by 2030 (Hint: Not Nvidia)

Key Points Apple currently has a market value of $3.1 trillion, but Meta Platforms and Broadcom could surpass that figure within five years. Meta Platforms is using AI to improve engagement across its social media platforms, and the company is the undisputed leader the nascent smart glasses market. Broadcom is a leader in AI networking chips and custom AI accelerators, and its clientele includes Apple, Google, Meta Platforms, and OpenAI. 10 stocks we like better than Meta Platforms › Apple is currently the third largest public company, with a market value of $3.1 trillion. I expect two artificial intelligence stocks to surpass that figure within five years. I am not talking about Nvidia, which is already worth $4.3 trillion, but rather Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) and Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO). Here's what my prediction would mean for shareholders: Meta Platforms is currently worth $1.7 trillion. The stock must gain 88% for the company to achieve a market value of $3.2 trillion, which implies annual returns of 13.5% over the next five years. Broadcom is currently worth $1.4 trillion. The stock must advance 129% for the company to achieve a market value of $3.2 trillion, which implies annual returns of 18% over the next five years. Here's why I have confidence in my predictions. 1. Meta Platforms Meta Platforms owns three of the four most popular social media platforms in Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp as measured by monthly active users. That ability to engage people and collect data makes the company a valuable advertising partner, so much so that Meta is the second largest ad tech company in the world behind Alphabet's Google. Meta is successfully using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve consumer engagement with better content recommendations across its social media properties. CEO Mark Zuckerberg told analysts on the first-quarter earnings call time spent on Facebook increased 7% and time spent on Instagram increased 6% in the past six months. Meta is also using artificial intelligence to help marketers optimize campaign performance. The number of advertisers using AI creative tools rose 30% in the first quarter, and better ad targeting for Reels increased conversion rates by 5%. Also, Meta recently introduced new AI features that let marketers turn images into videos, embed conversational agents into ads, and translate campaigns into multiple languages. Importantly, Meta has opportunities beyond artificial intelligence. The company dominates the nascent smart glasses market, which tripled in size last year and is forecast to increase faster than 60% annually through 2029, according to Counterpoint Research. Zuckerberg has frequently asserted smart glasses with built-in holographic displays will eventually replace smartphones. Here's why Meta could surpass Apple's current market value by 2030: Wall Street estimates the company's earnings will grow at 15% annually in the next three to five years. That makes the current valuation of 27 times earnings look reasonable. And if Meta's earnings do grow at 15% annually through 2030, its market value could increase 88% to $3.2 trillion while its valuation multiple drops to 25.5 times earnings. That seems entirely plausible. 2. Broadcom Broadcom develops infrastructure software and semiconductor solutions. The company is the market leader in Wi-Fi chipsets, which let devices like smartphones connect to wireless networks. It also dominates the market for Ethernet switch chips, which move information between data center servers and storage. Demand for high-speed networking chips will increase as artificial intelligence workloads become more common. Additionally, Broadcom is the leading supplier of custom AI accelerators, commonly called application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). The company currently develops AI ASICs for seven hyperscale clients, including Apple, ByteDance, Google, Meta Platforms, and OpenAI. Broadcom also has two other unnamed customers. Morgan Stanley analysts estimate the market for AI ASICs will increase at 34% annually through 2030. Here's why Broadcom could top Apple's current market value by 2030. Wall Street expects adjusted earnings to grow at 20% annually through 2028. That makes the current valuation of 52 times adjusted earnings look tolerable. But if Broadcom's earnings increase at 20% annually through 2030, its market value could jump 129% to $3.2 trillion while its valuation drops to a more reasonable 47 times earnings. Admittedly, it will be more difficult for Broadcom (compared to Meta Platforms) to surpass Apple's current market value within five years. But I still think it's a distinct possibility. Not only because the company beat the consensus earnings estimate by 4% during the past six quarters -- which suggests Wall Street analysts may be underestimating future earnings growth -- but also because management says AI chip revenue could more than quadruple by 2027. Should you buy stock in Meta Platforms right now? MSFT META- Spending Like Mad, But Blowing Away Estimates

(MSFT) shares just soared, hitting a new all-time high and topping the $4 trillion market cap mark, after the company posted a beat-and-raise quarter. Meanwhile, Meta Platforms Inc. (META) also hit new all-time highs after it posted a double-beat and raised its forecast, notes Tom Bruni, editor-in-chief of The Daily Rip by Stocktwits. (Editor's Note: Tom will be speaking at the 2025 MoneyShow Toronto, scheduled for Sept. 12-13. Click HERE to register for a FREE pass.) It continues to face data center infrastructure shortages, and it's throwing money at the problem until the supply-demand balance improves. Its Intelligent Cloud unit revenue rose 26% year-over-year, and management revealed the size of its Azure business in dollars for the first time ever. It's over $75 billion (and rose 34% YOY).
