4 Indian cardinals eligible to vote for new pope
Four of the six cardinals of the Catholic church in India are eligible to vote in the conclave.
They are: Filipe Neri Ferrao, the Archbishop of Goa and Damman; Baselios Cleemis, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church in Kerala; George Koovakkad, former head of the Journeys Office of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, and Anthony Poola, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Hyderabad and the first archbishop from the Dalit Christian community.
The two other Indian cardinals, Oswald Gracias, the former Archbishop of Bombay and Cardinal George Alencherry, Major Archbishop Emeritus of the Syro-Malabar Church, cannot vote in the papal conclave as they have crossed the age limit of 80 years.
Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, in 1936, the first pontiff from Latin America, died on Monday morning in Vatican City at the age of 88 following a bout of chronic lung disease that left him hospitalised for 38 days and extremely physically weak.
Yet, on Easter Sunday, the Pope braving his illness, made a public appearance from the same gallery where he was introduced in March 2013 as the leader of the Catholic Church , which has around 1.3 billion followers worldwide.
Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, one of the eligible electors, said Francis would be remembered as a Pope of the people.
'My assessment was always that he would die with the people. And that's exactly what happened. Yesterday, on Easter, he met thousands of people at St Peter's Square.
'And this morning, he has gone home, ' the cardinal told reporters on Monday.
Cardinal Ferrao said the deceased Pope had a special love for India and 'longed' to visit the country. He recalled that the Pope canonised five saints from India during his tenure.
They are: St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara and St. Euphrasia Eluvathingal on 23rd November 2014; St. Joseph Vaz on 14th January 2015; St. Mariam Thresia Chiramel on 13th October 2019 and St. Devasahayam Pillai on 15th May 2022.
Cardinal Alencherry, who had participated in the 2013 conclave to elect Pope Francis, told reporters on Monday evening that he would be leaving for the Vatican shortly to take part in the funeral.
'Pope Francis was one who used not only his brain but also his heart to communicate with the people. He used the papal position as a mode of service for the cause of the poor, marginalised, orphans and refugees.

SBSP chief explores options for non-BJP front in Bihar polls
Lucknow: BJP ally Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party has again started flexing its political muscles by indicating that it may form a third front with non-BJP parties to contest the Bihar elections. "We are keeping all options open in case our alliance with the BJP in Bihar does not happen," SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar told TOI on Saturday. Rajbhar, a minister in the Yogi cabinet, said his party is in talks with multiple smaller parties, including Prashant Kishore's Jan Suraaj Party and Mukesh Sahni's Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP). Rajbhar said his party plans to contest at least 156 out of 243 assembly seats in Bihar. "It all depends on what and how the situation arises. We want to make our presence felt in Bihar where we have been active for the past many years," he said. Sources said Rajbhar has been bargaining hard with the BJP for a "respectable" number of seats in certain pockets of Siwan, Champaran, Saran, Gopalganj, and Buxar, which have a sizable presence of Rajbhar, Rajvanshi, Rajdhobi, and Bhar communities. The party also aims to consolidate castes like Patwa and Mandal. Extremely Backward Castes (EBCs) form a significant voting bloc in Bihar. According to an estimate, it is over 30% of the total electorate. Sources said Rajbhar has held meetings with the BJP brass, including home minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda, in his bid to get some poll space in Bihar. Rajbhar exploring the option of a third front is a significant development. Experts said SBSP's chief action may be seen through the lens of coalition politics, electoral bargaining, and regional caste dynamics. They added that Rajbhar's political influence is rooted in OBC and Dalit mobilisation, primarily in eastern UP. His expansion in Bihar is seen as an attempt to replicate the model across the border. Sources said SBSP aims to consolidate non-dominant OBC groups, especially those feeling underrepresented by bigger players like RJD or JD(U). Rajbhar's plan to explore a new equation had its bit of strategic elements. Jan Suraaj Party offered a platform-driven movement with "clean governance" as its plank. Likewise, Sahni's VIP was another political group eyeing the non-Yadav OBC and Dalit vote bank. Experts said that the third front, if it materialises, might split the floating OBC/Dalit voters. This would not only help the BJP indirectly, but also hurt Lalu Prasad's RJD, which is eyeing a return to power. Mathura Sridharan trolled for 'bindi', Ohio AG says, 'If her name or complexion bother you...'
Mathura Sridharan was trolled for her Indian-origin after her name was announced as Ohio's Solicitor General. Indian-origin Mathura Sridharan was appointed as Ohio's 12th solicitor general, inviting the wrath of online trolls who questioned why a 'non-US-origin' person was not picked for the post. Sridharan's LinkedIn went viral as critics questioned her credibility -- forcing Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost to issue a clarification, or a clapback at the trolls. Dave Yost, who announced Mathura's promotion, said Mathura is wrongly being portrayed as a non-American. "A few commenters have asserted incorrectly that Mathura is not American. She is a United States citizen, married to a US citizen, and the child of naturalized US citizens," he said. "If her name or her complexion bother you, the problem is not with her or her appointment," he added. — DaveYostOH (@DaveYostOH) "Mathura is brilliant… she won her argument at SCOTUS last year. Both the SGs she worked under (Flowers & Gaiser) recommended her. I told her when I originally hired her I needed her to argue with me. She does… All the time! Excited to promote her. She will serve Ohio well," Yost wrote. Yost's clapback also met trolling as people commented that she is not "American-American". "Is she a Christian? That's the biggest factor that concerns me. Based on the bindi on her forehead, I worry she is not," one wrote. "Another American job… given away to foreigners," another wrote. "She's Indian. They all have a loyalty first to other Indians. horrible pick. Totally un-American. the GOP is pathetic," a third user wrote. "No one with the last name 'Sridharan' fought in the US Civil War. She's not an American," another wrote. Before joining the Ohio Solicitor's Office, Mathura clerked for Judge Steven J. Menashi of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and Judge Deborah A. Batts of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. She holds a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law, a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Bail for nuns a relief, but fight for justice will continue, says Raphael Thattil
Raphael Thattil, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, has expressed relief at the granting of bail to the two nuns who were arrested by the Chhattisgarh police on charges of human trafficking and forced conversion. 'While their release has brought solace, the very fact of their incarceration underlines a disturbing breach of India's secular and democratic principles,' he said in a communication. He said that the bail has lifted a heavy burden, though 'it does not mark the end of our quest for justice'. 'We remain committed to seeing this matter through to its just conclusion,' he said. He said that the Church will not rest until justice is served in full. 'The immediate next step must be the quashing of the charge sheet, which is both malicious and factually baseless. Legal proceedings should also be initiated against those responsible for violating the constitutional rights of these innocent citizens,' he said. The Major Archbishop further stressed that this incident highlights the pressing need to uphold religious freedom and protect minority rights, as guaranteed by the Indian Constitution.
