How a handy Wicklow couple saved money with their extension: ‘We both work from home and needed more space'
Both options are expensive in today's market.
But, by growing up on a farm and learning a trade, talented cabinet maker Conor Kelly, founder of Snug furniture, was able to do a lot of the expensive work himself when he did a self-build extension to his Co

Childhood sweethearts, they met when both were in bands as teenagers. She was a singer and guitarist. He was just the drummer, he says.
After college, he went to Kenya to volunteer, teaching locals to make furniture with the materials that were available to them. It's an ethos that he brought to Snug, the furniture-making company he set up in his native Co Wicklow, in 2014.
People want to know where their timber is coming from, he says. 'I try to use materials close to me, from local family farmland or the surplus of trees from the Glen of Imaal woods.'

Schooled in a myriad of skills, all of these proved useful when building their home.
'You have to teach yourself most things in agriculture and construction within reason,' he says. He also had friends and family in trades that he could call on.
Nell is involved in another industry that is a big employer in the county – film. She's a film distributor and runs a company called Breakout Pictures, whose productions include An Cailín Ciúin, That They Might Face the Rising Sun and the recently released Blue Road:The Edna O'Brien Story.

In 2017, the couple welcomed their daughter Peetie, so named after her maternal grandmother, Patricia, the pet name her family had for her.
'We both work from home, and we needed more space.'
So they decided to extend. The original house was already a good size. The two-bedroom property with mezzanine measured about 148sq m (1,600sq feet) and included a large open-plan living kitchen.
Kelly's workshop, where he makes all his furniture, is also on their site, and he put it to exceedingly good use when it came to extending the house.
The plan was to take a self-build approach to create a home that could double as a showroom for his furniture, to showcase his skills, and allow customers to come on site and see and sit on the various pieces, all in a residential setting.

Having lived on site in the original house for several years, the couple already knew what vistas they wanted to frame and where the light fell. They worked with Dalkey-based Alyn Chambers Architects to sketch up suitable ideas. 'We wanted open plan spaces, big windows taking in the views, polished concrete floors and tactile pieces of furniture,' he says.
And the sense of space they have now is as vast as the surrounding countryside. The home is H-shaped with a long entrance hall that doubles as a gallery for his furniture, connecting the old house to the newly constructed part.
To the right is the original property, the layout for which has been reimagined. It now has four bedrooms, two upstairs, and the open plan space on the ground floor has been converted into two more bedrooms and a TV room. This is the wing where eight-year-old daughter Peetie sleeps.

Across the hall is the new extension. Set on an east-west axis, it features an open-plan living space that is zoned around a floating staircase. The kitchen is in the east end and gets morning light, the dining table faces south, and the lounge is at the west end where you can watch the sun go down. From each area there is access outdoors to a covered exterior, designed with the weather in mind and the need for shelter, as well as those pastoral views.

Kelly did a lot of the work and the hard labour himself. He made the stairs and their surrounds, the kitchen cabinets, which feature solid ash doors with a band saw effect, with some units painted in the same dark look as the exterior, to reflect outside, he explains. He also fabricated the larder and the utility rooms. In addition, he made all the furniture. 'I wanted to do it myself, to leave my handprint on everything.'
After getting quotes ranging from €10,000 to €25,000 to do the polished concrete floors, 'wild money', as he puts it, he also did them. He hired the equipment for a week and a half, for about €1,500, and tested it out on a corner of the ground floor first, in a spot where he could make a mistake, he says.
'You have to have the knowledge, some class of an idea of how to work with stone,' he cautions. He didn't want a uniform finish that looked 'like a giant tile'. Instead, his floor features contrast – in some spots the coarser aggregate has risen to the top – in others it's a finer look that is visible. There are also some settling cracks, he admits.

Upstairs, there is what Kelly describes as an inverted dormer within the corrugated steel roof, which is an anthracite shade, RAL 7016, one of the three standard farm supply colours available and so less expensive than using a custom colour. It has a plastic-coated finish to protect it from the elements.
He also made the 350sq m of exterior Siberian larch cladding, bevelling the edges to keep the rain off, again in his workshop on site. The timber has been attached to the concrete structure and appears to float. This allows air to circulate the battens, minimising rot and mould.

Upstairs, there is a Swiss chalet-style triangular west-facing balcony off the principal bedroom. In the opposite gable end, another window allows them to welcome the day's morning light, too.
With the property now extending to 325sq m (3,500sq ft), this is a home where space is an everyday luxury.
'All of the furniture in the house is there for people to view,' he says. 'It is in usable spaces so customers can see how it stands up to wear and tear in a real-life setting.' The pale wood furniture is in deliberate contrast to the dark wood exterior.

This is a business where you get to meet and see who you're giving your money to. 'You can see where everything is made and talk through what it is you're looking for,' Kelly explains.
Repeat business accounts for half of his revenue.
'One client bought a diningroom table about a decade ago. They wanted another, bigger, wider version that also had leaves to extend it for large gatherings, such as Christmas. After they ordered it, they told us about their holiday home in Kerry that also needed a table.'
How does it feel to have been so hands-on with his home?
'It feels amazing and is a great source of pride to have done almost everything in it and on my family's land. I don't ever get tired of living in it,' he says.
He says it's good for business too. 'This lad built his own house and everything in it. It gives clients confidence that I'm going to make something beautiful for them,' he explains.

'It's our ethos. We make things from wood that is local and burn a Snug stamp in each and every piece of furniture.'
Doing the sums
The extension work should have cost about €210,000 to get the place to a builder's finish. He says he spent €170,000; €110,000 for materials such as concrete, roofing, timber cladding, and includes architect fees; €40,000 for plumbing, electrical, and block-laying; and €20,000 for bathroom fixtures and finishes. By doing the labour himself, including the concrete floors, he saved €40,000.
But a builder's finish means that the entire interior still had to be done. He estimates that the gross cost for it, that is materials only, to do the kitchen cabinetry, stairs and its surround, band saw timber walls, utility room and units, larder and units, dining table, sideboards, consoles, and record cabinet, cost him €30,000 in materials, excluding his labour and time. For mere mortals to commission a joiner to do the same, he estimates the cost would be about €90,000.
Homeowners without such skills may pay a premium for everything. In today's market, Alyn Chambers Architects says it is very difficult to predict costs and counsels anyone looking to renovate or extend to engage the services of a qualified quantity surveyor who has expertise in that particular type of build.

Golfer Leona Maguire: ‘I wanted to beat my twin Lisa. She wanted to beat me'
Bags of clubs are lined up like sentries outside Carton House in Co Kildare where golfers from all over the world are preparing for the KPMG Irish Women's Open. I'm here to talk to Leona Maguire, a trailblazing pioneer of Irish women's golf. Inside the clubhouse, some of the golfers, athletic-looking types in pristine sportswear, are helping themselves from a protein-forward buffet. One woman walks past carrying an abstemious looking plate loaded with three boiled eggs and a lump of brown soda bread. Maguire, it turns out, is also fond of an egg. I find this out during the quick-fire round of our interview. I've only been given half an hour with the Irish golfing legend so I figure I better get as many questions in as possible and hope a few rapid inquiries towards the end of our chat will prove an efficient use of the time. When I ask about her favourite post-round snack or meal she says she loves breakfast. 'I'd have breakfast for any meal.' The Cavan woman is picky about her eggs, though. 'We grew up with chickens and hens at home, so I'm very particular about my eggs. They have to be real eggs; they can't be any of the powdered stuff sometimes you get in some hotels. They have to have yolks with almost an orangey tint to them.' I tell her about the woman I saw earlier with the boiled eggs. 'Yeah,' she says, confirming the eating habits of her fellow golfers, 'there's a lot of ham and cheese and boiled eggs.' The hens and chickens she grew up around were in Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, where she and her twin sister Lisa were golfing child prodigies with two schoolteacher parents. Does she remember her first experiences with golf? 'Dad got us three clubs and we started off at the par-three course down at the Slieve Russell' (the golf and country club formerly owned by businessman Sean Quinn). READ MORE They soon went further afield, 'playing with the boys, four-hole competitions. It was a Mars bar for the winner kind of thing.' Were they beating the boys? 'Probably not in the beginning … eventually we graduated to nine holes and 14 holes and then we were playing with the boys more regularly … they quite enjoyed having the help and there was slagging if they lost, but they were always very good about it.' She remembers there was the attitude of 'ah, girls playing golf – when they get to be teenagers, they'll give it up. But Dad saw past that. He saw there were opportunities out there for women in sport.' It helped to have a twin also in the game. 'There were two of us. That was a nice thing. We always had each other.' They were only 11 when they were asked to carry the Ryder Cup trophy into the K Club for the presentation ceremony in 2006, the year Europe beat the US in a decisive victory. Photograph: Ross Kinnaird/Getty I met her twin Lisa earlier, while Leona was getting photos taken. Lisa turned professional in 2018, the same year as her sister, but retired a year later. She's now a newly graduated dentist, starting a job in Cork later this year. Were they competitive growing up? 'Oh, definitely,' she tells me. They're still close. Lisa spent the past few weeks with her sister in Detroit, while Leona played the Dow Championships as part of a duo called the Irish Goodbyes . 'We were very close, but also I wanted to beat her as well,' Leona smiles when asked about rivalry with her twin. 'We were competitive from a young age. It didn't matter what it was. My mam always said we'd fight over snakes and ladders. I wanted to beat Lisa. She wanted to beat me, but if I didn't win, I wanted to see her win as well. So we'd fall out and fall in just as quickly. It never lasted very long, but I think that brought us both on without realising it.' Was she disappointed when Lisa made the decision to retire? 'I mean, it'd be nice to have her out on tour but at the same time it's nice to see her happy and doing well and excelling in something that she's good at. I think she deserves a lot of credit for choosing her own path.' Long before turning professional Maguire, who is now 30, made her mark on golf. She was ranked best in the world for a record 135 weeks as an amateur, winning the Mark H McCormack Medal three times for being the top-ranked woman amateur globally. On a scholarship at Duke University in the US, where she studied psychology and marketing management, she won several college titles and awards for outstanding play. The wins kept coming when she turned professional in 2018. The following year she won two tournaments on the Symetra Tour. In 2022, she became the first Irish woman to win on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golfing Association) tour landing the historic victory in the Drive On Championship. If you go on the LGPA website and search for her name, you learn that since turning professional seven years ago she's racked up just over $5 million (around €4.2 million) in prize money. What does she spend it on? 'We came from a modest background. I don't need a lot of money to keep me happy. I'm not big into material things. I don't have a big handbag or watch collection.' She tells me she's building a home in Cavan which will make a fair dent in her savings and, as a keen cook and baker, she likes going to fancy restaurants when she travels. There is a lot of travel. She's been competing in China and Singapore in the past year – the golf season is long, beginning in January and not ending until November. One of my brothers has a more existential question: 'Will you ask her why I play so well some weeks and so badly other times?' Maguire laughs, feeling my brother's pain. 'Time, it's just time,' she says. 'We always joke with people in the pro ams that if they are very good at golf they are probably not spending enough time in the office. It's one of those annoyingly frustrating sports … even for us at our level there are things you'll be great at one day and not so good the next. But you always hit one shot that keeps you coming back the next day'. In this, the psychology degree comes in handy, especially when experiencing a dip in form: 'Golf is one of those sports where you lose more times than you win. So you have to take the lows with the highs and you have to be resilient and mentally strong.' Leona Maguire: 'When we were growing up women weren't allowed in some clubhouses.' Maguire has seen women's golf evolve over the past 20 years. How could it be better promoted? 'I think it would be nice to see it on TV more often and in better time slots,' she says. 'It used to be just a highlights package at midnight on a Thursday or something like that. It's starting to get more and more prime-time slots. 'The big thing is getting as many people out to Carton House this week. When people come and watch, they're very impressed with the standard and even a lot of men would say when they come out to watch us it's more relatable, and they pick up more things about the rhythm and the timing and the accuracy of it. They're quite impressed. So I think the biggest thing is getting more eyes on it, and then once the eyes are there, we can retain the fans.' We have a few minutes left for the quick-fire round. Coffee or Tea? 'Tea,' she says quick as a flash. 'I don't drink coffee.' Morning round or afternoon tee-off? 'Morning.' Who would win in a putting contest between her and her twin sister Lisa? 'Well, probably me now but back in the day, I don't know,' she says smiling diplomatically. Any golfing superstitions? She tells me about a lucky ball marker she's carried around in a pouch for 15 years, it has a shamrock on one side and the Slieve Russell on the other. Golfers typically have long careers, Maguire could have another 30 or 40 years in the sport. 'I don't know about that but I don't see myself stopping any time soon,' she says. 'I enjoy what I do. I always say I've one of the best offices in the world. It changes every week. I'm very lucky to have the job I do. It's brought me to some incredible places.'

Louise Bruton: Penneys' adaptive lingerie is half the price of Kim Kardashian's Skims. That's a game-changer
My wardrobe malfunctions may not be as dramatic as some onstage performers, but they can still cause a scene. Having a boogie at a gig in Dublin recently, my movements were cut short. The belt of my linen overcoat, which I had tied behind my back, had unravelled and wound around the spokes of my wheelchair, grounding me to a halt. It took two security guards to set me free. Pairing billowing material with a wheelchair is a rookie mistake. Lots of bad things can happen, from getting lassoed like a calf to mucking up the material as it drapes over the tyres. And if it rains there will be soggy arms for days. I wore the coat knowing those risks, but I also wore it because it looked good. When I get dressed, I usually have a particular persona in mind – kooky art teacher at parties, Paul Mescal in GAA shorts on balmy days, B-list pop star for weddings – but the execution won't always complement my wheelchair. No matter what their personal taste or style is, disabled people usually have to pick an outfit based around function and comfort. This was something I found myself thinking about at the launch earlier this month of Penneys ' latest adaptable clothing line. Included in the range are wardrobe staples such as blue denim jeans (€22), a beige trench coat (€35), white shirts (€20), drawstring tracksuit bottoms (€18), pyjama tops and bottoms (€18 each). There are accessible features like snap fastenings on T-shirts and bras, waist loops to pull up trousers, and hidden openings for stoma or catheter lines on shirts – all potentially helpful adjustments for various disabilities. Penneys' adaptive lingerie (€10/€12) is also half the price of Kim Kardashian 's Skims offerings. It will be a game-changer for some. READ MORE And yet, unfortunately for me, I would never choose to wear the range. The conservative styles don't fit in with my somewhat eclectic taste palette, and I don't see how these adaptable features will make it any easier for me to get dressed or to move around compared with what I wear already.I left the launch trying to understand what adaptive fashion really means, generally and personally. The best way I've seen it in action is when brides take their wedding dresses from civil ceremony to unruly dance floor by bustling the excess material of their skirts up and away from stomping feet. Like dancing brides, adaptive clothing should mean changing your clothes based on your surroundings or your needs. A dress in Primark's new adaptive fashion range Disability is a wide-ranging term used to cover thousands of conditions and illnesses, and within those, each person's experience differs wildly. If only a portion of a clothing line is adaptive, it will serve only a small percentage of disabled people. Browsing the hundreds of items on online retailer Zalando 's adaptive edit, personal style has room to thrive for adults and children. Broken down into categories like fit for prostheses, sensory friendly, easy closure, easy to dress and seated style, these are more than just staple items. While Nike and Skechers have clothes that coincidentally have adaptive qualities in this edit, lesser known names like Anna Field, Pier One and Even&Odd have items designed with disabled people in mind and use disabled models to display them. Alas, these clothes don't sing to me either. Primark's adaptive fashion range will be a game-changer for some When many shops in real life still don't have larger changing rooms, it's easy to throw everything into an online basket, but clothes I've bought from other adaptive lines have been unsuccessful. A raincoat in the seated style used so much material that it pooled over my wheels, catching water and mud and all of the things it was meant to resist at an Irish festival during a yellow weather warning. Loops to pull on shoes have pulled all the way off, and snap fasteners on jackets have not stayed fastened. I am still learning what I need from my clothes, but I also want to shop in a sustainable way instead of this trial and error approach. Adjustable sleeves and elasticated or drawstring trousers are essential for me as I'm in the seated position all day, but I also need breathable materials like cotton, linen or wool to protect my skin and to regulate my body heat. A brand that nails those criteria is Yoke, a London-based studio that uses deadstock fabrics to make relaxed clothing out of natural fibres. Their loose fitting gingham trousers with an elasticated waist means I don't get that sharp pinch from zips or buttons. A cut-off zip-sleeve jacket from Primark's adaptive fashion range Closer to home is Miss She's Got Knits by Dubliner Karen Birney who handknits colourful cardigans, jumpers and vests using Merino or alpaca wool in chunky or cutesy stitches. When her cropped Supersoft MSGK vest came online in her summer drop, I clicked 'buy' immediately. With a vest, sleeves getting frayed by my wheels is a non-issue and the cropped fit prevents material from bulking in my lap. But the best thing about this vest is that people always compliment me when I wear it. Primark launched its new adaptive fashion range earlier this month The above pieces are investments, but because I've become better at searching for what I need online, Vinted fills in the gap for affordable preloved clothing. Most weeks my postman brings a bundle of vintage and designer clothes that tend to my needs with no compromise on the environment, my style, or my bank account. Well, maybe some financial compromise. Adaptive clothing shouldn't be niche, but with Penneys on board everyday fashion is becoming more accessible for disabled people. I would argue, however, that if brands really wanted to implement an adaptive approach, then a free alteration service for customers would cater to all bodies and backgrounds while also looking out for the planet. A gal can dream.
