Indian Air Force aerobatic team withdraws from LIMA'25

The Sun19-05-2025
LANGKAWI: The Indian Air Force aerobatic team, Surya Kiran, has withdrawn from participating in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA'25).
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said India had initially confirmed its intention to send the team to the biennial exhibition but had to cancel due to issues currently affecting the country.
'They had expressed readiness to take part. However, they cannot proceed due to the situation back home,' he told a press conference after inspecting preparations for LIMA'25 here today.
Despite the withdrawal, he said the exhibition would still showcase aerobatic displays by several renowned international teams, including the Russian Knights from Russia and Jupiter from Indonesia.
'For local teams, we have solo performances by the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Layang-Layang Flying Academy and Aerotree Defence and Services,' he said.
Mohamed Khaled said a total of 57 aircraft would be featured in the 17th edition of the exhibition, including 43 static air assets from local and foreign participants, an increase from 34 in 2023.
'Of the total, 26 are local air assets while 17 are from abroad, including countries such as Brunei, Germany, Italy, Canada, Singapore, Russia and the United States. Commercial aircraft from India, Brazil, France and Italy will also be on display,' he said.
On the maritime segment, he said 31 ships from domestic and foreign fleets would take part in the static display and fleet review.
'This is an increase from just 19 ships at LIMA 2023. Of the 31, 19 are from Malaysia while 12 are from countries such as Singapore, Indonesia and the United States.
'For the maritime demonstration, a total of 39 assets will be involved compared to 28 during the previous edition,' he added.
Mohamed Khaled also said that representatives from 46 countries, including ASEAN member states and Malaysia's friendly nations, have been invited to attend the exhibition, comprising a total of 140 delegates.
'These delegates include ministers, deputy ministers, secretaries-general and heads of military services,' he said.
Meanwhile, he said the Defence Ministry would investigate claims that an air show rehearsal caused damage to house windows in a nearby village, as seen in a viral 56-second video.
'We're aware of the matter and will not ignore it. Air displays can sometimes have minor effects,' he said.
LIMA'25, co-organised by the Defence Ministry and Global Exhibitions and Conferences Sdn Bhd, carries the theme 'Innovate Today, Thrive Tomorrow', highlighting innovation and competitiveness in the maritime and aerospace sectors.
The exhibition, taking place in Langkawi, Kedah from May 20 to 24, is the largest maritime and aerospace showcase in Southeast Asia since its inception in 1991.

Sun bear spotted in Kemaman village stirs fear

Compiled by MARTIN CARVALHO, and SOME 500 villagers in Felda Seberang Tayor in Kemaman, Terengganu, have become a little fearful after having spotted a sun bear loitering around their village, Kosmo! reported. The bear is said to have been feasting on fruits from the villagers' orchards, showing a particular fondness for durians. Resident Johari Ariff, 49, claimed he stumbled upon the bear climbing a durian tree last week. 'I steeled myself to chase the animal down from the tree. But I was shocked that it had such long claws and sharp teeth,' he told the Malay daily. 'Thankfully, I managed to run off to save myself.' Another villager, Nazli Derani, 47, said the bear had also encroached into jackfruit and coconut orchards and is believed to have become active during the fruiting season. Aside from suffering losses, he also said villagers are now afraid to venture out at night. 'Our children aren't allowed to play outside unless accompanied by an adult,' Nazli added. Terengganu state Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director Loo Kean Seong said that the department has set up traps and will monitor the situation until the bear is caught. > Singer and actress Abby Abadi can't recall why she left the popular '90s girl group Elite, but she's looking forward to performing with them again in their first concert in over 25 years, Harian Metro reported. 'I wasn't annoyed with anyone. I'm not sure what led me to leave Elite, but it was a decision I made wholeheartedly,' the 48-year-old said. 'It also wasn't because I wanted to pursue acting either. In fact, I can't even recall exactly when I left Elite.' Abby, whose real name is Arbaiyah Abdul Manan, said she only remembers starting her acting career in 2000 when she landed a role in the police action drama Gerak Khas. Elite, formed in 1996 under the KRU music label, saw Abby involved in two albums – Catwalk and Tamparan – before her departure. She was later replaced by Fiza. Abby also said she didn't keep up with Elite's progress after stepping away, as she felt it was no longer relevant to her. The group is scheduled to perform their first reunion concert Elite Live '25 at the Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on Sept 20. Besides Abby and Azza, the concert will feature Shasha Saidin, Watie Sadali and Linda Rafar. 90s Girl Group Elite To Hold First Solo Concert This September; Ticketing & Seating Plan Announced

Comprised of members Azza, Abby, Sasha, Linda and Watie, the group made their debut in 1995 with the duet 'Diari Metropolitan' alongside KRU, which was later featured on the latter's album 'Ooh! La! La!', released the following year. It's been a while since they last performed for fans, but now Elite are making a comeback, bigger and better than ever. Earlier this week, the group announced that they will be holding their first-ever solo concert this September. 'WE ARE BACK!', the group said in the announcement post on Monday (23rd June). 3 decades after their debut, Elite are set to mark a major milestone in their career with their first-ever solo concert, held in celebration of their 30th anniversary.
