Karan Johar regrets remaking Mani Ratnam's film with Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor: 'I've gone wrong'
Karan Johar reveals his first instinct was not to remake Mani Ratnam's O Kadhal Kanmani
In a recent podcast with Jay Shetty, Karan Johar revealed his initial instinct not to remake Mani Ratnam's much-loved movie O Kadhal Kanmani in Hindi.
He said, 'I remember there was a film. It was an adaptation of the Mani Ratnam film. It is called OK Jaanu. Aditya (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Shraddha (Shraddha Kapoor) just had a blockbuster called Aashiqui 2. They had already agreed to do the film. And that film came to me as a project ready with a great remake. Shaad (Shaad Ali) was a wonderful director, and yet in my heart, I had actually felt that, Should this film be remade? Because it's so much at the moment. Can that moment be recaptured?'
The Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani director went on to add, 'Somewhere, the magic of the original we couldn't recapture. And it was nobody's fault. But my instinct told me I shouldn't do it. And I did it. And that's when I realised that I should listen to my instinct. I have gone wrong.'
Karan Johar owns up to his failures
While emphasizing the importance of listening to one's instincts, Karan Johar acknowledged his failures alongside his successes throughout his long career. He further said, 'Every failure of mine is as special to me as success. It's just the way I look at it.'
For the unversed, OK Jaanu, starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, was co-produced by Karan Johar under his banner, Dharma Productions. The 2017 musical romantic drama received negative reviews, which led to its box office failure.

Kerala Rolls Out Draft Film Policy Aimed At Funding, Gender Equality And Global Reach
Last Updated: Kerala's draft film policy aims to formalise the industry, enhance global presence, and promote inclusivity. It includes financial mechanisms, gender equity, and tech adoption. In a significant step towards transforming its film sector, the Kerala government has released a comprehensive draft film policy aimed at formalising the industry, enhancing its global footprint, and promoting inclusivity. The policy was unveiled on Saturday during the ongoing two-day Malayalam Film Conclave in Thiruvananthapuram. Framed with a futuristic vision, the policy outlines strategic goals including industry recognition for film production and exhibition, improved financial mechanisms, gender equity, and the adoption of advanced technology. It also aspires to make Kerala a regional production hub while preserving the cultural legacy of Malayalam cinema. Declaring that film production will now be recognised as a formal industry, the draft underlines the benefits of transparency, financial clarity, and social accountability. 'The recognition of film production as an industry will bring multiple advantages, enhancing transparency and promoting social responsibility within the sector," the policy notes. One of the cornerstones of the policy is an inclusive financing framework. It proposes a general incentive scheme for Malayalam cinema, with targeted support for women and marginalised communities. Plans are also in place to establish a venture capital fund for film production, with the involvement of private players and provisions for crowdfunding, especially for films with strong social relevance. This fund will be managed by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation. To ensure Kerala remains competitive on the global stage, the policy encourages the production of films in other Indian and foreign languages within the state. A single-window film facilitation centre will also be launched to simplify permit procedures and attract more projects to the region. The policy highlights that India, producing over 2,000 films annually, remains the world's largest film-producing nation. Malayalam cinema ranks second after Hindi, with around 300 films produced each year. In 2023, Kerala contributed over ₹2,000 crore to the national box office, reflecting its significant role in India's cinematic economy. A new Film Development Council, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and co-chaired by Culture Minister Saji Cherian, is proposed as the apex body to guide implementation. The council will also include an industry representative as vice-chairperson. The draft has been circulated to stakeholders and will be deliberated further during the conclave, which concludes on Sunday. The government reiterated its commitment to consulting film bodies on matters such as fair wages, insurance, and working conditions, ensuring that reforms benefit every layer of the industry. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Son of Sardaar 2 box office collection Day 2: Son of Sardaar 2, starring Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur in the lead roles, was expected to open strong at the box office. A sequel to the successful comedy film Son of Sardaar, the movie earned Rs 7.25 crore on its opening day and witnessed a slight rise in collections on Day 2. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Son of Sardaar 2 saw a 3.45% uptick in collections, earning Rs 7.50 crore and bringing its total to Rs 14.75 crore in India. Son of Sardaar 2 recorded an overall Hindi occupancy of 25.94% on Saturday. Morning shows saw 8.05% occupancy, afternoon shows registered 22.96%, and evening shows rose to 28.10%. The highest footfall came during the night shows, which reported an occupancy of 44.65%. The Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta gave Son of Sardaar 2 a rating of 2 stars. She wrote in her review, 'Ajay Devgn leads this enterprise which wants to be a laugh-a-minute, madcap caper, but keeps slackening? Pair your hero with an age-appropriate leading lady, and give him a few chuckle-worthy lines.' The Ajay Devgn-starrer is currently facing tough competition at the box office from Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's debut film Saiyaara, which has touched the Rs 285 crore mark in India. Back in 2012, Son of Sardaar had a box office clash with Yash Raj Films' Jab Tak Hai Jaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Anushka Sharma. However, despite the mighty clash, Son of Sardaar managed to do good business at the worldwide box office.
