Wong's claims on LPG subsidy, politically motivated - Armizan

KOTA KINABALU (May 23): The recent statement by Tanjung Aru assemblyman Datuk Junz Wong regarding liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) regulations is politically motivated and misleading, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.
'It is politically motivated as he directed accusations at the State Government and GRS, linking the matter to the state election. In reality, the issue raised falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government,' Armizan clarified.
Speaking to reporters today, Armizan criticised Wong, a Warisan representative within the Federal Government, for allegedly attempting to tarnish the government's image.
'The claims are misleading. This is not a new policy or regulation under the Madani Government, nor is it a subsidy cut, as alleged. The matter refers to the Supply Control (Amendment) Regulations 2021, which have been in effect since 15 October 2021, under the previous administration,' he explained.
He further clarified that the 'notice' mentioned by Junz was not a compound offence but a standard Premise Inspection Statement issued by KPDN officers during routine inspections.
'These inspections check for compliance with laws under KPDN's purview, including price tagging, weighing and measuring instruments, and Controlled Goods Permit requirements,' he said.
Addressing Wong's claim on LPG usage, Armizan explained that businesses storing over 42 kilograms of LPG at any one time — more than three 14 kg cylinders — must apply for a Controlled Goods Permit, as stipulated in the 2021 regulation.
'I doubt that many small eateries, let alone stalls like Ramly burger vendors mentioned by Junz Wong, store or use more than 42 kg of LPG at once. This requirement is likely to affect only larger business operations,' said Armizan.
He also challenged Wong's claim that costs would be unfairly passed on to the public, reminding that LPG subsidies are funded by taxpayers.
'It is not reasonable for all business costs — especially for large-scale operations — to be borne by public funds. If Junz Wong has specific examples of businesses affected, he should bring them to my attention for verification,' Armizan said.
He added that the government spent RM3.4 billion on LPG subsidies in 2024 alone, emphasizing that it is a consumption subsidy, not a business support measure.
Wong had earlier raised concerns about a directive disqualifying food business operators from LPG subsidies starting May 21, alleging that those using over 42 kg monthly would be required to switch to unsubsidised cylinders costing RM76 each — up from the subsidised RM26.60 per 14 kg cylinder. He warned this could lead to higher food prices for consumers.

Jeffrey questions Putrajaya over Ambalat deal without consulting Sabah

Jeffrey KOTA KINABALU (July 1): Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan is demanding an explanation from the Federal Government over Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent statement in Indonesia regarding plans for joint development in the disputed Ambalat maritime area near Sabah's borders. 'Ambalat has already been decided as an area within Sabah's territory. Why was this decision made without consulting Sabah? That is not right. It is another way of bypassing Sabah's rights,' said Jeffrey. Expressing his disappointment, he said Sabah must be consulted on matters involving its territorial rights. 'We need an explanation, and I will submit a question in Parliament regarding Ambalat, specifically to seek clarification from the Prime Minister. We will wait for his response,' he said. On June 27, national news agency Bernama reported that Anwar and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto had reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation, including the potential for joint development in the maritime border area between the two countries. Anwar was quoted as saying that both sides should explore economic cooperation in the maritime zone, including the Ambalat area, for the benefit of their respective populations. 'If there still appears to be a deadlock in negotiations in terms of principles, regulations and laws, then there should be no obstacle for us to accelerate economic cooperation, including what Prabowo mentioned earlier regarding a joint development authority. 'Even in the Ambalat area, if we wait for full resolution, it might take another two decades. So let us take advantage of this moment to achieve results that benefit both countries and defend the interests of our people in a region quite far from the main border,' said Anwar. The Ambalat region, located off the east coast of Sabah and rich in natural resources, has long been a subject of overlapping claims by Malaysia and Indonesia.

Powerwell accepts RM16.6mil switchboard orders for hyperscale data centre project

KUALA LUMPUR: Powerwell Holdings Bhd has accepted purchase orders (POs) worth RM16.63 million to supply switchboards and components for a hyperscale data centre project at Elmina Business Park, Selangor. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the electrical products manufacturer said its wholly-owned subsidiary, Kejuruteraan Powerwell Sdn Bhd, received the POs from RYBE Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd, Protech Builders Sdn Bhd, and LFE Engineering Sdn Bhd. Powerwell said the POs, accepted between April and July this year, are expected to be fulfilled by the first quarter of 2026. "The POs are expected to contribute positively to Powerwell's consolidated earnings and net assets for the financial year ending March 31, 2026," it said. Powerwell added that it does not foresee any exceptional risks apart from normal operational risks associated with POs and will take steps to mitigate these risks. In a separate statement, Powerwell managing director Catherine Wong Yoke Yen said the orders reflected the group's technical capability in delivering data centre projects. "We are delighted to have secured these orders, which reflect our strong technical expertise and proven track record, having completed numerous data centre projects for multinational corporations," she said. Wong added that the company's outstanding order book as of end-March 2025 was about RM116 million, excluding the latest POs. -- BERNAMA

ReDI expands cashless society ecosystem nationwide

Armizan integrating with traders at the Papar general market during a walkabout on Tuesday. – Bernama photo PAPAR (July 1): The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry continues its commitment to strengthening the local retail sector through the Retail Digitalisation Initiative (ReDI). The implementation of ReDI aims to introduce digital-based business methods, particularly the use of e-wallets among traders, especially in rural areas, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. 'To support this effort, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has organised the ReDI Borneo Roadshow 2025. This ten-day roadshow began on 26 June 2025 with its first location in Sematan, Sarawak, and is scheduled to conclude on 5 July 2025 in Tawau, Sabah, as the final stop,' he said in a statement on Tuesday. The organisation of the ReDI Borneo Roadshow 2025 is a proactive step by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry in its efforts to expose rural traders to operating digital-based businesses, he added. 'The main focus is on the use of e-wallet facilities in purchase transactions and creating a cashless society ecosystem nationwide, particularly in rural areas.' This ReDI initiative offers efficient financial management, business growth opportunities, a variety of payment options, as well as more effective inventory management, from which traders can benefit. This effort is carried out with the support and cooperation of strategic partners such as Bank Negara Malaysia, PayNet, and registered e-wallet providers including Touch 'n Go eWallet, GrabPay, ShopeePay, MAE Maybank, Boost and SPay Global. 'Since its launch on 27 August 2022 until 31 May 2025, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has assisted 22,368 traders nationwide to register with e-wallet platforms. This figure exceeds the target of 15,000 registered traders by 2025 set under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK-12), achieving over 100 per cent of the target. 'From 1 January to 31 May 2025 alone, the total number of traders registered under ReDI nationwide stood at 3,229. Of this number, 1,120 registered traders were from Sabah and 1,799 from Sarawak. As of the five days the ReDI Borneo Roadshow 2025 has been conducted, the total number of registered traders from Sabah and Sarawak is 3,708,' said Armizan.
