Manchester United would have ‘good season' with top-five Premier League finish

Amad believes that a top-five finish in the Premier League would represent a good 2025-26 season for Manchester United. United recorded a 15th-place finish in 2024-25, their lowest since they were relegated from the top division in 1974, although they did reach the Europa League final — losing 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur. Ruben Amorim's side will not be playing in European football this season as a result. Advertisement Fifth place would also have been enough to qualify United for the Champions League in 2025-26, due to the Premier League's superior UEFA coefficient in 2024-25 securing it an extra spot for next term. This summer, United have added Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon as first-team squad arrivals, with an agreement in place to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. 'A good season will be top five,' Amad said after United's goalless draw against Leeds United on Saturday, the club's first pre-season match. 'I hope we can achieve that top five at the end of the season because I think we would deserve it. 'I think the fans have to be patient with us. There's a new manager, with new players and new tactics, so we know last season wasn't really good for the team. 'But I think this season we will win a lot with him and I hope we are going to achieve a lot of good things by the end of the season.' United's pre-season continues with their Premier League Series tour of the United States with matches against West Ham United, Bournemouth and Everton between July 27 and August 3, before playing Fiorentina on August 9. Atletico Madrid make move to sign €40m Chelsea defender

Atletico Madrid are in the market for a new central defender, with new targets being lined up after ending their interest in Tottenham Hotspur's Cristian Romero, who had been their priority for the position. So far this summer, Atleti have signed Alex Baena, Matteo Ruggeri, Thiago Almada and Johnny Cardoso, and while moves are being made for Ademola Lookman to complete their attacking options, the club's priority is to add a new centre-back to compete with Robin Le Normand, Jose Maria Gimenez and Robin Le Normand. After walking away from the Romero deal, Atleti have continued snooping in the Premier League, with interest having been registered in Chelsea's Renato Veiga, who was on loan at Juventus last season. And they have now taken the next step in efforts to sign the 21-year-old, who has played five times for Portugal. Image via Getty Images As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Atleti have started talks with Veiga's representatives, and they have been informed that the defender would be open to making the move to the RiyadhAir Metropolitano. Chelsea set steep asking price for Veiga Atleti are preparing to advance their interest in Veiga after receiving this positive response, but it will not be easy to sign him this summer. Chelsea are asking for a package worth at least €40m in order to let him leave, which would represent significant profit for them after he was brought in from FC Basel in 2024 for only €14m. So far this summer, Atleti have already spent in excess of €120m on signing Baena, Ruggeri, Almada and Ruggeri, with approximately €18m having been recouped from the sales of Rodrigo Riquelme (to Real Betis) and Angel Correa (to Tigres). It will be interesting to see whether they have the money available to pursue an agreement with Chelsea for Veiga, who could be a very shrewd signing.

PSG star offers himself to Liverpool

A Paris Saint Germain player looks like he's keen on moving to Liverpool. Over the course of last season, Arne Slot spoke about his admiration for the French Champions League winners several times. LFC x Nike Air Max Buy Now LFC Retro Shirts Buy Now LFC Kits Buy Now LFC Nike Training Buy Now In fact, it was only really PSG who offered any sort of resistance to Liverpool during the season. In a tense two-legged affair, Liverpool were ultimately knocked out on penalties against the eventual champions in the round of 16 in the Champions League. That game proved to be a bitterly disappointing one for the Reds. Although ultimately, Paris Saint Germain definitely deserved their victory. They have an impressive squad and now Luis Enrique's side are expected to make some changes. Among those there might be a player available for Liverpool, who could be the ideal fit for Slot's style of play. We know that with the departure of Jarell Quansah Liverpool are looking at the centre-back market. It's a difficult market at the moment with some of the biggest names having already made their decisions. Dean Huijsen opted in favour of Real Madrid, meanwhile Ilia Zabarnyi has chosen Paris Saint Germain as his destination. Liverpool have looked at a deal for Marc Guehi, although at this stage that move is very much up in the air with Crystal Palace having a firm and steep asking price despite the England international entering the final year of his contract. The Reds will be happy to wait for Guehi, especially because they also risk losing Ibrahima Konate on a free contract next year so the Palace defender could be the perfect replacement for the Frenchman. However, in the meantime, for this season, the Reds still need to make another addition. They don't want to enter the season with just three senior centre-back options available, even if the academy pairing of Amara Nallo and Wellity Lucky are highly rated. And there might be a possible deal on the table for one of the most perfect options for Slot's style of football. According to TBR Paris Saint Germain defender Lucas Beraldo has offered himself to the Reds. The report claims that the player's representatives have made a number of approaches to potential clubs and offered Beraldo to them. Among those teams were Liverpool who had an interest in the Brazilian before he moved to the French giants. Only 21-years-old, Beraldo joined PSG in January 2024, and has made 65 appearances for the club since then. Last season he started 22 league games for the club but made just one start in the Champions League, with Marquinhos and Willian Pacho ahead of him in the pecking order. Not playing above those two is no shame though. Beraldo is still young and he possess the perfect qualities to thrive in Slot's system. He wins a high volume of duels on the ground and in the air and on top of that he is a very composed passer of the ball. In fact as per Wyscout out of centre-backs in Europe's top five leagues last season who averaged over 65% success rate in defensive duels and aerial duels, Beraldo made the most forward passes (30.93 per 90) and had the most accurate pass completion rate (95.13%). Those numbers make him the perfect candidate for Slot's side, and that's why Liverpool might just be tempted by his representative's offer to play for them. Everything hinges on PSG's demands though and how much they are willing to sell him for.
