UFL championship audience drops sharply from 2024
Via Mike Mitchell, the championship game between the D.C. Defenders and the Michigan Panthers averaged 983,000 viewers, with a peak of 1.2 million. The game was televised by ABC.
Last year's UFL championship, pitting Birmingham against San Antonio, averaged 1.57 million viewers on Fox. This year's number represents a 37-percent drop.
Mitchell points out that the game faced direct competition with a Stanley Cup Final contest, Major League Baseball, and the men's College World Series. That's fine, but there will always be other sports going on. It's for the UFL to arrange its schedule to navigate the reality that it's not the only show in town.
The UFL says it's in it for the long haul. If the decline from 2024 to 2025 continues, however, it will be hard to keep it going for long.

Nine months after his death, Fernando Valenzuela stands immortalized in a new mural on the loge‑level wall at Dodger Stadium—a vibrant fusion of art and legacy unveiled Saturday. Painted by Mexican American artist Robert Vargas, the mural shows Valenzuela tipping his cap to the sky in a Dodgers Mexican‑heritage jersey — featuring a green sleeve, red sleeve, white center — alongside two striking images of Valenzuela in his pitching stance. Vargas said the mural is meant to symbolize unity within the Latino community. 'I felt it very important to show that the Latino community has a place within these walls and has had a place within these walls,' Vargas said. He wanted to reflect Valenzuela's spirit that still lives in the hearts of many fans and feature the man behind the player. 'What he did in the community, is what resonates so much more for me than just the player — but the man, the person that he was,' Vargas said. Valenzuela played for the Dodgers from 1980-90. He grew up in Etchohuaquila, a small town in Mexico, and took Major League Baseball by storm in 1981, earning rookie of the year and Cy Young honors. Latino fans who previously felt little connection to the Dodgers were thrilled to see one of their own winning, sparking Fernandomania. Valenzuela wore the No. 34 and it remains a popular jersey worn by fans at Dodger Stadium. Claudio Campo choked up as he gazed at the tribute. Traveling from Phoenix with his son to celebrate the boy's 11th birthday, Campo shared memories of a player whose greatness felt deeply personal. Valenzuela's nickname, 'El Toro,' are inked on Campo's left arm. 'He was a staple for the people that didn't have anything and then where he came from showed that anything is possible if you go ahead and revive what you are,' Claudio said. Fans holding Valenzuela bobbleheads given away by the Dodgers took their pictures in front of the new mural Saturday night. Longtime fan Dulce Gonzalez held back emotion as she showed off her shirt with the name 'Valenzuela' written across it, describing the reason she started watching baseball. 'He was the first Latino player I could truly connect with and be proud of,' she said. For Gonzalez, Valenzuela's story resonated because he came from the same roots, offering representation she had longed for. 'We are a melting pot of races here, people love baseball from all races, but because I am Latina, I feel a little bit more connected,' she said. Her son, Nicolas, dressed in a red and green Dodgers Mexican heritage jersey, said Valenzuela helped heal some wounds after Mexican American families were displaced from their homes in Chavez Ravine shortly before Dodger Stadium was built on the same land. 'He really opened the city up to the Dodgers after a long difficult entry and he really represented triumph over adversity,' Nicolas said.

Chicago Cubs have the best record in MLB after Shota Imanaga's gem and 5 solo home runs fuel 6-0 win
Shota Imanaga pitched twice in seven days against the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. The left-hander racked up two wins, allowing a combined one run on seven hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts in 14 innings against the two storied teams. 'He's one of the best pitchers in the world,' Cubs first baseman Michael Busch said of Imanaga. And the Cubs are the best team in Major League Baseball after Imanaga tossed seven shutout innings Saturday night in a 6-0 win over the Red Sox in front of 40,703 at Wrigley Field. The Cubs (59-39) hit five solo home runs to back Imanaga in surpassing the Detroit Tigers (59-40) for the majors' best record. Leadoff hitter Busch hit the first pitch from Brayan Bello for his 20th home run of the season. Four pitches later, Kyle Tucker went deep for his 18th. Matt Shaw (third), Pete Crow-Armstrong (26th) and Ian Happ (13th) added late blasts to pad the lead and guarantee a series win. The Red Sox (53-47) came to Wrigley on Friday riding a 10-game winning streak but have managed only one run in 18 innings. The Cubs won the opener 4-1. Red Sox leadoff hitter Rob Refsnyder greeted Imanaga (7-3) with a first-pitch double, but Alex Bregman grounded out, then Imanaga struck out Romy Gonzalez and Roman Anthony to end the inning. Best Virginia survives, sets up TBT showdown with Herd That
MORGANTOWN — Best Virginia squandered a 17-point lead to begin the fourth quarter and had to pull off a mini-comeback Friday night to pull off a 72-69 over DuBois (Pa.) Dream in the opening round of TBT. Toby Okani sank two free throws to end the game inside the Charleston Coliseum, but the WVU alumni team, seeded third in the West Virginia Regional, had to overcome a 69-65 deficit in the final moments to do so. BOX SCORE The victory sets up another meeting against Marshall's alumni team, Herd That, at 5 p.m. Sunday (FS1). Herd That — the No. 2 seed in the region — beat SIKH Warriors, 84-71, in the opening round. Best Virginia led 62-45 heading into the fourth quarter, but that's when disaster struck. It turned the ball over six times and made just one basket before the Elam Ending was set up. By that time, Dubois Dream had closed to within 64-60 — the target score was 72 points — and took a 69-65 lead after a dunk from Shane Hunter. Best Virginia's Tre Mitchell scored off a turnover and then took a 70-69 lead from a free throw by Kedrian Johnson and lay-up from Mitchell. The Dream went for the win with a 3-point attempt that came up short and Okani was fouled and went to the line for the win. A 57.3% free-throw shooter during his one season at WVU in 2024-25, Okani calmly sank both free throws for the win. 'Survive and advance sometimes is pretty and sometimes is ugly,' Best Virginia head coach Jarrod West said. 'All of our downfalls and negative plays they created, so you have to give them all the credit. But if we win five more games like that, we walk away with $1 million. To these guys' credit, they're dogs.' James Reese, who played collegiately for Buffalo, North Texas and South Carolina, led Best Virginia with 21 points on 8 of 19 shooting. Mitchell added 13 points and Okani had nine points and 11 rebounds. Best Virginia shot 40% (26 of 65) for the game and turned the ball over 35 times. Jacorey Williams, a former Conference USA Player of the Year while at Middle Tennessee State, scored 29 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Herd That to the second round. Williams began his college career at Arkansas, but landed at Middle Tennessee State after being dismissed from the Razorbacks. Herd That came away with a 46-34 edge on the glass with Derek Cooke Jr. adding eight points and 11 rebounds. Jean Pierre Tokoto added 18 points for Herd That.
