Chicago White Sox get their 41st win — matching last year's total — by beating Los Angeles Angels 6-3

Chicago Tribune14 hours ago
ANAHEIM, Calif. — It wasn't the ideal beginning for Chicago White Sox pitcher Shane Smith in his return from the injured list Friday against the Los Angeles Angels.
Pitching for the first time since July 11 — excluding the two batters he faced in the All-Star Game on July 15 — Smith walked Zach Neto, surrendered a single to Nolan Schanuel and walked Taylor Ward.
That loaded the bases with no outs for Jo Adell. On the second pitch of that showdown, catcher Edgar Quero fired to third and picked off Neto, with Josh Rojas applying the tag.
Smith eventually struck out Adell, but Yoán Moncada walked to load the bases again. He then went to a full count against Logan O'Hoppe before getting the Angels catcher to ground out to third. Smith threw 35 pitches in the first, only 15 strikes, but somehow got out of it without allowing a run.
The Sox received instant offense in the second with solo home runs by Andrew Benintendi and Lenyn Sosa on the way to a 6-3 victory in front of 29,937 at Angel Stadium. Colson Montgomery and Rojas added solo homers in the sixth and ninth, respectively, as the Sox won their 41st game, matching last year's win total.
Smith found some consistency after the first, allowing two runs on two hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 4 1/3 innings after being reinstated from the injured list earlier Friday. He missed time with a left ankle sprain.
Jordan Leasure struck out the first four batters he faced in relief of Smith and collected the victory.
The Sox (41-69) immediately gained momentum after the shaky first when Benintendi led off the second with a home run. Sosa homered with one out.
Miguel Vargas singled and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Luis Robert Jr. in the fourth to make it 3-0. Gustavo Campero hit a two-run homer with one out in the fifth, cutting the Sox lead to 3-2.
Montgomery answered with his solo homer in the sixth, a 433-foot blast that was his sixth of the season.
Montgomery was involved in a game-saving play in the seventh. The Sox led 4-3 with two outs when Schanuel singled to right with runners on first and second.
As Travis d'Arnaud tried to score, Campero raced from first to third. Right fielder Mike Tauchman made a great relay throw to the shortstop Montgomery, who fired to third and got Campero before d'Arnaud touched the plate.
The Sox added an insurance run in the eighth. Robert singled, stole second and scored on a single by Sosa. Rojas led off the ninth with a home run for more cushion.

Released Yankees Hurler Has One-Word Closing Remark For New York

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. It sure was an unceremonious ending for Marcus Stroman with the New York Yankees. With two months to go on his two-year, $37 million contract, Stroman was released by the Yankees on Friday. The Yankees will eat the final $6 million on the deal, and the righty will have the ability to sign with any team of his choice for the stretch run. Stroman was brought to New York to be the steady No. 3 starter he was for two years on the Chicago Cubs. But he never developed any consistency, compiling a 4.69 ERA in 39 outings as a Yankee. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 25: Marcus Stroman #0 of the New York Yankees looks on against the New York Mets at Citi Field on June 25, 2024 in New York City. The Mets defeated the Yankees 9-7. MoreBeing dumped by a team with playoff hopes in the middle of the season is never fun, though, and Stroman didn't have much in the way of sentiment for a goodbye to the Bronx Bombers. On Friday, as the Yankees were battling the Miami Marlins in an eventual 13-12 loss, Stroman posted an Instagram story of the inside of a private plane, with the one-word caption, "Adios." It was a brief parting message, and one appropriate for the situation. Though Stroman never got off the ground in New York, he's had an excellent career to this point, posting a 3.79 ERA over 270 total appearances and making two All-Star Games, one with the Toronto Blue Jays and one with the Cubs. Stroman is only 34, but his stuff took a big step back in the first half of this season, so he'll have to prove it was just a blip on the radar to keep his career going for a few more years to come. Red Sox Announce Brutal Injury Setback For All-Star Pitcher, Jeopardizing Next Season Too

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Boston Red Sox rotation has been better as of late, but overall, the group has been inconsistent. The team just shut down any hope of All-Star Tanner Houck rejoining for the final stretch. Garrett Crochet has carried the rotation all season. Recently, Lucas Giolito and Brayan Bello have started to pitch better, and the team acquired Dustin May at the trade deadline. Houck was placed on the injured list on May 14, but was transferred to the 60-day injured list. On Saturday, Alex Cora announced that Houck's season is over, and he will undergo Tommy John surgery, according to MassLive's Christopher Smith. Houck was an All-Star last season, posting a 3.12 ERA in 30 starts. This year, he had an 8.04 ERA before landing on the injured list. He was working his way back before he was returned to the IL from his rehab assignment after reaggravating his injury. DETROIT, MI - MAY 12: Tanner Houck #89 of the Boston Red Sox checks a baseball after giving up a home run to Gleyber Torres of the Detroit Tigers during the first inning at Comerica Park on May 12, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan. MoreNot only is his season over, but next season may be over for him as well. The typical timeline to get back on the mound after Tommy John surgery is 12-15 months. There is a real chance Houck does not take the mound again until 2027 for the Red Sox. Even though he had struggled this year, there was hope that he could provide quality innings for the team when he returned. Now, the team will rely on Crochet, Giolito, Bello, May and Walker Buehler to carry it through October. Besides Crochet, all of the Red Sox starters have had their fair share of struggles, but things are looking up for them. Buehler has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last four starts, including two quality starts. The Red Sox are 3-1 in those games. Giolito has a 2.17 ERA since June 10 and the Red Sox are 7-2 in those games. Bello has a 2.83 ERA since the start of June, and has gone at least six innings in nine of his 11 starts since then. Luka Doncic agrees to a three-year $165 million contract extension through 2028 with the LA Lakers

Luka Doncic has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, bypassing a chance at free agency next summer to build a long-term future with his new team. The deal keeps Doncic with Los Angeles through 2028. The Slovenian superstar had a player option for the 2026-27 season under his previous contract. A person with knowledge of the deal confirmed the terms to The Associated Press on Saturday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Lakers don't publicly announce the details of contracts. "Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud," Doncic wrote on social media. "Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who've shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning." The Lakers acquired Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks last February in a seismic trade for Anthony Davis. The five-time All-NBA selection and a five-time All-Star averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 assists and 7.7 rebounds per game last season while teaming up with LeBron James for 50 victories and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Los Angeles lost to Minnesota in the first round, but Doncic enjoyed his first months in Hollywood enough to commit to the Lakers. He will return this fall alongside James, who will begin his unprecedented 23rd NBA season. Doncic's growing comfort with the Lakers was already obvious in his offseason activity. He played a significant role in Los Angeles' successful bids to sign Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, persuading the two veterans to team up for the upcoming season. Doncic's extensive regimen of offseason conditioning work has also been well-documented after the Mavericks' questions about his physical commitment to the sport reportedly played a role in his shocking departure from Dallas.
