Cork cyclist Eddie Dunbar up for challenge of very first Tour de France – ‘He has never let us down'

Dunbar (28) will be part of a Jayco-Alula team built around Australian climber Ben O'Connor and Dutch sprinter Dylan Groenewegen.
The 2025 edition of the Tour, starting in Lille on Saturday and ending in Paris on July 27, will see riders travel 3,338.8km over 21 days.
Dunbar's former Kanturk O'Leary Stone Cycling Club coach, Dan Curtin, told The Corkman that he and others from the club will be cheering Dunbar on in France.
'He has never let us down and he is one of our own,' Dan said.
Though Dunbar may be tasked with supporting O'Connor in particular, he could well get chances to go for stage wins. He proved he could race with the best in the peloton last year, by winning two stages of the Vuelta a España.
Despite stepping up to the top level of cycling almost eight years ago, the Banteer racer has had to wait for his chance to compete in the Tou de France, the biggest race in the professional calendar.
Mr Curtin reckons the challenge presented by the Tour will be difficult, but Dunbar will get on 'okay.'
'Eddie will do okay if he plays his cards right and doesn't get too excited during parts of it,' he said.
'I do think it will be a big challenge, but I think he is up for it.'
Mr Curtin said he had a brief call with Dunbar last week. Dunbar told Mr Curtin that he is excited for the challenge and is planning his moves and plays for the race ahead.
'He must keep his eyes open on this one and get the bit of luck that you need,' Mr Curtin said.
The cycling coach said domestic racing and competitions are very different to those on the continent, and native riders may have an advantage, but he fully believes in his former trainee's ability.
'Look, you have shorter distances [in Ireland] and you tend to go all out in the race whereas those on the continent would be pacing themselves and would rely on the other riders to pace them,' he said.
'Eddie will have to do a lot of work.
'The concentration is big because going up a climb is one thing, but you are going down fast and around bad bends.
'Some fellas can climb but can't descend.'
France is currently under an extreme high temperature warning, with heat close to 40C, which will play a factor in riders' preparation for the Tour.
Mr Curtin expects additional feeding points to be made available along the route to allows riders to refuel.
Despite the extreme heat expected, some members of Kanturk O'Leary Stoen Cycling Club will make the journey over to France to support Eddie, who Dan described as a 'dream' to coach.
'He is a pure dream to train,' he said.
Mr Curtin founded Kanturk O'Leary Stone in 1991, and it has since grown to one of Ireland's most active underage clubs.
The club has bred a number of elite level cyclists including Dillon Corkery, Sam Bennett, Archie Ryan and Josie Knight.
'I know of clubs all my life and they never got something like this [elite cyclists] and then we come along and have five or six of them,' Mr Curtin said.
'We might never see the likes of this again, but at least we got there.'

Rúaidhrí O'Connor: Lions must ignore the big scorelines and home in on their flaws

Australian rugby is hoping this Lions tour can be the stimulus to spur a revival in rugby union Down Under and there was excitement in Brisbane about the coverage around this warm-up game and the huge crowd that turned up to see the Queensland Reds take on the tourists. Around the stadium the bars were full and there was plenty of buzz, but inside the ground the crowd seemed disconnected from the fare on the field and there were long periods of eerie silence as the two sets of players went about their business.

Queensland Reds 12 British & Irish Lions 52: Maro Itoje leads by example as tourist make it two from two in Australia

MARO ITOJE led from the front as his Lions made it two from two on Australian soil with his tourists hit the Reds for an eight-try half century. But Andy Farrell's men had a late injury worry when Elliot Daly, himself a late call-up to the starting XV, went off with an arm injury after 66 minutes. 2 Maro Itoje celebrates with a team-mate Luke Cowan-Dickie Credit: AFP And Itoje went down after a blow on the shoulder late on but carried on to ensure his side got over the line safely. Daly was attempting a tackle on home full-back Jock Campbell when he pulled up holding his left arm and was replaced then later seen with blood coming from a bandage on the limb. Itoje was everywhere for the Lions, dominating the line outs, bossing the breakdown and scoring a try in the second half. There were other pluses for boss Andy Farrell with fly-half The Lions were hit by the late withdrawal of Ireland full-back Hugo Keenan, who was listed as sick, and Daly was parachuted in from outside the 23 to start. Keenan has not played on the tour so far, after a calf injury, but is expected to be fit to face the Waratahs in Sydney on Saturday with time running out to make a claim for a Test spot. That means the versatile Saracen has been named in a Lions 23 for the last 11 games stretching back to the tourists' opening game in South Africa in 2021. The Lions led 21-21 at the break but had been given the hurry-up by a Reds side who drew first blood through former Wasps prop Jeff Toomaga-Allen on seven minutes. Itoje's side then returned fire with a double salvo from prop Andrew Porter and Van der Merwe before the skipper stormed over off a short pass from Jamison Gibson-Park on 44 minutes. Morgan, now the only Welsh player left on tour, finished it as a contest when he hit a strong line off Alex Mitchell's pass to cap a great evening for the Osprey. Freeman grabbed a second and Huw Jones ran in from 50 metres before Daly was forced off but the Lions were home and hosed. 2 British and Irish Lions' made in two for two Credit: AFP

Ireland's Ben Healy confirmed for Tour de France

IRELAND'S BEN HEALY has been confirmed to ride at the Tour de France with EF Education-EasyPost. Healy's inclusion on the Tour comes after it was announced yesterday that Cork's Eddie Dunbar would be making his Tour de France debut this year. The 2025 race gets underway in Lille on Saturday. Harry Sweeny, Neilson Powless, Vincenzo Albanese, Michael Valgren, Alex Baudin, Kasper Asgreen, and Marijn van den Berg will all join Healy on the EF Education-EasyPost team. 'I would love to win a stage at the Tour de France,' Healy said following the team announcement. Advertisement 'Last year was my first experience at the Tour and it was just massive. I am really proud of the way we raced last year. We were always part of the action. 'We've got a really balanced team that can go for it almost every day at the Tour. This spring gave me a lot of confidence. I got my best results in the Ardennes and at Strade and had the win in the Basque Country. Since the Dauphiné, I have been working hard up at altitude in Andorra. Now it's time to race.'
