HBCU in-state rivalry decides SWAC Baseball Championship
The offensive showcase featured a combined 24 hits and 20 runs. Bethune-Cookman's Andrey Martinez was the standout performer, going 3-for-6 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth that sealed the game. Jorge Rodriguez added a two-run homer in the eighth, while Jeter Polledo went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a double.
Florida A&M jumped into contention with a six-run surge across the sixth and seventh innings. William Brown sparked the Rattlers with a two-run homer and scored three times. Justen Crews matched the momentum with a two-run shot of his own in the seventh.
Bethune-Cookman led 3-0 early, but FAMU fought back to tie and eventually take a brief lead. The Wildcats responded with three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth before Martinez's dramatic walk off blast in the bottom of the ninth.
Reliever Joel Core (6-1) earned the win for BCU, closing the door with 1.1 innings of scoreless work. Florida A&M's Carson Kelly (6-2) took the loss after surrendering eight runs (four earned) over 7.1 innings.
With the victory, Bethune-Cookman claims the SWAC Baseball Championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats will play on representing HBCU baseball in the postseason, capping a resilient conference season with championship gold.

Tennessee basketball to host Duke at Food City Center
The 2025-26 men's basketball season will be the 11th for Tennessee under head coach Rick Barnes. He has compiled a 232–109 (111–66 SEC) record with the Vols. Barnes guided Tennessee to a 2022 SEC Tournament title, two SEC regular-season championships (2018, 2024) and two NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearances (2024-25). On Friday, he announced a preseason basketball exhibition game against Duke at Food City Center. "We have so much respect for Jon Scheyer and for the Duke basketball program," Barnes said. "It is an exciting opportunity for our players and our fans to host the Blue Devils here in Knoxville for a high-level exhibition game. We are confident this matchup will benefit both teams and really help prepare us for the upcoming season." Tennessee will host Duke on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. EDT. Top Clemson baseball roster hopeful for 2026 officially signs with MLB team
One of Clemson baseball's biggest roster hopefuls for 2026 has signed a professional contract. As expected, All-American outfielder Ryan Wideman signed with the San Diego Padres late Wednesday night. The Padres selected Wideman in the third round of the MLB draft earlier this month. The son of former Clemson basketball player Tom Wideman, Ryan Wideman was one of the top players in the transfer portal following his junior season this summer and transferred to the Tigers on June 11. His chances of being drafted and forgoing his senior season were always a threat, but being taken No. 99 overall with an estimated pick value of $773,000 made his signing feel pretty inevitable. Wideman played in all 60 games last season at Western Kentucky and hit .398 with 10 home runs, 36 extra base hits, and 68 RBIs. He also stole 45 bases in 47 attempts as a top-of-the-order threat. Clemson signee Dax Kilby, an 18-year-old shortstop from Newnan High School in Georgia, was another player the Tigers hoped to have on their 2026 roster that was taken early in MLB's draft. The New York Yankees drafted Kilby in the first round with the No. 39 overall pick and formally announced his signing on July 18. Clemson finished 45-18 overall last season and was the No. 11 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers made their third straight regional appearance under coach Erik Bakich, but the program's College World Series drought officially reached 15 years since their last appearance in 2010.
