Northbank Road To Open Overnight
From Monday to Friday the slip will continue to be open overnight and then closed from 9am to 4pm daily. Following requests from the community, there will be an additional opening on Wednesdays from 12pm to 1pm, starting this coming Wednesday 23 July.
As crews continue to work across the region following the June-July weather event, there is some good news for Northbank Road residents today with the road now open overnight under stop/go traffic light management from 4pm today.
'Marlborough Roads' crews have continued to work at multiple sites on Northbank Road and its side roads to regain access. The crew at the slip, 2km from the start of the road have made some great progress this week,' Marlborough Roads System Manager Wayne Oldfield said.
'They have managed to establish a catch bench at the base of the slip to collect any uncontrolled rockfalls. This means that we can now open the road overnight under stop/go traffic light management so from 4pm the road will be opened under traffic lights for the weekend.'
The slip will be inspected throughout the day and if deemed unsafe the road will be closed and an update sent via Council's Facebook Page and Antenno.
Mr Oldfield said the slip was complex and had contained around 25,000 tonnes of rock, was around 40m in height and 60m in length.
'At this stage, we are unable to have a lunchtime opening every day due to the additional time this would add for the overall timeline of works. We want to get as much clearance works completed on the slip as we can while the weather is more stable.
'The openings will continue to be reviewed and if there is an opportunity to increase them safely, this will be done,' Mr Oldfield said.

Mr Oldfield said when people were travelling near or past work sites across the region, they should ensure they keep outside any fences or barriers for their safety and adhere to, and do not move, any traffic or safety management in place.
Marlborough Roads' crews have also been working to clear a second major slip 17km from the start of the Northbank Road this week. This section of the road is now open to one lane and will remain under stop/go traffic light management.
'Work continues on Noel's Bridge, further down Northbank Road, to regain access. The bridge will be accessible to residents for essential travel including heavy vehicles from 4pm this afternoon.
'Next week, there will be rock protection work at both Top Valley Bridge and Noel's Bridge, along with other work sites so people should expect multiple delays,' Mr Oldfield said.

'In the days and weeks that have followed, our focus has been to regain access for communities as well as inspect roads to understand the scale of damage, as we prepare to move into the recovery phase,' Mr Oldfield said. 'We always try to strike a balance between going as quickly as possible to clear slips and repair damage versus ensuring communities and industry have some access wherever possible to essential services and amenities.' SH63 sustained major damage at the start of the event at Waihopai Bridge and Andersons Floodway, cutting off Wairau Valley township. 'Multiple crews worked through the weekend to create a temporary bypass route for residents and essential travel. Although the road has access to all vehicles, it remains heavily damaged and extreme caution is advised around work sites,' he said. On local roads damage was spread across the region from Awatere in the south to the French Pass to the north. Northbank and Port Underwood roads were hit particularly hard. On Northbank Road, 2km from the start of the road, a slip estimated to be around 3,000m3 came down, closing the road. 'To regain emergency access, a temporary road was built over slip material. Crews then worked to create a bench so that loose material would be caught, so the road could be opened overnight. Crews continue to work to clear the slip from the top, some 30m above the ground.' Engineers estimate that 20,000m3 of material will need to be removed from the site. Further along Northbank Road and its side roads, works have been undertaken on slip and tree clearance, pavement repairs, and rock armouring and temporary bridge repairs on both Top Valley and Noels bridges. Mr Oldfield said Port Underwood Road was closed due to significant damage from slips, fallen trees and dropouts and up to four crews at once have been working to clear access. This was achieved between Waikawa and Oyster Bay on 28 June. Works remain underway to re-open the road and enable the heavy vehicle restriction to be lifted between Tumbledown Road to Oyster Bay. 'In the Sounds, a large slip on Queen Charlotte Drive near Momorangi closed the road for three days. Kenepuru Road and Moetapu Bay Road also suffered slips, fallen trees and dropouts, as did the French Pass and Pelorus areas. Crews restored access quickly and planned Marlborough Roads Recovery works have continued,' Mr Oldfield said. He acknowledged the ongoing support of affected communities and recognised the impact these weather events had on their day to day. 'We also appreciate the support shown to our contractors and staff. These crews are working hard to get roads restored. We are responsible for their safety and wellbeing and respect and courtesy, both for them and the traffic management measures put in place for your safety, is appreciated,' Mr Oldfield said. Northbank Road Slip Saturday Closure
Marlborough Roads crews will be working at pace tomorrow – Saturday 26 July - on the Northbank Road slip ahead of rain forecast next week. This will require a road closure from 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm at the slip site, 2km from the start of Northbank Road. Marlborough Roads System Manager Wayne Oldfield said with heavy rain forecast on Tuesday there was a need to progress works on the Northbank Road slip as quickly as possible. 'To achieve this crews will be undertaking works this Saturday. Due to forecast bad weather it is very important that we do this work to improve the stability of the slip before the weather hits,' Mr Oldfield said. 'The more that can be cleared, especially when weather is favourable, the shorter the overall duration of the closures will be.' Contractors estimate that 20,000m3 of material is needed to be cleared from the slip which came down following the late June weather event.
