
Ascot has been ruined by the middle classes
Forget the Royal Enclosure, now so thoroughly middle-class and non-exclusive as to be considered a joke by true chins – the real party is in the Windsor Enclosure. Not that I've ever been invited, more's the pity. There, for the price of £35, you will get the first view of the royal procession, enjoy live music and not be subjected to any official dress code, the subject of which will fill feature supplements in the broadsheets for this entire week. Horse and Hound carefully describes the Windsor Enclosure as 'ideal for large groups'. Ideal, in other words, for a proper knees-up – which is what Ascot ought to be. Except it's not. The Royal Ascot committee has engaged in aggressive commercialisation, with strict policing of enclosures using badges and QR codes by gatekeepers such as Felicity Barnard, formerly of West Ham and Arsenal management. Ascot is now an exercise in manicured social segregation led by the Middleton classes.
It doesn't have to be like this. Horsey and racing circles have always been predicated on one of the great curiosities of English social life: snob and mob. S&M, as writer Ed West puts it, works on the horseshoe theory: 'popular with the toffs at the top and the plebs at the bottom, with not much interest in between'. This social horseshoe is why, according to The Spectator's agony aunt, Mary Killen, in horsey circles, 'everyone is equal over and under the turf'. Other racing events such as Cheltenham combine snob and mob to spectacular effect, leading, as one chin quietly put it to me, to 'a naff-cot strike' in recent years. Of course, the upper classes still congregate at Ascot in the White's or Cavalry & Guards tents and will always be seen braying away over a picnic in Car Park One, but true toffs prefer something a bit more bonkers and a lot more louche.

Other examples of social horseshoe institutions that work on the snob and mob theory are the Army, where officers and squaddies have always socialised uproariously together, and shooting, where the guns and the beaters are blissfully happy in each other's company between drives. Maybe snob and mob works best in the country, far away from liberal urban agglomerations that flatten the bend out of all recognition. And, in some ways, we can see the wild and relentless success of Clarkson's Farm as the upper-lower class union at its best. While I'm not suggesting that Jeremy Clarkson is an aristocrat, there is some horseshoe class magic at work between his relationship with Kaleb and Gerald, both so removed from each other socially as to find the whole thing hilarious. and exchange insults lovingly.
Outside of the social calendar, I notice snob and mob uniting in all sorts of different and subtle ways in everyday life: the love of dogs and their filth, the preference for instant coffee (not a drop of oat milk in sight), the large number of children, the blissfully tolerant attitude to smoking indoors, the shared love of tattoos (see Queen Vic); I could go on. Forget Freud's narcissism of small differences, this is the happy clarity of large differences: upper and lower classes can act in the same way because there is no danger of either being mistaken. Politically, snob and mob may also account for why the lower classes regard Boris Johnson and, to some extent, Jacob Rees-Mogg as one of their own.
But for now, back to Ascot. I'll be there in a few hours, looking wistfully on at the brilliantly bonkers, hedonistic, alive punters in the Windsor Enclosure and vowing – as I always do – never to go into the Royal Enclosure ever again. Maybe there's a boxing match I could go to next year instead. Far more my scene.

For a Brummie like me, Ozzy Osbourne's voice mattered
In the olden days, you could listen over and again to your musical heroes do their thing, yet go for years without hearing them speak. The songs themselves gave few clues to the real accents of the singers. Singing seemed to iron out regional vowel sounds so that, in song, everyone sounded the same – rather American. I was aware that both Slade and (half of) Led Zeppelin were from the same neck of the woods as me, but I struggled to pick up any trace of Walsall in Noddy Holder's singing voice or any hint of West Bromwich in Robert Plant's. It was years before I heard either of them talking properly in their own proper Black Country accents. I loved it. I'm talking about the 1970s here, when there were fewer radio or television interviews, and very little in the way of what came to be known as reality shows. Even when the 70s turned into the 80s and I was old enough to go to concerts, the spoken words of British frontmen and women, when they found something to say between songs, sounded at best neutral and at worst mid-Atlantic. Over the years, with all the touring or living in the States, their original English accents could even desert them completely. I never saw Black Sabbath live, but I suspect Ozzy Osbourne, even as he addressed the crowd through a mouthful of bat's head in Iowa, sounded as Brummie as could be. From the beginning to the end, while speaking if not singing, he talked like a bloke from Birmingham should talk. You could take the man out of Aston, but this man's accent never left the place. For me, this was always important, even though Ozzy's accent made mine sound as posh as a minor royal's. If you get chance, have a look at Rockfield: The Studio on the Farm, a film about the studio in Monmouthshire. Fifty years after Black Sabbath first went there, you'll hear Ozzy talking about it in the same accent he'd have had back then. 'We'd never been in a studio; we'd never been on a farm. So everything was new. You'd come and see a cow in a field, you know. We were from the streets of Aston – the only thing we ever saw was a police horse. It was brilliant.'

The clip was posted on the club's official YouTube channel before somebody spotted the error and took it down, though it was still spread far and wide on social media. In the video, a female presenter introduces the segment by saying: 'Welcome to 10 things you need to know about our new signing. This time we're going to do it about Marcus Rashford. The move is hardly a secret and there was more evidence of the preparation for his announcement taking place on Tuesday. Rashford had been spotted by an influencer filming with Barcelona's media team on the pitch next to a British prop of a red phone box. The soon to be ex-Man United forward spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa and Ruben Amorim made it clear he would not be part of his future plans. Barcelona nearly took Rashford in January but had to sell before they could buy and now the deal is finally on the brink of being announced. It has also been revealed that the 27-year-old will wear the No 14 for his new side. According to Mundo Deportivo, he will have the honour of wearing the same shirt that Johan Cruyff made famous for the Catalan side. Rashford is also known to be a huge admirer of Thierry Henry, who also wore No 14. Rashford's former United team-mate Paul Pogba reacted to the news of his impending move to Barcelona, telling YouTuber IShowSpeed: 'That's crazy, but I'm happy for him because they [United] took his number. Manchester United are losing a great player. Unlucky for them. Rashford is closing in on a season-long loan move from Man United to Barcelona 'It's great for Barcelona to be honest. I'm not even talking about United, because they've bought a few new players and the new manager wants to do his thing I guess. 'It's not really his [Amorim's] fault. If he doesn't believe in someone. He needs to win. If he doesn't win they're going to sack him.' Rashford's No 10 shirt at United was taken by recent arrival Matheus Cunha, who joined the club from Wolves for £62.5m.

Run Sister Run is a winding descent into tragedy
Photo by Marc Brenner In classical Greek tragedy the audience is forced to watch as the hero sleepwalks towards their fate. In the playwright Chloë Moss's Run Sister Run, this descent into tragedy takes place in reverse. Proleptic irony is swapped out for Chekhovian drug addiction. We first meet two Irish sisters, Connie (Jo Herbert) and Ursula (Kelly Gough) in middle age. Through a series of flashbacks and call-backs, the vicious cyclical patterns that have shaped their relationship over four decades become clear. Ursula wrangles misfortune after misfortune, tangled in self-harm, surrogacy and indeterminable pills. With its folding-chair metal seating, the brick basement of the Arcola Theatre is an apt venue for the themes explored by director Marlie Haco's production: intimate and tragically uncomfortable. Designer Tomás Palmer's set is stripped back: upturned buckets and dried flowers are the few props that accompany a thin, horizontal mirror suspended at head-height. Alex Forey's white flood-lighting spills down from above the mirror, with an occasional strobe effect between scenes inducing a sense of chaos. Palmer's costume design is naturalistic and simple; ultimately, the message of the play is that tragedies like these can happen to normal people. Gough's vocal endurance is impressive. She regularly lapses into drug-induced shrieks, but is also capable of tender moments that juxtapose with the madness. More restrained, Herbert's talent is also on show, as she demonstrates the reversal of Connie's social mobility, with her middle-class English drone gradually slipping back into a broad Irish accent. The dance segments that take place in scene transitions are incongruous and discordant, untethered from the narrative. But the play's core themes of nature vs nurture and codependence are well articulated. Run Sister Run leaves the audience deep in thought, even if those thoughts sometimes include: 'What's going on now?
