Syrian Presidency Announces Immediate and Comprehensive Ceasefire in Sweida - Jordan News

Jordan News2 days ago
The Syrian Presidency announced a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire in the city of Sweida, in a statement released on Saturday, citing the need to spare Syrian blood and preserve the unity and integrity of the country's territory and people. اضافة اعلان 'In light of the delicate circumstances the country is going through, and out of concern for the blood of Syrians, the unity of Syrian territory, and the safety of its people, and in response to national and humanitarian responsibility, the Presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic announces a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire,' the statement read. The presidency urged all parties to give space to the Syrian state, its institutions, and its forces to implement this ceasefire responsibly, in a way that ensures stability and puts an end to the bloodshed. It also called on all parties, without exception, to fully comply with the decision, immediately halt all hostilities in all areas, ensure the protection of civilians, and facilitate the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid. The statement added that security forces had been deployed in several areas to enforce the ceasefire, maintain public order, and protect citizens and their property, thereby supporting de-escalation and stability. The presidency warned that any violation of the ceasefire would be considered a clear breach of national sovereignty and would be met with the necessary legal measures in accordance with the constitution and applicable laws. The province of Sweida has been witnessing violence for nearly a week following clashes between Bedouin tribal fighters and Druze factions—a religious minority also present in Lebanon and Israel.
The death toll from the violence in Sweida has risen to 718, according to an updated tally reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Saturday.

Syrian President Sharaa survives three assassination attempts in seven months: Report

Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa has narrowly escaped three separate assassination attempts within the last seven months, according to a report by Yedioth Ahronoth. The first attempt allegedly took place in March as Sharaa was leaving the People's Palace in Damascus. Turkish security personnel, who are part of his protection detail, detected unusual movement near the presidential convoy. Three Syrian guards apprehended the suspected attacker, who was later taken in for questioning. Yedioth Ahronoth claimed Sharaa insisted on keeping the incident secret, determined to project an image of strength and control. A second, more elaborate attempt occurred during Sharaa's trip to Daraa in the south. Two individuals acting suspiciously were spotted by both Syrian and Turkish security teams. Acting quickly, the presidential security detail diverted Sharaa's motorcade just minutes before it was due to pass through the targeted route. The most recent attempt, described as the most dangerous, was an ambush planned along a road frequently used by the President when traveling from the People's Palace. A gunman had reportedly taken position to attack, but details about how the attempt was foiled remain unclear. The incident has fueled speculation about Sharaa's abrupt decision to leave Damascus shortly afterward. Confirming the threats, US Special Envoy for Syria and Ambassador to Turkiye, Thomas Barrack, said the assassination attempts were real and warned of 'extremely serious threats' against Sharaa's life. He emphasized that ensuring the Syrian president's safety was of critical importance.
