Protesters firm on demand for canals cancellation
Lawyers, political and nationalist parties, and several civil society organisations continued their protest sit-in against the canals project at the Babarloi Bypass for an eighth consecutive day. Organisers claimed that so far, more than 200,000 people, including women and children, had participated in the protest.
Due to the sit-in, long queues of vehicles formed as traffic from Sindh to Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), and Balochistan remained suspended. Similar protests were also ongoing on many highways at Kamoon Shaheed, Dharki, Kandhkot, and other locations.
Addressing the protesters at Babarloi, Karachi Bar Association (KBA) President Amir Nawaz Waraich said there were reports of some police action against the protesters and warned that they would not yield to such tactics.
"I will tell the police officers that if you disturb the protesters or make any move, the entire Sindh will be shut down, and you will be responsible for the consequences," he warned. "Under no circumstances will we end the sit-in until a notification [cancelling the canals project] is issued."
Waraich stated that the federal government had been given two days to issue the cancellation notification. "If the notification is not issued by then, we will block the railway track at Rohri," the lawyer leader declared.
Speaking at the event, Allama Rashid Mahmood Soomro, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) provincial chief, vowed that the struggle against the Indus canals would continue until the project was abandoned.
The JUI-F leader rejected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's announcement on Thursday about suspending work on the canals and convening a Council of Common Interests (CCI) meeting to build consensus on the issue.
"When the prime minister issued the notification [approving the canals], did he convene the CCI then? Did he consult the ECNEC [Executive Committee of the National Economic Council]? Did he involve Irsa [Indus River System Authority]?"
Soomro argued that if the canal notification was issued without consultation, why was a CCI meeting necessary to withdraw it? "We will not accept this drama," he said, adding that the prime minister had the authority to cancel the project outright.
Commenting on India's suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, Soomro warned: "When we refuse to share our water with Punjab, Balochistan, or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who is India to stop it? We will fight for our water-no matter what."

ISLAMABAD: The Standing Committee of the National Assembly on Housing and Works met in Pakistan Housing Authority (PHA-Foundation), Shaheed-e-Millat Secretariat on Thursday, under the chairmanship of Moulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, MNA. The committee confirmed the minutes of the previous meeting held on May 2, 2025, and reviewed the implementation status of earlier recommendations. The committee passed the Pakistan Infrastructure Development and Assets Management Authority Bill, 2024, with amendments and reservations, including provisions to ensure proper adjustment of PWD employees without compromising their rights. The Standing Committee on Housing and Works took serious notice of the ministry's lack of seriousness and its failure to brief the committee on FGEHA-related issues. To address matters including pending payments for land acquisition, built-up property, and other concerns in FGEHA housing projects, the committee formed a sub-committee under the convenor-ship of Anjum Aqeel Khan, MNA, with Seema Mohiuddin Jamali, Ibrar Ahmad, and Mehboob Shah, MNAs, as members. The CEO of PHA-F provided a detailed update on the organisation's structure, staffing, mandate, and housing project progress. He highlighted PHA-F's role as a self-sustaining executing arm of the Ministry of Housing and Works, focused on delivering affordable housing nationwide without government grants. The committee appreciated his efforts and directed the CDA to prioritise development of 17th Avenue and other related projects to facilitate PHA-F's schemes. ECP reserves verdict in reserved seats case
ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has reserved its verdict in the reserved seats case involving five political parties and their 71 candidates. A five-member ECP full bench heard the case on Monday. The legal counsels from the political parties concerned appeared before the bench and gave arguments in favour of the allocation of reserved seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly to the respective political parties, before the bench reserved the verdict, likely to be announced in the coming days. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazal (JUI-F) has submitted 21 nominations for the seats reserved for women and non-Muslims in KPA. Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) has submitted 15 nominations, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) 14 nominations, Awami National Party (ANP) 11 nominations and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians (PTIP) has submitted 10 nominations to the ECP for KPA reserved seats. The allocation of reserved seats on the part of ECP on 2nd July, in pursuance of the apex court's 27th June order, suggested that PML-N has received the largest chunk of 43 reserved seats, followed by 15 reserved seats having gone to PPP, and 12 seats to JUI-F, as the poll body has allotted a total of 74 of 77 reserved seats to other political parties in four Assemblies. In KPA, of the 25 allotted seats, comprising 21 women and four non-Muslim seats, JUI-F received 10 seats (eight women, two non-Muslims), PML-N got seven reserved seats (six women and a non-Muslim), PPP also got seven reserved seats (six women and a non-Muslim), and ANP received a woman seat. 'No concept of judges' permanent transfer'
The Karachi Bar Association and PTI leader Shoaib Shaheen Advocate have challenged the Supreme Court's order in a case related to transfer of judges to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) and a subsequent change in the IHC judges' seniority list. The petitioners have contended that the June 20 verdict of a constitutional bench of the SC has misinterpreted the Constitution and wrongly inferred the concept of a permanent transfer from the Article 200 of the Constitution. Article 200 of the Constitution deals with the transfer of high court judges. It outlines the process for transferring a judge from one high court to another. According to the article, the president can transfer a judge, but only with their consent and after consultation with the chief justice of Pakistan and the chief justices of both high courts involved. The petitioners have contended there is no provision of a permanent transfer of a superior court judge in the Constitution and only the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) is entitled to fill vacant positions in high courts and the apex court. The petitions also argue that the president also does not have the authority to determine seniority of judges and urged the SC to revisit its order and declare it null and void. In a majority verdict, an SC constitutional bench on June 20 upheld the transfer of three provincial high court judges to the IHC, noting that these transfers could not be declared new appointments. However, the majority judges partially remanded the matter to the President of Pakistan to determine the seniority of the transferred judges after examining and vetting their service record "as soon as possible, including the question of whether the transfer is on a permanent or temporary basis". Later on June 29, President Asif Ali Zardari named Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar as the senior-most judge of the IHC, following a determination of judicial seniority.
