Melbourne Cup prizemoney to be paid from first to 24th after $10m race confirmed

News.com.au12 hours ago
Racing Victoria has confirmed prizemoney increases for Australia's most famous and best races.
Melbourne Cup prizemoney has officially increased to $10m with all starters to share in the bounty.
The Cox Plate has also been boosted to $6m – up from $5m – to mark the historic last weight-for-age championship on the traditional Moonee Valley Racecourse before a major redevelopment.
Racing Victoria is set to confirm prizemoney schedule for the 2025-25 season on Thursday.
This masthead on Monday revealed the Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate prizemoney decisions.
VRC chief executive Kylie Rogers has welcomed the Melbourne Cup prizemoney increase.
'We are thrilled to finally be able to allocate the prizemoney the Lexus Melbourne Cup deserves,' Rogers said.
'It's the 'People's Cup' and frankly $10m allocated across all participants from one to 24 keeps the dream alive for all local, domestic and international participants.'
Prizemoney historically for the Cup has been paid down to 12th place from $4.4m to $160,000.
While the status quo remains for the top half of the Cup field, from the first Tuesday in November this year 13th to 24th will each receive $100,000.
Last year the Melbourne Cup carried $8m prizemoney and a $750,000 18-carat gold three-handled trophy.
Rogers praised VRC chief racing officer Leigh Jordon for the new payment structure.
'It takes a lot to get to the Cup,' Jordon said.
'Spreading it right down to the bottom gives everyone a chance in the race domestically and I think internationally it will help a little bit too … it takes a bit to fly out here and participate in the Cup.
'It's good for our grassroots participants here in Australia and New Zealand … it's the People's Cup and we want everyone to be able to run in it.'
The VRC has also officially recognised the Geelong Cup and Moonee Valley Gold Cup as 'win and you're in' Melbourne Cup qualifiers.
'Geelong Cup and Moonee Valley Gold Cup have historically delivered, naturally, Melbourne Cup starters and so we thought we would richly reward them and formalise them as part of our golden ticket program,' Rogers said.
'Now we have a $10m Melbourne Cup with 10 golden tickets leading in.'
An industry-wide collaborated and approved 'strategic reallocation' has allowed RV to maintain the overall prizemoney pool while also being able to boost select races from grassroots to elite level.
A reduction in All-Star Mile and Australian Cup prizemoney – now $2m from $2.5m last year – has boosted the Newmarket Handicap ($1.5m to $2m) and Melbourne Cup.

Closing Bell: ASX plays it cool in the face of tariff threats

ASX shrugs off tariff pessimism to climb 0.59pc Gains led by gold and banking stocks Major banks join RBA stablecoin project Gold and Banks lead ASX charge Let's see – a 50% tariff on copper, up to 200% on pharmaceuticals, and maybe more to come for semiconductors and aluminium. Just a few weeks ago, those kinds of threats from the President of the United States would have shaken markets to their core, threatening runs on bond markets and driving gold higher. These days, we're all a bit numb to it all. The ASX 200 shot up 0.59% in trade today, closing out a defiant session with 7 of 11 sectors on the up. The materials sector – and especially gold stocks – led the charge, up 1.25% with some heavy support from industrials, real estate and banking stocks. The seven major bankers added 0.81% to their index, a solid performance that was eclipsed by Aussie gold miners surging 2.27%. Commonwealth Bank (ASX:CBA) added 0.82%, Macquarie (ASX:MQG) 0.38%, NAB (ASX:NAB) 1.1%, Westpac (ASX:WBC) 0.5% and ANZ (ASX:ANZ) 0.77%. Stablecoins go mainstream Project Acacia, the federal government's tokenised asset research project, has entered a new phase as three of our major banks join the trial. A joint initiative between the RBA and the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre, the project is investigating 24 potential use cases for digital assets, engaging with a range of organisations from fintech firms to the Big 4 banks. The project is experimenting with stablecoins, bank deposit tokens, and a pilot wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC), as well as new ways of using banks' existing exchange settlement accounts at the RBA. Commonwealth Bank, Westpac and ANZ have now joined the project, supporting the RBA in understanding the potential market infrastructure improvements digital money can offer. 'Ensuring that Australia's payments and monetary arrangements are fit-for-purpose in the digital age is a strategic priority for the RBA and the Payments System Board,' RBA assistant governor Brad Jones said. 'The use cases selected in this project will help us to better understand how innovations in central bank and private digital money, alongside payments infrastructure, might help to uplift the functioning of wholesale financial markets in Australia." Yandal Resources (ASX:YRL) has unearthed a spicy 800-metre-long gold strike at the Arrakis prospect, part of the Caladan target and the greater Ironstone Well-Barwidgee gold project. Three holes drilled about 400m apart all hit gold mineralisation with similar characteristics, suggesting it may be one long gold system ripe for the plucking. Moab Minerals (ASX:MOM) is set to raise $141k in a share placement directly with European Lithium (ASX:EUR), on top of a $500k cash loan from EUR. The money – raised at 0.1 cents a share – will go to exploration at the Manyoni uranium project in Tanzania, and toward assessing and acquiring new resource project opportunities. DY6 Metals (ASX:DY6) has extended a reconnaissance drilling program at the Central rutile project in Tanzania, after neighbouring miner Peak Minerals (ASX:PUA) hit high-grade heavy mineral results of 7m at 5.1% HM right next door. Management reckons the mineralisation extends into two of DY6's own tenements, which the company will be hitting with 24 more auger holes than originally planned in a bid to unearth it. Still tossing up whether to buy that new car?

Just because the end of the financial year is over doesn't mean all the car deals are over. In fact, according to a surprising number of brands are still offering good deals. Who's cutting prices? According to a number of dealers and automakers have extended their EOFY momentum into July offering cashback and trade-in bonuses. Beyond pricing, July has kicked off with new or refreshed models including the Alfa Romeo Junior, a new entry SUV. The LDV Terron 9, a new large SUV contender. The Mahindra XUV 3XO, a compact budget SUV. The GWM Haval H6 facelifted, Mazda CX-5 and Mitsubishi Triton updates. Lastly, there are also new versions of the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S and Renault Duster. June's End of Financial Year deals were the most comprehensive in recent years. Rob Leigh, co-founder of The Beep, said there were more than 180 special offers on new vehicles last month. 'I don't think I've ever seen end of financial year sales to be more aggressive than what they are today,' Mr Leigh said. 'It feels like there are more campaigns than ever. Pretty much every brand has something in the market.' a 12 month sales high.

Scone preview: Two promising fillies lead local trainer Rod Northam's charge towards career milestones

Scone trainer Rodney Northam can edge himself closer to two professional milestones with a potential swag of winners at his home town card. Northam 's career tally of wins currently stands at 690; of which 193 have come at Scone. Northam is represented by seven runners on the program including in the opener where he restarts the respective second campaigns of the stylish and promising three-year-old fillies, Nova Centauri and Smart Buy. 'There are two nice fillies,' Northam said. 'I quite like them. 'Smart Buy was very green and very immature at her first preparation but she's had a good spell and she has come back bigger and stronger. 'She ran second in a couple of those $50,000 races. I was very pleased with her.' Mount Bona strides away for a convincing win! ðŸ'° The @Paulmessara and @LGavranich stable score a double! ✌ï¸ â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) March 21, 2025 The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! Rubick filly Nova Centauri was duly spelled after her impressive debut at Mudgee in February when coming from last on the turn to clock in second in the 1000m maiden. 'The home track will suit her a lot better,' Northam said. 'She's got a nice bit of ability as well so there is really not a lot between them. 'I wanted to split them up. I had Nova Centauri in the 1100m but they scrapped the race.' Northam's $37,500 Inglis Classic purchase Move She Can can take her earnings beyond $60,000 should she take out another race at her preferred track. 'Her run was pretty good last time and I expect her race well but it looks a strong race though,' said Northam. Ballinderry Sal, Northam's April 19 TAB Highway winner, will resume in the Scone RSL Benchmark 66 Handicap (1400m). And while her current personal best was lodged at Royal Randwick, her three other wins are all at Scone. 'I had her nominated in Newcastle, Sydney and here and I just thought when she drew well here, it would be the best option to run her at home,' Northam explained. 'She's got a got a good record at Scone so it looks quite a nice race for her to kick off in. 'Obviously she has got a bit of weight but Leeshelle (Small) will help with that. Ballinderry Sal makes it two wins in a row in the TAB Highway for @rodnortham and @djgibbons22! 🙌 @aus_turf_club â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) April 19, 2025 'I expect her to race well. She's a nice little freshen-up but I am confident she is fit enough for the 1400m.' Northam can lay claim to presenting one of the most fascinating horses racing at the track via the strikingly handsome Sipping Shamus. The unraced three-year-old is a near replica of his Cox Plate winning father Shamus Award. Better still, he boasts a 'champions pedigree' with the great Horlicks as his third dam. 'He's a good looking horse,' Northam said. 'I sort of thought he would be more a miler but he showed a good bit of speed in his trial so 1200m should be okay for him first up.' There aren't too many equines at Northam headquarters in better form than Grandini who charges in on a hat-trick when she lines-up in The Gables Benchmark 58 Handicap (1700m). 'She had been quite luckless in previous preps but she's struck a bit of luck this time in,' said Northam. 'Hopefully she has taken confidence from the wins and 1700m looks the right trip for her.' Northam's day ends with Casino Stage seemingly bound for the last crack in the last race. 'Being fresh, 1300m is probably the right distance for him. 'The track will suit. He'll just get off the speed and launch late,' said Northam. â– â– â– â– â– Local trainer Michael Gatty is well placed to lead in a treble at Moruya with a trio of horses that have a combined value of almost $1 million. Thankfully, Gatty was able to get them while they were essentially 'on-sale' and has turned each and all of them into much beloved money-spinners. 'They' being Gorush Lightning, bought by Gai Waterhouse for $540,000, as well as the Gerry Harvey-bred pair Selhurst Park (a $325,000 yearling) and the $80,000 baby, Peruno. All three acquisitions are now well and truly Moruya locals, track specialists even, with 11 home course wins between them, more than half of them belong to Gatty's cherished Gorush Lightning. 'He's our old warhorse,' Gatty said. 'I've had him since he was a late two-year-old before he had a race so we've had him on the family for a long time. Gorush Lightning just loves Moruya! Olivia Chambers with a great ride for Michael Gatty. â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) March 5, 2023 'He is older now but I can't see why he won't put in a lovely big run.' An interesting fact to excite the breeding buffs. Gorush Lightning's fourth dam is a daughter of Bernborough who stood at stud in the USA after being sold to movie producer Louis B. Mayer. A resident stallion at Three Chimneys in Kentucky, Bernborough stood alongside another famous Australian expat champion, Shannon. Gatty, meanwhile, could not have found a better race for Selhurst Park when he makes his 20th Moruya appearance. As it stands, he has finished on the podium nine times in those 19 runs including a now typical barnstorming win there as recently as June 27. 'We haven't done much with him since the other day,' Gatty explained. 'He's been over to the beach for a walk and then out the back in the bush for a bit of a stroll around and over some cavalletti's (on Thursday morning). 'That's him done and ready to go.' One Tree Inn Handicap (1650m). 'I really like the horse, I always have,' said Gatty.
