Calls to save Aberdeen Arts Centre as £660,000 needed to plug funding gap
For more than six decades, the beloved venue has been popular with dancers, actors, musicians and artists who have tread the boards at the theatre on King Street.
Home to over 35 local groups, Aberdeen Arts Centre is seeped in the rich history and culture the city has to offer.
But now it's future looks uncertain.
Eve Nicol from Aberdeen Arts Centre told STV News: 'We'll probably have to look at pulling back some of our really crucial services that people are relying on to bring that joy and breath of fresh air to their week, whether that's coming to see stuff on the stage or taking part in our weekly drama and art classes.
'If we're having to reduce the stuff that we're able to do, that's just a little light going out in people's lives and what we're really here to do is to shine a spotlight on Aberdeen's creative community.' STV News Eve Nicol from Aberdeen Arts Centre
Around £660,000 will need to be raised over the next three years – with an initial target of £180,000 by July.
The appeal has already been backed by many famous faces, such as Call the Midwife actress Laura Main.
Campaigners say the venue is vital for the next generation of performers.
Clare Haggart from Phoenix Theatre said: 'It's a very, very special place. The size of the venue is important, because it means so many local companies, dance schools, performing groups, musicians, anything like that can perform here. It's affordable but it's a lovely venue, you can sit anywhere in the auditorium and you'll have a great view of what's happening on stage.' At the heart of Aberdeen Arts Centre is the people, giving local performers and artists opportunities to learn their craft and shine on stage.
But those behind the organisation say rising costs have caused a funding gap and without urgent support, they may be forced to close their doors.
Campaigners have only a few weeks to raise thousands of pounds – but they're determined to keep the curtain up and the spotlight shining.

Celebrity Infested Waters, Rachel is seen alongside the likes of Amandaland star Lucy Punch, Call the Midwife actress Helen George and comedian Lenny Henry amongst a host of others as they jet off to the Bahamas to face their fears and confront the sea predators, all upon the 50th anniversary of the cinematic classic Jaws. And Rachel was keen to note that she would rather face the great whites than head back to the dancefloor. During an appearance on Friday's Lorraine, stand-in host Christine Lampard said "You've said you'd rather swim with sharks than do Strictly again..." and Rachel replied: "This is kind of real, it's blue sky, blue sea, nature. You know what you're getting there. Strictly is just a whole level of other stuff. I'll take great whites over Strictly, for sure." Rachel, who shares Maven, five, and Noa, three, with Pasha, admitted that she couldn't bear the thought of telling her kids what she had signed up for because she didn't want them to have nightmares. Asked about her family's reaction, she said: "Pasha was jealous. My kids, they were two and four when I was doing it. I didn't want to scare them, I didn't want them to have dreams that I was being eaten by a shark. So I didn't tell them til I got there. And by the pool where we got our training, there were these Bull sharks, these scary, mean predators." But in the end, Rachel had nothing to worry about as her children seemed to be somewhat impressed when she video-called them from location, as she explained: "So I showed them these massive beasts and they said 'Are you going swimming with them mummy?' So it made me realise that we don't have an in-built fear of sharks." And for Rachel, who shot to fame when she replaced Carol Vorderman on Channel 4's Countdown, is even enjoying getting the chance to watch it all back, although she normally can't bear to watch herself on screen. She said: "I normally can't watch anything that I've been on back, but I can't get enough of this programme. It just brings back all the memories and it was the experience of as lifetime, the stuff we got to see, being in a shark sanctuary which is the whole of the Bahamas, it was just the trip of a lifetime." Rachel added: "It's not your typical reality TV where there's gratuitous tasks, it's not [about] winning. It's about learning about sharks and I was just intrigued and excited but Lucy [Punch] hated them. "She learned to love them and we learned why they're so important to our oceans. 100 million sharks are being taken every year through fishing practices and all kinds of reasons. "We need to preserve them. It's dispelling a lot of myths that things like Jaws brought about. They're not interested in is, we're not in their diet. Five or six people die every year from shark attacks, which if you compare it to, I think 500 die from elephants and we don't have that respect to preserve them."

Thousands of artists descend on capital as Edinburgh Fringe gets under way
The 2025 Edinburgh Festival Fringe begins on Friday, bringing thousands of performances and international artists to Scotland's capital. Running until Monday, August 25, this year's programme features 54,474 performances from 3,853 shows, with 3,352 of those included in the printed guide. Since the programme launch on June 3, an additional 501 shows have registered and are now available to browse on and via the official Fringe app. Artists from 63 countries are set to appear at venues across the city, including 1,118 shows from Scotland and 829 from Edinburgh itself. The Fringe Street Events programme also got under way on Friday morning – running daily from 11am until August 24. Tony Lankester, chief executive of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, is attending his first Fringe in the role. He said: 'It's taken a lot of people a lot of work to get us to this moment, so I'd like to thank everyone who has a hand in making it happen. 'I encourage any and all prospective audience members to go out, enjoy the festival and dare to discover the amazing work on offer.' Extra rail services added ahead of sold-out Oasis concerts
ScotRail has added additional services for Oasis fans ahead of the band's three-night run of sold-out shows in Edinburgh. The train operator announced that extra carriages as well as additional late-night services will be added to routes heading to and from the capital. Thousands of fans are set to descend on the capital when brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher bring their record-breaking comeback tour to the home of Scottish Rugby on August 8, 9, and 12. Additional late-night services will operate from Edinburgh to Glasgow, Dundee, Dunblane, and Perth. Haymarket station is also expected to be much busier than normal in the afternoon and early evening, with concertgoers being encouraged to walk to the station directly if they can. Customers travelling by rail are encouraged to buy return tickets through the mTicket system on the ScotRail app, where they will become available on a mobile device and reduce the likelihood of queueing on the day of travel. Phil Campbell, ScotRail customer operations director, said: 'There's real excitement building ahead of Oasis at Murrayfield, and we're thrilled to be helping fans travel to these massive shows. 'With more trains running throughout August for the Edinburgh Festivals, and additional late-night services for the gigs themselves, the train is the best way to get to and from the concerts. 'We're encouraging everyone to plan their journey in advance, make the most of the extra services, and soak up the atmosphere of a great night in the capital.'
