Hulkenberg's podium will boost belief in Sauber, says Wheatley

TimesLIVE2 days ago
Nico Hulkenberg's breakthrough podium for Swiss-based Sauber at the British Grand Prix will boost belief in the future Audi works team, according to principal Jonathan Wheatley.
Hulkenberg, 37, finished third at Silverstone for the German's first podium finish in 239 starts, an achievement many thought would never happen for a driver who made his Formula One debut 15 years ago.
He also started last on the grid in Sunday's chaotic and rain-affected race, another element that made his success more surreal.
"What I've taken from today is people start believing in us," Wheatley told a bigger crowd of reporters than usual outside the Sauber paddock hospitality on Sunday night.
"I can say the words, I can say we're gaining momentum, I can say we're putting performance on the car, I can say (overall boss) Mattia (Binotto) and all the hard work he's been putting in before I came here is coming to light.
"It's true. We've got a very long journey towards where we need to be as a team and it's a great step when you're starting on the journey."
Sauber were last overall with only four points last season after finishing ninth out of 10 the year before, but new management has arrested a downward spiral and turned fortunes around.
Former Ferrari boss Binotto has overall charge of the project, with Wheatley joining from Red Bull to run the team at the racetrack and prepare for the transformation into Audi next season.
Sauber also have a new lineup this year of Hulkenberg and Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, last year's Formula Two champion.
This season Hulkenberg has finished fifth in Spain to lift Sauber off the bottom of the standings and he has scored in his last four races, with the team only 18 points behind fifth-placed Williams.
His points tally of 37 in 12 races is far more than the team scored in the last two seasons combined.
Asked whether Sauber were further ahead than expected in their plan for the future, Wheatley refused to tempt fate.
"You can think of the plan as a straight line and there's some hairpins on the way and there's some stoplights and traffic works," he said.

Red Bull sack F1 team chief Horner

Christian Horner was Wednesday sacked by Red Bull after 20 years as team principal of the Formula One outfit. The 51-year-old has been in charge since the team was formed in 2005 and led them to eight drivers' titles and six constructors' crowns. Dutchman Max Verstappen has won the past four drivers' titles for Red Bull, matching the achievement of Sebastian Vettel, who dominated for the team from 2010 to 2013. Horner's dismissal as CEO and team principal comes 17 months after he was accused by a female colleague of " inappropriate behaviour". The Englishman was twice cleared over the claims by the Formula One team's parent company, Red Bull GmbH, and his wife, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, stood by him. But there have been rumblings of discontent within the team, with several high-profile departures, while form on the track has nose-dived. "Red Bull has released Christian Horner from his operational duties with effect from today (Wednesday) and has appointed Laurent Mekies as CEO of Red Bull Racing," said a statement from Red Bull GmbH. Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of corporate projects and investments, paid tribute to Horner, thanking him for his "exceptional work". "With his tireless commitment, experience, expertise and innovative thinking, he has been instrumental in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful and attractive teams in Formula 1," he said. "Thank you for everything, Christian, and you will forever remain an important part of our team history." - 'Difficult to drive' - Horner's departure comes amid speculation that Verstappen may be tempted to jump ship to Mercedes. Although the 27-year-old Dutchman won the title last year, he only topped the podium twice in the final 14 races of the season. Red Bull have won only two races this season, with McLaren taking their place as the team to beat. Verstappen is languishing 69 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri at the halfway point of the campaign and finished a disappointing fifth at Sunday's British Grand Prix, having started on pole. He showed frustration with his Red Bull during the race, saying: "This car is just so difficult to drive." Other key figures responsible for the team's previous dominance have left since last year including design guru Adrian Newey, who signed for Aston Martin, and Sporting director Jonathan Wheatley, who joined Sauber. Max Verstappen's father Jos, a former F1 driver, had expressed his dissatisfaction with Horner even after he was cleared of the charges of inappropriate behaviour. He warned the team was in danger of being "torn apart" if Horner remained. Mekies, who has been promoted from Red Bull's second team, Racing Bulls, has had a long career in Formula One, previously working as racing director for Ferrari. "The last year and a half has been an absolute privilege to lead the team with Peter (Bayer)," the 48-year-old Frenchman said in a statement. "It has been an amazing adventure to contribute to the birth of Racing Bulls together with all our talented people.

Red Bull replace long‑time team principal Christian Horner with Laurent Mekies

Red Bull won eight Drivers' World Championships and six Constructors' Championships under Horner, but struggled this season with the team sitting fourth with 172 points in the constructors' standings. They trail leaders McLaren by 288 points. Red Bull's four-time Formula One champion Max Verstappen has won two of 12 races and is third in the drivers' championship. Horner's position was questioned, with Verstappen's father calling last year for him to go after allegations of misconduct were made by a female employee. The Briton denied them and was cleared after an investigation. 'It has been an amazing adventure to contribute to the birth of Racing Bulls with all our talented people. The spirit of the team is incredible and I believe this is just the beginning,' Mekies said. 'Alan is the perfect man to take over now and continue our path. He knows the team inside out and has always been an important pillar of our early successes.'

Orlando Pirates transfers: Nine in and several out

Orlando Pirates have wasted no time revamping their squad, confirming nine signings already this transfer window. New recruits such as Oswin Appollis, Sipho Mbule, and Sinoxolo Kwayiba headline an aggressive strategy that has now turned towards trimming the squad. With the team now overloaded, the Bucs have started finalising loan moves and permanent exits for players who no longer fit into the new head coach's plans. Goodman Mosele, who only featured seven times last season after returning from a loan at Chippa United, looks set for another stint with the Gqeberha-based club. Reports suggest the two clubs are closing in on an agreement that would see the midfielder return to the Chilli Boys. Midfielder Azola Tshobeni also appears to be on his way out, temporarily. He made just three appearances last season and didn't start a single match. His absence from the squad that travelled to Spain for pre-season training hints strongly at an impending loan deal. In contrast to the loan exits, Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo has left the club permanently. His contract expired on 30 June, and Pirates have yet to announce a renewal. The 30-year-old departs after 65 appearances and four trophies, closing the chapter on a successful stint with the Soweto giants. With more changes expected, Pirates are also searching for a new striker. Insiders indicate that at least one forward currently on the club's books will make way to accommodate the incoming frontman. Are all the Orlando Pirates changes necessary given how successful they have been under Jose Riveiro previously? Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
