South African president suspends police minister and launches probe into alleged links to criminals
Ramaphosa's actions follow allegations made by a top police official in the KwaZulu-Natal province, Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, that Senzo Mchunu and deputy police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya had interfered with sensitive investigations.
Ramaphosa said the probe will be headed by a judge, and announced Firoz Cachalia as the acting minister of police.
'The commission will investigate the role of current or former senior officials in certain institutions who may have aided or abetted the alleged criminal activity, failed to act on credible intelligence or internal warnings, or benefited financially or politically from a syndicate's operations,' Ramaphosa said during a televised address Sunday.
During a press briefing last Sunday, Mkhwanazi also alleged that Mchunu and Sibiya disbanded a crucial crime unit tasked with investigating repeated politically motivated killings in the province after it was revealed that crime syndicates were behind the killings.
He alleged that an investigation by the unit showed that some 'politicians, law enforcement, SAPS (South African Police Service), metro police and correctional services, prosecutors, judiciary' were being 'controlled by drug cartels and as well as businesspeople.'
The investigation would include some of the country's crime and justice agencies, including the National Prosecuting Authority and the State Security Agency, Ramaphosa said.
Most opposition parties on Sunday criticized Ramaphosa for not firing Mchunu instead of placing him on a leave of absence.
'This was an opportunity to take South Africans into confidence and to deal with these issues decisively, instead he calls for a commission of inquiry and expects South Africans to be patient when people are dying on a daily basis,' said Nhlamulo Ndhlela, spokesperson of official opposition MK Party.

Doctor rushed to hospital after her toyboy lover 'was fatally-stabbed at behest of her furious husband' - but she wasn't there to help him
A doctor under investigation for the murder of her lover was instructed by her husband to delete a video that captured the attack, Brazilian authorities have revealed. Ivan Bonotto, 35, was stabbed March 22 at a bar in Sorriso, Mato Grosso that is owned by the gynecologist's partner before he died after going into cardiac arrest on April 13. Bonotto was rushed to Sorriso Regional Hospital, where Dr. Sabrina de Mello arrived four minutes after he was admitted, according to the Mato Grosso Civil Police. Dr. de Mello, a mother-of-two, was dressed in scrubs and told security that she was there to visit Bonotto, whom she described as a friend. The physician was seen on video walking behind the hospital staff as they hurried him to the operating room and deleting text messages and the footage of the fight that Bonotto recorded on his cell phone. Dr. de Mello told investigators that she erased the messages and video because she was looking to 'protect the victim.' On Tuesday, authorities arrested Dr. de Mello, on charges of procedural fraud and obstruction of justice. Tacca was taken into custody for masterminding the attack while his friend, local businessman Danilo Guimarães, was arrested for killing Bonotto. Bonotto was a good friend of Tacca and often stayed at the family residence. A selfie taken by Dr. de Mello showed Bonotto drinking a beer and a smiling Tacca in the background. 'Thanks for the visit,' the doctor's caption read. Two other captions read: 'They go, I don't' and 'Excellent company.' Another photo taken by the gynecologist showed her, Bonotto and Tacca at a pool. Surveillance video footage showed Bonotto visiting the home March 9 and kissing the doctor in the garage. They spent some time inside the residence before they walked out and kissed again. After learning that one of his closest friends and his wife were romantically involved, Tacca lured Bonotto to his bar, where he and Guimarães faked the scene of a fight, which Bonotto is said to have captured on video. At one point, Guimarães attacked Bonotto and stabbed him multiple times. Tacca presented himself at a police station and told investigators that he did not know Bonotto and that the brawl was sparked by drinking at the bar. Guimarães indicated that he was involved in the fight, but that he stabbed Bonotto to protect himself. Mato Grosso Civil Police chief Bruno Brança said they discovered that Tacca and Guimarães remained at the bar and spoked for 'one minute and 42 seconds.' 'After the person [Guimarães] left, the bar owner waited another 11 minutes, with the victim in critical condition, to take him to the hospital,' he said. 'The claim that he had called the police and fire department is false. There was no connection in the records.' 'What we know is that the story about a bar fight is a lie,' Brança added. Barcelona agree sponsorship deal with DR Congo to promote tourism
KINSHASA, July 17 (Reuters) - Democratic Republic of Congo has agreed to pay more than 40 million euros ($46.37 million) in a sponsorship deal with Spanish soccer club Barcelona that would see a logo promoting tourism appear on some team apparel, according to a contract seen on Thursday by Reuters. The contract with Barcelona is dated June 29 and stipulates that a logo branding the war-hit Central African country as the "heart of Africa" will appear on the backs of training and warm-up jerseys for the men's and women's teams. The logo will also appear in advertising for the club and in the club magazine and annual report, the contract says. Congo will pay the club between 10 million and 11.5 million euros annually over the next four seasons, it says. Details of the deal between Congo and Barcelona have not been announced. AS Monaco and AC Milan last month also announced sponsorship deals with Congo without disclosing the amounts. Congolese sports minister Didier Budimbu told Reuters the contract with AS Monaco is worth 1.6 million euros per season. He did not disclose the amounts for the contracts with AC Milan and Barcelona. A Congolese government source said the contract with AC Milan was worth 14 million euros per season. Announcing the AC Milan deal on June 20, Congolese tourism minister Didier M'Pambia said it was part of a government strategy "to reposition the DRC on the international stage as an undisputed leader on the African continent" by promoting tourism and investment opportunities.
