KUCHING: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) aims to elevate its healthcare services to a higher level through a proposal to establish a Mara Hospital to strengthen Bumiputera participation in the medical sector and professional entrepreneurship.
Its chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said this initiative is a continuation of the success of Mara-operated clinic networks such as UNI Clinic, UNI Dental and UNI Pharmacy, which now number 140 branches nationwide.
"We already have clinics. Why not, one day, have a Mara Hospital as well," he said during the launch of UNI Klinik Metrocity here today.
He said Mara has an advantage through a comprehensive ecosystem that includes education, such as the UniKL Royal College of Medicine Perak in Ipoh, which offers medical and pharmacy courses, as well as student financing programmes both domestically and abroad.
Asyraf Wajdi said Mara intends to unite all layers of students, alumni, entrepreneurs and investors into a strategic ecosystem called 'Mara Ecosystem 2.0'.
"It is time to gather all those who have benefited from Mara into an extensive network of Bumiputera entrepreneurs and investors.
"The achievements of Bumiputera should be measured through the 3P Agenda, namely, participation by ensuring more Bumiputera are involved in strategic sectors.
"Secondly, ownership, by increasing Bumiputera ownership of assets, companies and businesses and thirdly, dominance, by establishing Bumiputera as dominant players in high-value economic sectors such as healthcare and technology.
"We cannot just be proud of how many doctors we produce.
"We must measure how many doctors can become entrepreneurs, and subsequently manufacturers and suppliers," Asyraf Wajdi said.
He said Mara must operate as a large conglomerate with full coordination across education, entrepreneurship and investment.

Envoy: UK opens doors to more Malaysian students amid US policy shift
KUALA LUMPUR — The United Kingdom (UK) is widening its doors to Malaysian students by expanding its university footprint and tailoring academic opportunities to meet their evolving needs. British High Commissioner to Malaysia Ajay Sharma said the UK is ready to welcome more Malaysian students amid shifting global study trends, as the United States (US) tightens its visa policies. 'We want to have more Malaysian students in the UK. We want to have more UK universities here in Malaysia. 'We want to make sure that the educational links get stronger and stronger, but most importantly, that they respond to the needs of people here,' he told Bernama after appearing on Bernama TV's programme The Diplomatic Dispatch here on Thursday. Sharma said that the UK, known for its academic excellence and globally recognised qualifications, remains an attractive destination for higher education and is ready to accommodate students who may be reconsidering the US or other countries due to recent developments. 'We're very happy to welcome more Malaysian students if they choose to come because of what's happening in the US or elsewhere in the world,' he said. According to data from the UK Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) for the 2023/24 academic year, a total of 12,760 Malaysian students were enrolled in UK higher education institutions, placing Malaysia among the top ten non-EU source countries. Recalling his recent discussion with Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, Sharma disclosed that they were exploring deeper collaboration and facilitating greater access for Malaysian students to UK institutions. 'We talked about how we can cooperate more on ensuring that Malaysian students are able to take advantage of the opportunities in the UK,' he said. MARA has temporarily suspended the placement of its sponsored students to the US this year following recent changes to student visa policies introduced by the US administration. Asyraf Wajdi said the agency is offering alternative placements in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China and local institutions to ensure students are not affected by the policy shift. The move follows recent directives by US President Donald Trump's administration to tighten international student visa procedures. — BERNAMA

Oxford Innotech opens IPO applications at 29 sen to raise RM41.6mil
KUALA LUMPUR: Oxford Innotech Bhd has opened applications for its initial public offering (IPO) on the ACE Market at an issue price of 29 sen per share, aiming to raise RM41.6 million. The IPO comprises 143.5 million new shares, representing 20.2 per cent of the integrated engineering solutions provider's enlarged share capital, along with an offer for sale of 50 million existing shares. Based on the IPO price, the Penang-based firm is expected to attain a market capitalisation of RM205.9 million upon listing. Proceeds from the IPO will fund the company's expansion plans, including the construction of a new 67,722-square-foot (sq ft) manufacturing facility slated for completion in 2027. Managing director Ng Thean Gin said the company is also preparing to add 39,392 sq ft of new capacity by the third quarter of 2025 to meet near-term demand. "With these two additional facilities, our total manufacturing area will increase by 124.9 per cent to 192,896 sq ft," Ng said in a statement. Of the total proceeds, RM23.1 million or 55.5 per cent will go towards factory construction, RM11.2 million (26.9 per cent) for the purchase and refinancing of machinery, while the remainder will be allocated to working capital and listing expenses. The new shares include 35.5 million units for application by the Malaysian public, 27 million for eligible directors, employees and contributors to the group, and 81 million to be placed out to selected Bumiputera investors approved by the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry. The offer for sale also includes a private placement of 50 million existing shares — 7.8 million to ministry-approved Bumiputera investors, with the balance to selected investors. For the financial year ended Dec 31, 2024, Oxford Innotech's revenue jumped 87.6 per cent year-on-year to RM92.9 million, while profit after tax surged 93.7 per cent to RM15.6 million. The growth was driven primarily by its precision engineering segment, which contributed 48.2 per cent of total revenue. Applications for the public issue are open from today and will close on July 16 at 5pm. The company is scheduled to list on July 29.
