Port champion Boak hangs up boots shy of 400-game milestone

The Australian21 hours ago
Port Adelaide veteran Travis Boak won't join the rare 400-game club after opting to retire as his club's games record holder at the end of the season following an elite career.
Boak, 37, has racked up a mammoth 384 games but has called time with the prospect of joining the 400 club not enough to keep him going on for another year.
The three-time All Australian, two-time club best and fairest winner and Port's longest-serving captain sits seventh on the all-time VFL/AFL list for matches played.
He broke Port Adelaide legend Russell Ebert's club games record, which were all played in the SANFL, earlier this year.
'After 19 years at AFL level, it feels like now is the right time to finish my career,' Boak said.
'I'm incredibly grateful to have had the career I've had and at a club I truly love. Being a one-club player is really special to me, and it's certainly not lost on me how lucky I have been.

'I have played alongside some of the greatest footballers, and people, I could have hoped to meet. From Robbie Gray to Ollie Wines, Sam Powell-Pepper, to the new generation in Connor Rozee, Zak Butters and Jason Horne-Francis, it's been an incredible ride.
'Thank you to the club, to my family, my teammates and my coaches for the memories over the years. The highs and lows are what makes footy exciting, and those moments are what connect a group in a significant and authentic way.
'More than football, I hope to be remembered as someone who always carried myself in the right way and gave people my time. A human being first and an athlete second.
'The Port Adelaide fans are loud, passionate, and supportive. They demand success. And while I haven't been able to help deliver them an elusive second AFL premiership, I can't wait to sit back and watch on as this club does that for them.
'I'll forever be a Port Adelaide person, and I'll forever be grateful for this part of my life.'
Port coach Ken Hinkley said Boak was 'a person and leader who embodies everything Port Adelaide stands for'.
'He's someone who is selfless, caring, courageous and never satisfied,' Hinkley said.
'Coaching Travis has been one of the great privileges of my career. He's taught me as much as I've taught him. Watching him grow from player to captain to a modern-day club legend has been a privilege, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of that journey.'

Melbourne star Langdon 'shocked' by Simon Goodwin's sudden axing

Premiership winning Melbourne winger Ed Langdon says he's not sure the players needed a 'new voice' as they continue to come to terms with the axing of Simon Goodwin. Players were informed of their coach's dismissal via a Zoom call early on Tuesday morning. The 2021 premiership coach was axed late on Monday night after 11 years at the helm and a most recent win as large as 83 points. The news of Goodwin's departure broke on Tuesday morning, with some Demons finding out through the media ahead of being told by the club. Langdon, who will play his 200th game this Sunday against Western Bulldogs, was one of the senior players who was informed in a video call. 'It was obviously a big day yesterday, we were told in the morning in a Zoom call. We managed to get around to most of the other players as well before that dropped,' he said. 'It was a big emotional day, of course (it felt different on Wednesday morning), we've got a different coach coaching this week and we all loved Goody, he was a big part of the club. '(I was) definitely shocked, it's not the news I thought I would be waking up to. As I said, we are all very close to Goody, won a premiership with him.' Ed Langdon was shocked by Simon Goodwin's axing. Picture: Michael Klein Langdon has played 131 games for the Demons, all under the guidance of Goodwin, since crossing from Fremantle. In announcing Goodwin's departure, Demons interim president Brad Green said the club needed a 'new voice' to take the club forward, which wasn't the overriding feeling among the players, including Langdon. 'I'm not sure I would agree with that, but that's the board's decision,' Langdon said. 'I can only comment on the players' relationship with Goody, which was always positive. We always respected him and loved him as a coach. 'If that's what the board thinks, then that's what the board thinks. 'All I'll touch on is how much I love Goody and how much respect I have for him. 'He's been pretty influential in my career. I've only got good things to say about Goody and what he achieved and what he did for this football club.' Goodwin had just coached his team to an 83-point win when he received the news. Picture: David Geraghty With premiership-winning coaches including John Longmire and Adam Simpson linked to the job, Langdon was reluctant to talk about who could be a good fit. Former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said on Wednesday he'd take a call if Melbourne approached him. Long-serving assistant coach Troy Chaplin will steer the Demons for their final three games of the 2025 season. 'The board is going to go through that process (of finding a new coach), the next three weeks we've got Troy Chaplin, he's been around for a long time, he's an experienced assistant coach,' Langdon said. '(Chaplin is) again pretty close to the players, so looking forward to the next three weeks and what we can achieve.'

Dockers champion to take over as Sydney Swans boss

Former Fremantle champion Matthew Pavlich has been confirmed as Tom Harley's successor as Sydney Swans chief executive. Pavlich will take over at the end of this season, when Harley departs to take the role of AFL chief operating officer. An Australian Football Hall of Fame member, Pavlich played 353 games and kicked 700 goals for the Dockers over a career spanning 17 seasons. The 43-year-old, who retired in 2016, has since embarked on a successful media career as a commentator and news reader. Pavlich will relocate to Sydney from Perth with his wife and their three children. "The Sydney Swans is a highly successful, well respected and well managed football club," Pavlich said. "It is a big decision to uproot the family and bring them across the country to Sydney, but I am thrilled to be offered the opportunity to lead this great and highly professional club. "I'm looking forward to working with the clubs leaders and playing groups to continue the success of this iconic club over the coming years." He had previously been linked to the role of AFL Players Association chief executive, after Paul Marsh departed in May. Pavlich had served as AFLPA president during his playing days. Swans chairman Andrew Pridham was "delighted" to appoint Pavlich as chief executive, lauding his wealth of football experience as a player and administrator. "Together with his business pursuits in the sports and entertainment industry, Matthew has stayed involved in the game since his retirement from playing in 2016 and is widely respected across the industry," Pridham said. "We believe he will fit in well with the Sydney Swans culture and bring his own unique insights and perspectives that will benefit the club moving forward."

NRL Market Watch: Josh Kerr to leave Dolphins and rejoin the Dragons

Queensland Origin squad member Josh Kerr is on the verge of returning to St George Illawarra from next season as the club prepares to announce his return on a two-year deal. Kerr is expected to take up an offer until the end of 2027 to return to St George Illawarra after the Dolphins were unable to retain him beyond this season. Interestingly, the Dragons released Kerr midway through the 2023 season with 18 months remaining on his contract to join the Dolphins. That was before Shane Flanagan arrived at the club with Kerr let go just after Anthony Griffin was sacked at the Dragons. Since joining the Dolphins, Kerr has played 43 top grade games including 16 this year. He made his debut for St George Illawarra in 2019 and went on to play 68 top grade games for the club before his departure. His form has been so good for the Dolphins this year he was included in the extended squad by coach Billy Slater for game three of this year's series. However, his celebrations of the Maroons' series win were soured when he was hit with a $10,000 fine following comments he made about referee Ashley Klein the morning after Queensland's victory. Kerr was targeted by Super League clubs and it is understood he weighed up a move to England before opting to remain in the NRL and rejoin St George Illawarra. He will add experience to a forward pack which is filled with rising stars. Kerr joins Cronulla's Daniel Atkinson in joining the Dragons from next year. They have lost Jack de Belin (Eels), Jonah Glover (Rabbitohs) and Sione Finau (Canberra). St George Illawarra also have a two year offer on the table to in-form Tigers player Adam Doueihi. The Dragons were believed to be in the box seat to sign Doueihi after the Tigers only offered a 12-month deal but they have since upped their offer to two seasons following his starring role for the club in their win over the high-flying Bulldogs on Sunday. Kerr is the latest addition to the Dragons squad as they begin to reshape the side to put themselves in contention to return to the finals next season. It is understood the club would consider allowing wingers Mikaele Ravalawa and Tyrell Sloan out of their deals should they find other options while Blake Lawrie is also be free to go. Ravalawa, currently at Souths on loan for this season, and Lawrie have 12 months lefts on their deals while Sloan has another two years. NRL While legend Benny Elias called it 'ugly hatred', the NRL's slap on the wrist for the Tigers players who insulted Bulldogs fans on the weekend is just right, writes Brent Read. NRL West Tigers centre Brent Naden has been hit with a breach notice after the NRL's investigation into his 'khawd' celebration against the Bulldogs, with a trio of other stars officially warned.
