Southwest Airlines to end free checked bags. What it means for RI T.F. Green travelers
The airline announced Tuesday that some customers enrolled in its rewards program or those with preferred status will continue to receive either one or two free checked bags beginning in May. All other passengers will have to pay for their first and second checked bags.
The move, which Southwest said is part of a broader strategy to cater to its most loyal customers, comes after the airline announced last year that it would be ending its open seating policy.
Southwest Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and Business Select fare passengers will continue to receive two free checked bags under its new policy.
Some other customers, including A-List Members, will receive one free checked bag, and Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers will receive a credit for one checked bag.
All other travelers will have to pay for their first and second checked bags, with weight and size restrictions still in place.
The new policy will begin with flights booked on or after May 28, so anyone traveling within the next two months won't have to worry about paying for checked bags.
Southwest offers service across New England, with flights out of Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport, as well as airports in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut.
Most airlines that travel out of T.F. Green — including Delta, JetBlue and American — require travelers to pay to check bags depending on the trip or fare.

Quoted home insurance premiums fall amid increasing competition, study finds
Average quoted home insurance prices are falling as competition across the market rises, according to an index. Quoted premiums have typically fallen by 7.9% over the past year and by 3.9% over the past quarter, insurance market insights provider Consumer Intelligence said. Premiums were most commonly quoted between £150 and £199, with 29% of quotes falling within that range, according to Consumer Intelligence's data. In June, 62.5% of consumers could potentially source quotes for less than £200, compared with 56% a year ago, its study indicated. Laura Vas, senior insight analyst at Consumer Intelligence said: 'There is a greater array of choice for consumers – 75% of the best prices in the market came from nine brands in June 2025, up from six in the previous year.' Quoted premiums for under-50s households have typically fallen by 8.4% in the past 12 months, slightly ahead of a 7.3% drop for the over-50s, the report found. Looking at property types, quoted premiums for properties of all ages have typically fallen over the past year, with the biggest decreases at 9.5% for homes built between 1925 and 1940 and for those built between 1985 and 2000, it added. The research involved calculating changes in the averages of the five cheapest premiums on price comparison websites. Southwest Airlines Breaks Silence After Halting All Departing Flights
On Thursday, July 31 a number of different airlines were forced to make cancellations and delay flights due to serious weather conditions. While Southwest Airlines was among those in distress, the airline suffered an extra problem when it was forced to halt all departures. What Happened to Southwest Airlines Flights? Southwest Airlines revealed it suffered a communications issue that led to all departing flights being halted. "Southwest Airlines temporarily paused departures this afternoon due to a brief outage that affected network connectivity to our dispatching and operations system. The system has been restored and departures have resumed. We apologize to our Customers for any inconvenience. Nothing is more important to Southwest than the Safety of our Customers and Employees," Southwest said in a statement on July 31. Did Passengers Know About the Delays? Not exactly. While passengers were informed of the delay, Southwest's departure boards didn't accurately reflect the delays or cancellations from the day. Instead, boards showed both the original and revised departure times, leading to a new statement from airline spokesperson Lynn Lunford amid the traveler confusion. 'We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience. Our primary focus is ensuring the safety and satisfaction of our guests, and we will continue to work diligently to minimize the impact of these disruptions," she said at the time. While Southwest Airlines found a remedy to the situation around 2 p.m. ET, the interruption caused delays of two hours or more for many passengers as 40 percent of its flights were delayed. In addition, a full 2 percent of Southwest's flights from July 31 were canceled due to severe weather conditions in the Northeast. 'Oldest' pasty maker in the world donates more than £10k to good causes
A bakery has given more than £10,000 to good causes over the past two years. Warrens Bakery, believed to be the oldest pasty maker in the world, has supported charities, community groups and sports clubs through donations and fundraising. The Cornish bakery, which has more than 47 shops across the South West, said the contributions reflect its long-standing commitment to the communities it serves. Louise Batty, marketing manager at Warrens Bakery, said: "As a business that's very much rooted in the West Country, Warrens Bakery is committed to supporting local fundraising, charities and sporting initiatives in the region, and look forward to continuing to help these inspirational people and organisations where we can." These two campaigns have raised more than £4,000 in the past two years. Festive giving also features in the bakery's efforts, with sales of its Christmas pasty raising more than £2,000 for Wooden Spoon, the children's charity of rugby. Warrens Bakery's support extends beyond financial donations. The company regularly donates pasties to Dive Project Cornwall for students on its marine education programme, and to Children's Hospice South West for fundraising events. Other donations have included scones to hedgehog charity Prickles and Paws and doughnuts to the Plymouth Blood Donor Centre. The bakery has also raised more than £600 for Purple Angel, a dementia support charity. Through this partnership, all Warrens Bakery shops have become dementia-aware. Warrens has also supported regional rugby, football and cricket clubs, as well as events including the Dart Music Festival and the St Just Lafrowda Festival.
