Practising ‘relationship skills' – and other ‘bomb-drop' advice for desperate parents

The child is mine. And I am out of my depth.
Just as she is about to throw the toy van, I leap forward and grab it from her hands. She races back to her room to find another missile. We perform this dance three times – 'I won't let you throw,' I say – before she changes tack and heads to the kitchen, where she takes a pair of scissors from the drawer, sits down on the floor and inserts a finger defiantly ­between the open blades.
My brain scans the various parenting tips I've been consuming lately on social media: All feelings are welcome, all behaviours are not; Punishment is ineffective for improving behaviour; They can't regulate their emotions, but you can regulate yours; This is not a bad kid, this is a good kid having a hard time; I can cope with this.
Only I'm not sure I can. And I truly don't know how to handle it.
In the olden days – when you and I were growing up – the advice was simple. We'd have grabbed that bloody campervan from her hands, said a few choice words, perhaps even thrown it in the bin, and sent her to her room to think about what she'd done.
Sadly, for anyone fluent in this approach, it is ineffective at raising a well-regulated, emotionally intelligent human. Rather, the so‑called 'behaviourist approach' is associated with a lack of independence, low self-esteem and aggression, says Dr Billy Garvey, a Melbourne-based developmental paediatrician and author of Ten Things I Wish You Knew About Your Child's Mental Health.
As research into childhood development has grown, behaviourism has given way to the boundary-less, permissive-parenting approach. Applying this approach might mean we'd have taken the hit from the campervan missile and then comforted the distressed child who threw it at us. The permissive approach (which Garvey says people often misconstrue as being the same as 'gentle' parenting) is also ­ineffective and can increase hostility towards authority figures, lower empathy and stoke peer conflict.

Today, the advice is not so simple. A new breed of parenting educators has taken over the internet and is changing the way the next generation of kids is being raised. The wildly swinging parenting pendulum has settled on a muddier middle. It focuses more on the ­parent's feelings than the child's, and would neither punish my daughter nor let her throw the campervan at her sister's (or my) head.
So what on earth is one to do? I take heart from the fact that many of these new parenting educators are also stuck in the muddiness of it all and that they, too, have questioned the sanity of their child as well as the sanctity of their parenting.
The bomb drops
On the day that I arrive at Genevieve Muir's bungalow-style home in a leafy suburb of Sydney's lower north shore, she's forgotten I'm coming. There is a pile of laundry on the dining table and, though her hair is still immaculate from a morning television appearance, the mum of four boys, aged between eight and 15, appears frazzled.
Once we've settled into the comfortable navy lounges with a pot of green tea, and with her groodle Poppy nuzzling me (or the baklava in my hand), the 46-year-old social worker tells me about her low point as a parent. At the end of one particularly long and hot day, she had finally got her three-month-old son, who had reflux, to sleep. Just as Muir was about to leave the nursery, her two-year-old son exploded into the room, roaring like a lion, and started shaking the bassinet. Muir, then in her early 30s, was apoplectic. 'I thought, 'What is wrong with my child?' '
She did what any self-respecting, behaviourist-reared person would do: she yelled at her son, shamed him for waking his baby brother and punished him. Of course, her two-year-old kept behaving like a two-year-old, hitting, pushing, biting and melting down, while her newborn with reflux kept crying. 'When they cried and cried and nothing would fix it, like toddlers can, that felt like nails down a chalkboard,' says Muir, the author of Little People, Big Feelings.
Several months later, she found herself ­sitting in her local community health centre crying about how awful her children were. When the nurse gently suggested she try a course on parenting, Muir felt deeply offended. 'I was like, 'Does she not know who I am? I'm a social worker, I'm the daughter of a therapist, I do not need a parenting course. My problem is the children.' '
It's difficult to be a regulated, calm parent all the time. 'We all have crappy days when we want to flip the bird.'
Yet desperation makes us do strange things. She did the course and felt a 'bomb drop'. The bomb was learning that certain emotions trigger us, likely because when we were children those emotions were rejected, or were the cause of punishment from caregivers. Now, as parents ourselves, those same emotions in our children elicit a visceral response in us. The instinct when they are upset, whinge, act out or disobey is to yell, smack, shame or send them to their rooms as we were sent to ours. 'When a child has a meltdown, we're telling parents to sit alongside them, but they've never had that modelled to them,' Muir says.
For the first time, Muir felt self-compassion and understood her own reactions. It was a skill that would later inform the parenting classes she runs at Sydney's Mater Hospital, her book, and the clips she posts to her 67,000 followers on Instagram. [Muir also has 70,000 followers on TikTok and 16,000 on Facebook.]
'Sometimes the bigger problems with our children is our stuff, not their stuff,' says Maggie Dent, author of Mothering Our Boys and Muir's friend and mentor. It's difficult to be a regulated, calm parent all the time, adds Dent, who has a following of 191,000 on Instagram. 'We all have crappy days when we want to flip the bird. [We should just] aim to be a good-enough parent.'
What being a 'good-enough' parent means in practice is having compassion for ourselves when the kids and home life in general are starting to feel a bit overwhelming. It also means having empathy for our kids. I have at times wondered how I can expect them to have their emotional shit together when their 44-year-old mother doesn't always have hers. And it means learning to hold the boundary, without being an arsehole. At least, most of the time.
When I talk to Professor Sophie Havighurst, a parenting researcher at Melbourne University, she says something that sticks with me. These practices – boundaries, self-compassion, empathy, warmth – are not just parenting skills, they are relationship skills. It's obvious, but it strikes me because I've always thought of parenting as an instinct, or as an in-built capacity that we either have or do not have, not a relationship skill or a skill we must learn and practise.
'No wonder we feel like shit when it's hard,' says Dr Becky, a child psychologist with more than 3.5 million followers on social media, in a recent clip on Instagram. 'The only thing that comes naturally in parenting is how you were parented. It's like being raised in English and wanting to teach your kid Mandarin and to speak to them in Mandarin. I don't think anyone would think Mandarin is going to come naturally. You're going to have to learn it and practise it and in your hardest, stressful moments, you would speak English. That doesn't mean the Mandarin is not working.'
The demand for the advice of the Dr Beckys, Muirs, Dents and Garveys of the world, as well a range of unqualified parenting educators, is high. In the past five years, the online parenting market has become a multibillion-dollar business. On Instagram alone, the hashtag #parenting appears more than 23 million times, while #parentingtips is tagged more than 4.6 million times.
In this unregulated space, much content is designed to get clicks and ad revenue by preying on parents' insecurities and fears they are not doing enough, let alone doing anything right. At its worst, it creates pressure, shame, confusion and the sense that everybody else is doing a better job ('They're bloody not,' says Dent, god love her), and can steer us in the wrong direction, making us dismiss our better instincts. Some of the advice is also 'potentially harmful', says Garvey, a father of two who has more than 50,000 followers on social media; for instance, the message to new mums to 'just relax' and enjoy being with their baby, when up to 30 per cent have postnatal depression.
'Other messaging says, 'for a certain price, I'll show you how to make a baby sleep,' ' Garvey tells me. 'So many new parents are desperate and when they pay and try that method but it doesn't work, they think that they're the ones who are failing – not the program that was developed by someone without developmental training and who just saw a financial opportunity.'
But there is also advice that can provide much-needed perspective and a guide to a deeper, more enjoyable connection with our children. Muir suspects this desire is driving the demand for social media parenting: we know we want to do it differently, but we don't yet know how to do it differently.
Regulating emotions
I never thought I'd say this, but this new generation of parenting educators on social media has helped me. The scraps of advice they provide have become mantras to approach parenting in a way that feels kinder (to myself and to my daughters) and more accepting of the mess.
It doesn't prevent the rise of frustration and the instinct to threaten punishments when they turn into deranged, fire-breathing dragons because I've brought them the wrong snack. And it doesn't mean I now know how to perfectly navigate missile or scissor stand-offs. But I can practise a little self-compassion to regulate my own emotions in the moment and appreciate that it is hard for anyone to know what to do sometimes.

So, I steady my breath and sit down next to my daughter. 'Let me take these,' I say, removing the scissors. 'Can I give you a hug?' She looks at me and crumples into my arms. I don't know if I've responded in the right way.
Two minutes later, she hops up and walks over to her sister as though nothing happened. 'Wanna play?'

A major land and sea search is underway after a light plane went missing. The aircraft, carrying a pilot and one passenger, took off from George Town Airport in Tasmania about 12.45pm on Saturday, bound for regional Victoria and then Central Western NSW. It failed to arrive as scheduled, prompting concerned family members of the two Tasmanian residents to raise the alarm. A search operation involving aircraft, helicopters and marine resources was activated. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is co-ordinating the operation, with Tasmania Police helicopter and vessel resources searching the coastline near George Town and Tasmania's north. AMSA's Melbourne-based rescue jet is conducting overwater searches of Bass Strait, supported by vessels including Victoria Police. Residents in northern Tasmania are advised there will be ongoing aerial activity in the area on Sunday.

Sitting in her Melbourne lounge room, Tetsuko 'Tess' McKenzie flips through faded photographs with her family. But one image has never left her mind — the blinding flash of 6 August 1945 when she witnessed the world's first nuclear bomb strike the Japanese city of Hiroshima. "I was standing on a railway platform when suddenly a strong white light flashed into my eyes," the 96-year-old told SBS News. "And I turned to my friend and asked her, 'What is that?'" "The next thing we heard was a tremendous noise, and then, in a gap between the hills, we saw white smoke rising. Gradually, it formed into a mushroom shape." Source: SBS / Scott Cardwell McKenzie was a teenager when she witnessed the devastating moment the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. It was nearly eight decades ago but memories of the event are forever etched into her mind. The 16-year-old was on the way to the city to watch a movie with a friend. By an extraordinary twist of fate, they missed their train — a narrow escape that to this day she gives thanks for. "Oh yes, if we had caught that scheduled train, we would have been right in Hiroshima when the bomb fell," she said. Nicknamed 'Little Boy', the atomic bomb caused widespread destruction and was a major factor in Japan's surrender which ended World War Two. "We had no idea what it was. Then at around midday, the radio stations announced that a bomb fell on Hiroshima," McKenzie recalled. A slightly larger plutonium bomb exploded over Nagasaki three days later, causing more destruction. The explosion marked the first use of atomic weapons in warfare and had a profound impact on the course of history. Credit: Getty An estimated 214,000 lives were lost in the two bombings by the end of 1945, with a majority of deaths occurring in Hiroshima, while thousands more died later from radiation poisoning. "After we saw the cloud, we took another train towards the city but eventually that was stopped and the authorities put us off. We had to walk a long way home, and it took many hours," McKenzie said. Her family in their hometown of Kure, east of Hiroshima, believed she had perished in the blast and were later amazed when she returned home. "From then on, I started believing in God. And even these days, I thank God when I wake up every morning and before I go to sleep each night," she said. Even so, McKenzie and her family suffered the impacts of war. Their port city was razed by allied bombs. "Kure was burned out. The allied bombs fell all night until there was nothing left. "We hid in tunnels, and a night we heard the explosions. And I was crying 'I do not want to die here, I do not want to die." From Hiroshima to Melbourne: Journey of a 'war bride' McKenzie's life took another unexpected turn at 19 when she met an Australian soldier while working for the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces. "I thought to myself, 'Oh, he is good looking'. And he was very good-looking," she said with a giggle. Corporal Ray Murray McKenzie was 22, and soon after, the pair began courting. "But they slowly changed their minds when they learned that most Australians were very sincere and had warm hearts," she said. The couple married in 1952 and made a home in Melbourne, marking the beginning of McKenzie's life as a 'war bride' — a term used for women who married soldiers and immigrated to their partner's home country after the war. McKenzie said her husband's family made her feel welcome and helped her establish a new life in Australia, far from home. Source: Supplied / Tetsuko McKenzie But she missed her life in Japan and like many other war brides, worried she would never return. "Life was very hard at first, in this unknown place," she said. McKenzie was among more than 650 Japanese war brides who migrated to Australia after the end of World War Two. Some struggled to settle and McKenzie shared memories of a friend who was rejected by her mother-in-law. Source: Supplied / Tetsuko McKenzie McKenzie learned typing and soon started working for the Victorian health department. After decades of marriage, McKenzie lost her husband, Ray, 18 years ago. She remains close to her extended family, especially Eri Ibuki and Tahila Pynt. "When she first told us about her experience, we just couldn't believe it. And she still remembers every detail," granddaughter Ibuki said. "We are all very proud of nanna and the way she radiates happiness and peace. And we are so grateful to still have her with us today," Ibuki said. Source: SBS / Scott Cardwell Like many young people of Japanese descent living in Australia, Ibuki and Pynt are eager to learn about their heritage and regret that, growing up, only English was spoken at home. "I would have loved to learn Japanese and it is definitely something that I would love my kids to learn, to better connect with their culture," said great-granddaughter Pynt, 21. "I plan to visit Hiroshima next year and look forward to touring the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum to learn more about the atomic bomb and the devastation that it caused. "I expect it to be heartbreaking, really, knowing that someone from my family lived through that." Tetsuko McKenzie loves to share her stories about her life in Japan with young students. Source: SBS / Scott Cardwell Masafumi Takahashi from the Association of New Elderly in Melbourne, a community group that aims to prevent social isolation among senior members, often brings young students to McKenzie's cozy home. "Her stories and experiences are just so precious and unique," Takahashi said. "It helps to understand about the destruction and the loss of life." McKenzie said the 80 th anniversary of the bombing is a time to reflect not only on the lives lost, but also on the broader consequences of atomic warfare — particularly as nuclear tensions rise in some parts of the world. "We must never forget what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. "Yet countries keep making weapons to destroy people. "When I heard that World War Two had ended, I was very happy, but at the same time, so many people had lost their lives. "And what was it all for?" When the nomadic, quasi-Australian, quasi-American restaurant critic, Besha Rodell, finally returned to Melbourne in 2017, she sent her American-born teen to a local school, only for him to come home regularly shocked by the talk he discovered in the schoolyard. In her thoughtful and beautifully written memoir, Hunger Like a Thirst, Rodell writes of her 14-year-old son's first days of school " … baffled by the teenage customs and prejudices of his Australian classmates. 'They tease people here for being poor' … racism and homophobia were thrown around casually, as banter, in a way that would never have flown in the Los Angeles public schools he'd attended." In her book about food, journalism and a life trying to find home, this wasn't the sentence I expected would stop me dead. With a son in middle school myself, in a socio-demographic setting in Melbourne almost identical to Besha's, we had also been grappling with reports of the "roasting", trash-talking and general jeers and banter that came home from our son's school. Some of the stuff — racist, homophobic and sexist — was just appalling. It seemed almost impossible for any of the kids to avoid being swept up in it, especially the younger ones. I couldn't figure out if it was commonplace, a generational thing, or specific to certain demographics — "class" is something you just can't talk about in Australia. But then of course I remembered the disgusting public chants of various private school kids that I'd covered over the years, and I remembered all the way back to my childhood, when the preferred insults of "dyke", "lezzo" and "poofter" were common at my state school. Whereas a certain aspect of the commentariat would have you believe that fears of "cancellation'" have not only eradicated any non-inclusive language, but made us painfully too cautious, the reality seems far more troubling: how common is this kind of talk among our young students? And why is the contrast with America so significant? I asked Besha. She said she could not suggest that her son's experience was universal, but Felix, now in his early 20s, went to a huge school in the middle of Los Angeles, "about the most liberal place you could be". And the socially similar school her son went to in Melbourne — an inner north high school — was not somewhere she expected to encounter bigoted viewpoints as part of the accepted culture. "We live(d) at the top end of Carlton and kids would tease him that he probably lived in the commission flats — in LA there was absolutely no shame in being poor, and in fact his wealthy friends were the ones who felt the need to defend themselves," she said. Besha said that half the kids he knew in the US were black, Asian, Latino, had gay parents. "One of his best primary school friends was trans and everyone just accepted it like it was no big thing. The schools he went to here were much, much whiter, and where there were Asian or black kids, they were socially fairly segregated." Besha's writing life has bounced her back and forth between Australia and the US for decades: her comparative analytical skills are well-honed when it comes to considering the two cultures. She is under no illusions about the horrors of the US school system — like thousands of other American parents on that day in 2012, she rushed to her son's school just to be near him and to take him home when she heard about Sandy Hook. But she can, perhaps more clearly than many of us, see the cracks in the stories we tell ourselves. "I do think Australia suffers from this idea that we're basically an equitable society, and to talk about our deficiencies is to stir trouble, miss the point or be ungrateful. That has definitely changed over the last 10 to 15 years, or is beginning to, but we still haven't had a lot of the tough conversations, publicly, that America has had to have." This week I heard the journalist Jan Fran — who with Antoinette Lattouf has an excellent news podcast called Ette — reflect on something similar: she wondered if we really were as successful a multicultural country as we like to think. The faces, the food, the surnames that dominate modern Australian culture comfortably lead us to believe that we've "done" multiculturalism better than anyone else: when "every Australian town has banh mi" how could you think otherwise? But Fran isn't buying it anymore. Talking about diversity in newsrooms, including at the ABC, she said that Australia's multiculturalism is "peripheral: 'dots' of cultures and ethnicities that orbit the monoculture like satellites, hoping to get close, but never quite at the centre". It's an analysis that stings, particularly when the slang comes home from the schoolyard and all the epithets are — still — about the assumed outsiders. When our parliaments, newsrooms, judicial benches and many other institutions all look a certain way, the satellite theory lands.
