New Jerusalem seeks generous support this Mandela Month

The Citizena day ago
This Mandela Month, the New Jerusalem Children's Home stands at the forefront of a powerful wave of generous donations, already propelled by a heartfelt contribution from Hyde Johannesburg Hotel Rosebank.
As a long-established sanctuary for vulnerable children, the home provides essential love, shelter, and education.

However, with only 80 out of 120 children currently receiving funding from the Department of Social Development, the home faces significant challenges in meeting the increasing needs of its residents.
Hopkins Kaira, the home's marketing manager, emphasised the importance of support during Mandela Month—a time when organisations and individuals mobilise resources to give back.
'In this month, we see many people and organisations stepping forward to help,' said Kaira. 'The home has expanded, and so have the needs—maintenance, school materials, uniforms, and everyday essentials, among others. The children deserve a safe and nurturing environment, and these donations directly contribute to that.'
The home's wishlist for this Mandela Month is extensive and includes storybooks, fencing, gates, dustbins, furniture, paint, toiletries, food, cleaning supplies, and more.
Moreover, volunteers are essential to the cause and are encouraged to lend their time and skills. 'Tasks like weed removal behind the centre and outdoor maintenance are crucial for creating a welcoming environment for our children,' Hopkins added.
He also highlighted that the classroom project now only requires painting.
Tshepiso Mofokeng from the Hyde Johannesburg Hotel noted the impactful early donation made on July 4, which effectively kicked off the month of giving.
He said donating is part of their ethos, and they seized the opportunity to contribute well ahead of Mandela Day on July 18.
'New Jerusalem was introduced to us by one of our colleagues, who has been working closely with the home…We partnered with them in 2023 and have been consistently donating food. It's a heartwarming initiative, allowing us to engage with the children directly,' said Mofokeng.

Kokosi Catholic Church uplifts community through Youth and Father's Day celebrations

The St Augustine Catholic Church in Kokosi went the extra mile to make Youth Month and other recent events memorable for its community. According to active church member Anastasia Lefalatsa, young people from the church helped organise a heartwarming Father's Day surprise. Each father in the congregation received a special meal and a blue ribbon as a token of appreciation. 'We held this as a surprise to make the fathers feel that they are special and valued,' Lefalatsa said. It was the first time the church hosted such an event. In addition to this, Father Don Jastin travelled to Wedela on Youth Day to host a workshop for young people from both Kokosi and Wedela. Critical issues such as unemployment, drug abuse, and gangsterism were discussed. Looking ahead, the church plans to continue its community outreach with a special initiative for Mandela Day. Salt Rock Craft Group celebrates 28 years of community building

Gloria Clarke's knitting circle has grown into a local legacy of laughter, friendship and Mandela Day giving. The Craft Group, which Gloria founded in 1997, marked the remarkable milestone of its 28th birthday with tea, cake and sandwiches at Salt Rock Library last week (June 26). For nearly three decades, the group has been a beacon of creativity, companionship and community spirit. After relocating from Benoni with her family, Gloria quickly recognised the need for a space where older residents could connect and combat the loneliness that often accompanies major life changes. What began as a small gathering soon blossomed into a vibrant community of more than 30 members by the early 2000s, prompting a move to the local library, a central and spacious venue that remains their meeting place to this day. The Craft Group is far more than a knitting circle. Members engage in a wide range of creative pursuits, from baking and gardening to jewellery-making and hosting guest speakers. Their recent project – knitting jerseys and beanies for Grade R pupils at Shakaskraal SA Primary School in honour of Mandela Day – reflects their enduring commitment to supporting underprivileged communities. 'Craft work is a dying art form,' Gloria laments, flipping through yearbooks filled with photos of members past and present. Yet despite dwindling numbers, the group continues to meet twice a month, driven by a shared love of making and meaningful connection. 'We are such a small community now, but new members are always welcome,' she smiles. 'It's more a friendship and eating club, anyway.'
