Amid rising tensions with the U.S., Iran threatens to close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil route. Despite not being a naval superpower, Iran's navy, divided into IRIN and IRGCN, employs asymmetric warfare strategies. With diverse vessels and strategically located bases, Iran aims to defend its coastlines and disrupt enemy movements, particularly in the Strait.

Amid escalating tensions with the U.S., Iran has once again threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz—a narrow chokepoint through which nearly 20% of global oil and gas flows. The threat follows Washington's decision to support Israeli military actions against Iran, stoking fears of a broader regional conflict that could disrupt global energy markets. This has put Iran's naval power under fresh scrutiny. How capable is Iran's navy, and could it realistically block the world's most critical oil artery?According to Global Firepower's 2024 rankings, Iran's navy stands 37th among 145 countries—positioning it as a mid-tier force with regional reach. Despite lacking the scale of world naval superpowers, Iran has spent decades cultivating a strategy rooted in asymmetric warfare, indigenous technology, and geographic advantage.Iran's naval forces are divided into two main branches: The Islamic Republic of Iran Navy (IRIN) – the official naval arm with over 18,500 personnel and more than 100 vessels, including submarines, frigates, and destroyers. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) – a separate and agile force focused on fast-attack crafts, mines, and hit-and-run tactics, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. Together, these forces represent a layered defense system built since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, focused heavily on defending Iran's southern coastlines and disrupting enemy movements in nearby waters, according to the Euronews. As per Global Fire Power database, Iran's conventional naval fleet boasts an increasingly diverse arsenal: Destroyers & Frigates: Modern warships like Sahand, Zagros, and Zulfiqar are equipped with precision missile systems and intelligence-gathering tools. The Alvand and Moj-class frigates, some domestically built, support medium-range operations.Iran has 25 submarines including 3 Tareq-class (Kilo-class) diesel-electric subs for mine-laying and missile launches, 2 Fateh-class attack submarines with torpedo and missile capabilities, up to 23 Ghadir-class midget subs for shallow-water operations and special missions, and 1 Nahang-class sub for special forces transport, Euronews claimed. The IRGC Navy is said to pose the real threat in the Strait of Hormuz. As per the report, it doesn't rely on large ships—it uses speed and surprise. Its fleet includes10 Houdong missile boats, 25 Peykaap II boats, 10 MK13 fast attack crafts, special units for reconnaissance, cyber warfare, and mine deployment.Their tactics focus on swarm attacks, sea mines, drones, and kamikaze-style speedboats, designed to overwhelm larger, slower enemy vessels—particularly in narrow chokepoints like Hormuz, the report claimed.Iran has also reportedly strategically located naval bases to protect both its northern (Caspian Sea) and southern (Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman) fronts:Additional IRGC-specific bases, such as Sirik, Tamb al-Kubra, and Abu Musa Island, house missile defense systems and underground bunkers near the Strait of Hormuz—bolstering Iran's control over the region, claimed the report.

Journalist Ready To Put Camera, Shield On Sale For Food, As Gaza Starves

As the war in Gaza continues with increasing intensity, the humanitarian crisis in the region has worsened dramatically. Severe shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies are being reported across the Gaza Strip, affecting not only civilians but also journalists and aid workers. In a recent LinkedIn post, Gaza-based photojournalist Mohammed Abo Oun revealed that he is selling his camera equipment and press shield in order to buy food for his family. "I am the photojournalist Mohammed Abu Aoun from Gaza, I want to offer my equipment and the press shield for sale so that I can buy food for me and my family," he wrote. Abo Oun has contributed to major international media outlets including The New York Times, Sky News, and ABC News. The United Nations and humanitarian organisations have warned that Gaza is now facing the risk of famine, with a sharp rise in malnutrition-related deaths. According to the World Food Programme, nearly one-third of Gaza's population has gone without food for days. The UN agency has stated that approximately 470,000 people are expected to face "catastrophic hunger." Although Israel claims that hundreds of truckloads of aid are waiting at the border to be distributed, humanitarian agencies say that access and coordination remain major obstacles. On Thursday, the Israeli military brought journalists to the Gaza side of the Kerem Shalom crossing to show aid boxes stacked on pallets awaiting distribution. Meanwhile, the number of hot meals provided by charity kitchens in Gaza has dropped drastically from over 1 million meals daily in April to only 160,000 this month, according to UN figures. Multiple governments have issued fresh calls for a ceasefire. On Friday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz posted on X, "The time has come to end the war in Gaza." He added, "We - France, the United Kingdom and Germany - urge all parties to bring an end to the conflict by reaching an immediate ceasefire". Earlier, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the ongoing war, saying, "Mexico is putting all its words and actions into building peace." On the other hand, former US President Donald Trump placed blame on Hamas for the breakdown in ceasefire negotiations, suggesting support for Israel's continued offensive. In remarks to reporters before leaving for a trip to Scotland, Trump said, "I think they want to die, and it's very, very bad", adding, "It got to a point where you're gonna have to finish the job." As the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, French President Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday that France will formally recognise the State of Palestine. He urged an immediate halt to hostilities to "save the civilian population." Meanwhile, Jordan has requested Israeli permission to conduct airdrops of food and baby formula into Gaza. Israeli officials have said the request is under coordination. The ongoing conflict, combined with the severe blockade of aid, has left millions vulnerable, and even the journalists covering the crisis, like Mohammed Abo Oun, are now forced to make impossible choices for survival.

The Air Force said that among the targets attacked in the strikes, terrorist squads, combat tunnels, military buildings, anti-tank firing positions, and weapons storage facilities were struck. Meanwhile, a day after withdrawing their delegations from talks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump appeared on Friday to abandon Gaza ceasefire negotiations with the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Netanyahu said Israel was now considering 'alternative" options to achieve its goals of bringing its hostages home from Gaza and ending the rule of Hamas in the territory. Trump said Hamas did not want to make a deal, and he believed the group's leaders would now be 'hunted down". Bombay HC's Observations Smack of Political Bias in Line With Centre: CPI(M) on Gaza Protest Order

New Delhi: The politbureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has condemned strongly the Bombay high court's July 25 order on the party's petition challenging the Mumbai Police's refusal to grant permission for a protest in solidarity with Palestinians, In a controversial order, the bench of Justices Ravindra Ghuge and Gautam Ankhad said, "You are looking at issues in Gaza and Palestine. Look at your own country. Be patriots. This is not patriotism." "Ironically, the bench appears to be unaware of either the provisions of the Constitution which enshrines the rights of a political party, or the history of our country and our people's solidarity with the Palestinians and their legitimate right to homeland. The observations smack of distinct political bias in line with the central government," the CPI(M) noted. The party's statement highlighted two observations by the court: 'You don't know the dust it could kick up. Getting on to the Palestine side or the Israel side. Why do you want to do this? It's obvious, going by the party you represent that you don't understand what this could do to the foreign affairs of the country.' and 'You are an organisation registered in India. If you could take up issues like garbage dumping, pollution, sewerage, flooding. We are just giving examples. You are not protesting on those but on something happening thousands of miles outside the country.' The party said that these observations overlook the fact that Mahatma Gandhi in the 40s of the last century, the national movement and subsequent foreign policy of independent India "had not flinched from supporting the cause of Palestinian people's right to freedom and homeland." "It also lays bare the fact that the bench does not realise the unequivocal condemnation globally against Israeli action and the stated positions of the UN bodies and the International Court of Justice," the party said. "We appeal to the freedom and democracy loving people of the country to join us in unambiguously rejecting such a reprehensible attitude," it finally said.
