'Significant level of depravity': Man (58) caught with child abuse imagery
Michael Kearns (58) was caught with 207 images and 164 movie files containing child abuse imagery when gardaí searched his home in April 2019 following a tip-off from an international organisation.

The abuse material involved girls and boys between the ages of five and 15 being sexually abused and exposed, the court heard on Monday.
Kearns, of Willow Wood Grove, Hartstown, Clonsilla, Dublin, pleaded guilty to possession of the material, known in law as child pornography, at his home address on dates between April 2017 and April 2019. The maximum sentence is five years.
Kearns has no previous convictions, Oisin Clarke BL, prosecuting, told the court.
Sentencing him, Judge Pauline Codd noted that the images and videos before the court involved the sexual abuse of young children, placing it in the upper category of seriousness.

The case involved 'a significant level of depravity', she said.
'Children of that age need to be protected and children in general need the courts to protect them,' the judge said.
She said the material 'was an affront to normal moral standards' and to 'anyone with any sense of decency'.
The judge said she would set a headline sentence of four years before she took a number of mitigating factors into account, including Kearns' co-operation with gardaí, his guilty plea, and the traumatic events in his life which the court heard led to him downloading the abuse material.

She set a sentence of two years and suspended the final 18 months on a number of conditions.
The court heard the Online Child Exploitation Unit was tipped off to child abuse material being downloaded by an international organisation. This IP address was traced back to Kearns' home after gardaí contacted the internet service provider.
When Kearns' home was searched in April 2019, he immediately admitted to having material on two devices, including his computer.
John Fitzgerald SC, defending, said his client's brother died of cancer in 2017 and Kearns received a diagnosis of cancer himself that year, which led to him look up pornography online. This then progressed to child sexual abuse material.
Mr Fitzgerald said his client has since received counselling and was supported in court by his wife, who wrote a letter to the court, and one of his two children.
Kearns is remorseful and ashamed of his actions, the court heard. He is someone who should have sought help for his issues rather than engaging in this activity, defence counsel submitted.
Judge Codd said she had to send a message out as she jailed Kearns for six months.

Alleged childcare predator continued working despite being stood down after alleged 'uncomfortable' incident
A childcare worker accused of indecently filming pre-pubescent boys was allowed to continue working despite being stood down and reported to the regulator after his colleague allegedly witnessed an 'uncomfortable' incident with a child. David William James, 26, allegedly abused children at Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) facilities across Sydney between April 2021 and May 2024. Police allege James photographed or filmed ten victims aged five to six while working at six out-of-school-hours (OOSH) care centres in the city's north and CBD. James' identity had been kept secret for the past nine months until a suppression order was lifted in Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday. He was employed as a casual worker through staffing agency Randstad Education and worked at 58 OOSH centres. One of his colleagues reported feeling 'uncomfortable' after witnessing an alleged interaction between him and a child at Mowbray Public School's Primary OSCare, in Lane Cove North, in June 2024. Parent company for Mowbray Public School's Primary OSCare, Junior Adventures Group (JAG), confirmed NSW Police and the Office of the Children's Guardian were notified of the alleged incident, which is separate to the police investigation. James was stood down from Mowbray Public School's Primary OSCare and he was subsequently banned from working at JAG centres. But the ban did not affect his Working with Children Check (WWCC) and he continued working for Randstad. A JAG spokeswoman said James was let go because of staff members' 'concerns'. 'The individual was stood down after concerns were raised about a separate incident that is not part of the current police investigation,' she told the Sydney Morning Herald. 'When the concerns were raised, JAG immediately took action, notifying NSW Police and the NSW Office of the Children's Guardian.' A WWCC is only affected if there is a sustained finding made under the Reportable Conduct Scheme, the Office of the Children's Guardian states. However, reporting inappropriate conduct does not always result in a person being barred from working with children. In some instances, the Office of the Children's Guardian can put an interim bar on an individual's working with children, however this was not done in James' case. Parents from Lane Cove West Public School, where James once worked, were shocked to find he retained his employment despite the complaints against him. One parent claimed the WWCC was 'obviously not comprehensive enough', while another labelled the situation a 'travesty' and an 'abomination'. It was revealed last month, before James' name could be published, that 1,200 letters were to parents and carers who may have crossed paths with him (pictured) Randstad Education has also released a statement in light of the allegations. 'We are deeply disturbed by the allegations, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the children and families impacted by the alleged offending,' they said. 'Screening of workers, including for the accused, is conducted in accordance with best practice in Child Safe recruitment principles.' Last month, 1,200 letters were sent to parents and carers whose children may have come into contact with James. The letters were sent as part of a process led by NSW Police and the AFP under the Joint Child Protection Response Program. Investigators asked parents and carers who received the letter to read it carefully, including instructions for contacting a hotline with any relevant concerns. 'Based on information currently available, investigators believe the alleged behaviour of the man involves a very small number of children, however, the parents and carers of any child who may have had contact with the man have received a letter,' the AFP said in a statement. On Thursday, AFP acting Assistant Commissioner Brett James said the investigation was launched after child abuse material was detected on the dark web in June 2024. He attended the prestigious private school Knox Grammar until 2017 and was a probationary police constable between December 2021 and September 2022. He failed to finish his probation period and resigned from the NSW Police Force in May 2023 after a stint working in a civilian capacity. NSW Police confirmed James was rejected by the force because he had failed to disclose his part-time childcare employment. 'During his employment, the man failed to seek the required approval to engage in secondary employment, and as such, police were unaware of his concurrent role in the childcare sector,' a police spokesperson said. 'We acknowledge the seriousness of the allegations and condemn any behaviour that places our community's most vulnerable members at risk.' James was initially charged last September with refusing to grant Australian Federal Police access to his phone and was arrested again a month later when he was charged with further offences. He has been charged with nine counts of aggravated use of a child to make child abuse material, one count of using a child to make abuse material, two counts of possessing abuse material and one count of refusing officers access to his phone. James has been refused bail since October and will next face court on August 21. Revealed: How long Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio could face in prison as prosecutors seek sentence - after he allegedly shared explicit video involving a minor
Spanish prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio over claims he shared a sexually explicit video involving an underage girl. Asencio, now 22, was not present during the encounter, does not appear in the footage, and is not accused of recording it. His alleged role came later, when he received the video and showed it to a friend — despite prosecutors saying he knew it had been filmed without consent and that one of the girls involved was a minor. The footage was allegedly recorded by three former Real Madrid youth players during a sexual encounter at a beach club in Gran Canaria in June 2023. One of the girls was under 16, while the other was 18. According to court documents, the recording was made secretly and shared in multiple WhatsApp groups, including one titled 'Whatever Ferran Wants'. Prosecutors say Asencio asked for the footage to be sent to him on June 23 — more than a week after the incident — and received it in a single-view format. He is accused of showing it to a third party while in Las Palmas, despite knowing the victims had requested it be deleted. He has been charged with two offences: disclosure of secrets and child pornography. The public prosecutor is seeking two years, six months and one day in prison, along with a €100 daily fine over 24 months and €10,000 in compensation for the victims. The lawyer representing the underage girl has demanded a tougher sentence. In a separate legal submission, the private prosecution is requesting a four-year prison term for Asencio and urging the court to treat him as equally responsible as the players who filmed and circulated the video. The Real Madrid defender is not alleged to have filmed the footage or appeared in it, but is facing charges of disclosing secrets and child pornography While the sentencing requests differ, this is standard in Spain's legal system. The Prosecutor's Office represents the state and proposes sentences based on its interpretation of the law. A private prosecution, acting for the victim, can argue for a harsher penalty if it believes the harm has not been fully addressed. The three players accused of filming and distributing the footage — Ferran Ruiz, Juan Rodriguez and Andres Garcia — face a proposed sentence of four years and seven months, as well as restraining orders and €25,000 in compensation for each of the two victims. None of the men involved have been convicted, and the investigation remains ongoing. Real Madrid have not publicly commented on the case. The three players who allegedly filmed the footage no longer belong to the club.

Mom of woman, 19, murdered on first date issues jaw-dropping courtroom threat to arrogant killer as he's jailed for life
The heartbroken mother of a 19-year-old woman who was murdered on a first date told her daughter's killer during his sentencing that she will haunt him for eternity. 'You and your family will be held fully responsible for the rest of your lives,' Sheena Scarborough told Maxwell Anderson on Friday as he was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Sade Robinson. 'You will be eternally haunted by myself, my ancestors... I know you can't sleep at night, they have already been at you.' Anderson, 34, was convicted in June of killing and dismembering college student Robinson during their first date last year in Milwaukee. Prosecutors said he cut up Robinson's body and dumped one of her legs near a playground. Parts of her body, including her head, were never found. 'Judge, I'm asking this demon be respectfully returned back to hell as soon as possible,' Scarborough added. Robinson's father, Carlos Robinson, suggested to the judge that someone dismember Anderson. 'Everything that he did should be done to him,' he said. 'No man should be able to live after what he did. That's just how I feel. I can't get past this. I can't.' Anderson maintained his innocence throughout the trial and the sentencing. 'I took this to trial without ever once trying to make a plea deal of any kind because I did not commit these crimes,' Anderson said on Friday. 'And so I plan to appeal my convictions, while I hope and pray that further investigations not only prove my innocence but find and deliver true justice.' Anderson and Robinson, a student at Milwaukee Area Technical College, first met at a bar in March 2024 a week before her death. Police said they then spent the late afternoon and early evening of April 1 drinking at two bars before heading back to Anderson's apartment. Photos on Anderson's phone showed Anderson groping Robinson as she lay face down on his couch. Prosecutors have argued she was incapacitated and couldn't resist. Surveillance video showed her car leaving his apartment early on the morning of April 2 and arriving at a park along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Prosecutors claimed that's where he cut her body into pieces. He later burned her car behind an abandoned building and took a bus home. Searchers discovered one of Robinson's legs in the park and her other leg and a foot near a playground close to where he burned the car. Within the car, despite 'extreme fire damage,' investigators identified the outfit Robinson had been wearing on the night of the date as well as part of an iPhone consistent with hers. A human torso and an arm believed to be Robinson's remains washed up on a beach in suburban South Milwaukee. Her head is still missing. First-degree intentional homicide in Wisconsin carries a mandatory life sentence. The only question for Anderson on Friday was whether the judge would allow him to seek parole. Anderson's attorney, Tony Cotton, asked the judge to make Anderson eligible for parole after 25 years. He argued that Anderson served in the US Navy and suffers from obvious mental health issues. Cotton acknowledged that Anderson has been convicted of multiple misdemeanor disorderly conduct counts in connection with domestic violence but they're not significant offenses compared to most homicide defendants. He added that he has concerns about Anderson's safety in prison. But judge Laura Crivello refused to offer Anderson a chance at parole. She dismissed Anderson's claims of innocence, saying his view of reality 'differs from the rest of the world.' Trailing off at times and shaking her head, she said he's irredeemable, called his crimes 'unconscionable' and likened the case to something out of a horror novel. As previously reported, before the gruesome murder, Anderson and Robinson watched the Netflix series Love, Death & Robots. The animated show's Season 2 finale, 'The Drowned Giant,' depicts the gruesome dismantling of a gigantic human body on a beach.
