Report: Saints plan to keep QB Derek Carr around for 2025
This seemed to be the direction things were going, but NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill reports that it "sounds like the Saints plan to keep Derek Carr at QB" after speaking with general manager Mickey Loomis and head coach Kellen Moore at the NFL Scouting Combine this week.
Between the Saints already leading the league in dead money for players not on their roster in 2025, which would double if Carr were released, and the lack of a competitive option behind him, the team views keeping him for the next season as their best solution. Loomis told Underhill that Carr is a quarterback they can win with, despite his 15-14 record through two years in New Orleans. Moore said he has spoken with Carr and expressed that the Saints are "fortunate" to have him, adding that discussions "went well."
Underhill did mention that there are contractual factors left to resolve, but we can take a guess at that. Carr has already indicated he won't accept a pay cut for 2025. Since cutting or trading him is off the table (and he could block a move with his no-trade clause), that leaves a restructure as the likeliest option. We've outlined before how the Saints could restructure Carr's contract this season and get out of it after 2025, if they need to. But you'd hope he plays well enough in Moore's offense to where keeping him beyond that is good for all involved.

WATCH: Rookie linebacker Danny Stutsman picks off Saints QB Spencer Rattler
Stutsman picks off Rattler Here's another throw at New Orleans Saints training camp that Spencer Rattler would like back. Both of the Saints' rookie fourth-round draft picks have now intercepted him in practice, with linebacker Danny Stutsman picking off Rattler in the end zone just days after cornerback Quincy Riley snatched an errant pass away in a similar situation. Stutsman and Rattler were college teammates at Oklahoma back in 2021. Now, we shouldn't blow this out of proportion. Training camp is when you want guys taking risks and testing the limits of what they can get away with against NFL defenders. But this was a poor decision no matter what time of year it is. See it for yourself right here. Rattler was leading the first-string offense in 7-on-9 drills against the first-team defense; Stutsman was bumped up the depth chart with Demario Davis absent from practice. The second-year QB tried a throw to wide receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr. running a crossing route through the middle of the end zone, but he was covered. Stutsman read the play as it developed and dropped back to leap the route. Even if the rookie hadn't been there, free safety Justin Reid was closing on Wilson fast, and it would've been a contested-catch situation at best. Again, this was one play. Jake Haener was intercepted at this same practice session, too, when he gambled on a deep shot to wide receiver Chris Tyree (this time, safety Julian Blackmon picked him off). But one of the big concerns with Rattler's rookie-year game tape was his decision making. He threw five interceptions and, according to Pro Football Focus charting, had 14 turnover-worthy plays on his grading sheet. He needs to show better judgment if he's going to fend off Haener and Tyler Shough in this summer's training camp competition. Hopefully this ends up being a learning moment for him.

Saints training camp: Taysom Hill making progress after ACL injury
We shouldn't make too much of this, but it's still worth noting: Taysom Hill was spotted working at New Orleans Saints training camp on Sunday. The veteran pro suffered a torn ACL last December and has been slowly recovering from that knee injury. He's been seen observing practices a few times over the summer, but on Sunday he was wearing his jersey and going through drills with a member of the training staff, off to the side. That kind of conditioning work is common for players who have missed a lot of time due to injury. And that's real progress. It isn't the same as Hill being cleared for full-contact practice and getting activated from the PUP list, but it's progress all the same. There were questions being asked all offseason about whether or not he'd continue playing football, or do so as a member of the Saints. His salary cap hit is still the highest on the team at $17,986,500. And he's still on schedule to become a free agent in 2026 when his deal runs out, leaving behind $9,723,000 in dead money. Getting him healthy and practicing with his teammates is the first step to sorting out those concerns. Hill averaged a career-high 7.1 yards per attempt as a runner last season, scoring six touchdowns in eight games as a key piece of Klint Kubiak's offense. New head coach Kellen Moore has demurred when asked about his own plans for Hill, stressing the importance of getting the player healthy first. He's progressing towards that goal. Let's see what's in store for No. 7.
