Bangladesh Probe Into Sheikh Hasina-Era Abuses Warns 'Impunity' Remains
The Commission of Inquiry into Enforced Disappearances is probing abuses during the rule of Hasina, whose government was accused of widespread human rights abuses.
That includes the extrajudicial killing of hundreds of political opponents and the unlawful abduction and disappearance of hundreds more.
The commission was established by interim leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, 84, who is facing intense political pressure as parties jostle for power ahead of elections expected early next year.
Bangladesh has a long history of military coups and the army retains a powerful role.
"Enforced disappearances in Bangladesh were not isolated acts of wrongdoing, but the result of a politicised institutional machinery that condoned, normalised, and often rewarded such crimes," the commission said, in a section of a report released by the interim government on Monday.
"Alarmingly, this culture of impunity continues even after the regime change on August 5, 2024".
The commission has verified more than 250 cases of enforced disappearances spanning the 15 years that Hasina's Awami League was in power.
Commission chief Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury said earlier this month that responsibility lay with individual officers, who were "involved in conducting enforced disappearances", but not the armed forces as an institution.
Earlier this month, a joint statement by rights groups -- including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch -- called on the security forces to "fully cooperate with the commission by guaranteeing unfettered and ongoing access to all detention centres... and providing free access to records regarding those seized or detained".
Hasina,77, remains in self-imposed exile in India, where she fled after she was ousted last year.
She has defied orders to return to Dhaka to face charges amounting to crimes against humanity. Her trial in absentia continues.

ECI defers meeting with multi-party delegation over Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar
New Delhi [India], July 1 (ANI): The Election Commission of India (ECI) has postponed a scheduled meeting with a multi-party delegation on Wednesday regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar due to 'lack of confirmation' from the participating political parties, sources in the poll panel said. The meeting was originally scheduled on July 2 at 5 PM, they said. Claiming to represent multiple political parties in the matter, the meeting was initially requested by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), via an email on June 30, EC sources said on Tuesday. Following standard procedure, the Commission contacted the relevant political parties to confirm their participation in the proposed meeting. However, as of July 1, no confirmation had been received from any of the parties, the ECI sources said. 'An email was received on June 30 from a legal counsel of AICC, seeking an urgent appointment with the Election Commission for July 2, regarding SIR of Bihar on behalf of many political parties, by representing himself as a counsel of the multi-party delegation.' 'The Commission sought confirmation from these political parties for such a meeting on 2 July 2025 at 5 PM. However, the Commission has not received any confirmation so far. Hence, the meeting of July 2, 2025, had to be deferred,' the sources said. Following the Election Commission of India's decision to conduct Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of the state assembly polls, Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Monday affirmed that the main objective of the initiative is to avoid any 'illegible' voter and ensure that no one is left out of the voter list. 'As per the Representation of the People Act, you are entitled to vote only in the Assembly constituency where you are an ordinary resident. For example, if you ordinarily reside in Delhi but own a house in Patna, your vote should be registered in Delhi, not in Patna,' Chief Election Commissioner said in a statement. In his statement, the Chief Election Commissioner stated that one lakh volunteers have also been deployed to assist the elderly, sick, persons with disabilities (PwD) and marginalised groups in filling up their Enumeration Forms. Fugitive Bangladesh ex-PM Sheikh Hasina denies crimes against humanity charges
Bangladesh's fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has denied accusations that she committed crimes against humanity, her state-appointed defence lawyer said on Tuesday (July 1, 2025). Up to 1,400 people were killed between July and August last year, according to the United Nations, when Ms. Hasina's government ordered a crackdown on protesters in a failed bid to cling to power. Ms. Hasina fled to India at the culmination of the student-led uprising in August and has defied orders to return to Dhaka, where her trial in absentia opened on June 1. Prosecutors have filed five charges against Ms. Hasina — abetment, incitement, complicity, facilitation, conspiracy and failure to prevent mass murder — that amount to crimes against humanity under Bangladeshi law. Defence lawyer Amir Hossain said Ms. Hasina has denied all charges, telling journalists that he would present "arguments to seek her discharge from these allegations". The ousted leader's banned Awami League, in a statement issued in London, called it a "show trial" and said that the accused "categorically denies the charges". To illustrate the allegations against Ms. Hasina, prosecutors have drawn up a list of key examples from their bulky dossier. They accuse her of incitement to violence, as well as ordering the use of lethal weapons including from helicopters. Chief prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam said Ms. Hasina was driven by a desire to cling to power at all costs. He pointed to her alleged push for people to "worship" her late father, the founding president of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. "Her father had the same obsession with holding on to power," Islam said. Bihar rolls revision: INDIA Bloc and ECI meeting scheduled for tomorrow called off
New Delhi: A meeting scheduled between the INDIA Bloc and Election Commission of India (ECI) officials over Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is unlikely to take place on Wednesday due to lack of confirmation from the political outfits' side, sources in the poll panel said on Tuesday. ECI insiders confirmed that after putting in a request for an appointment on Wednesday, the parties appear to have backed out of the meeting. 'The Commission sought confirmation from these political parties for a meeting on July 2 at 5 p.m. However, the Commission has not received any confirmation so far. Hence, the meeting of July 2 had to be deferred,' said an official source. Shedding light on the chain of events, the ECI insider said, 'An email was received on June 30 from a legal counsel of AICC, seeking an urgent appointment with the Election Commission for July 2 regarding SIR of Bihar on behalf of many political parties, by representing himself as a counsel of multi-party delegation.' Last month, the ECI commenced an SIR of the electoral rolls aimed at verifying the eligibility of every voter in Bihar ahead of the November-December Assembly election. Under the SIR, the ECI is reinforcing its booth-level workforce by appointing 20,603 additional Booth Level Officers (BLOs), augmenting the current strength of 77,895 BLOs across the state. Over 1 lakh volunteers have also been roped in to assist genuine electors, especially senior citizens, the disabled, the sick, the economically disadvantaged, and other vulnerable groups. All recognised national and state political parties have appointed 1,54,977 Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to aid in the revision process, with the option to appoint more agents as the work progresses. Enumeration Forms (EFs) are being distributed door-to-door and are also available online for Bihar's 7.89 crore registered electors across 243 Assembly constituencies. Out of these, around 4.96 crore electors, who were registered as of January 1, 2003, need only to verify their details and submit the EF. The ECI has also uploaded the 2003 Electoral Roll of Bihar, comprising details of 4.96 crore electors, on its website as a measure to facilitate the ongoing SIR. Highlighting that nearly 60 per cent of the total electorate in the state would not have to submit any documents, the official said in a statement that these voters can verify their details from the 2003 Electoral Rolls and submit the filled-up Enumeration Form. Both the electors as well the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) would be able to readily access these details, he said. The uploading of the 2003 Electoral Roll on the ECI website – - would hugely facilitate the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, said the statement. The ECI said District Magistrates and Divisional Commissioners are overseeing the deployment of BLOs, who are now working full-time on the revision exercise. Additionally, the ECI is reaching out to voters through SMS campaigns targeting over 5.74 crore registered mobile numbers in Bihar.
