SENDAI (Kyodo) -- Yuya Gunji hit a solo home run in the top of the second and Shoma Kanemura pitched a complete-game shutout to give the Nippon Ham Fighters a 1-0 win against the Rakuten Eagles in Pacific League baseball on Friday.
Kanemura (4-2) scattered five hits and a walk while striking out six in his 104-pitch outing at Rakuten Mobile Park Miyagi.
Leading off the second inning, starting catcher Gunji sent his first pitch from Takahisa Hayakawa, a 145 kilometer-per-hour fastball, just inside the left-field foul pole.
The go-ahead blast continued a run of improved form following a nine-game hitless streak that ended with an ice-breaking RBI against the Orix Buffaloes on May 15.
"Things have gotten better since that at-bat," said Gunji, whose ability to play multiple positions has made him indispensable on defense for the PL leaders.
Hayakawa (1-5) struck out nine and allowed four hits and a walk over seven innings. Rakuten slugger Hideto Asamura closed to within one hit of 2,000 for his career after going 1-for-3 with a single in the second.

Baseball: Munetaka Murakami hits 1st homer of season, Yakult wins 7th straight

YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) -- Munetaka Murakami hit his first home run of the season in his return from a long injury absence Tuesday, helping the Yakult Swallows extend their season-best winning streak to seven games. Murakami's opposite-field blast to left off Katsuki Azuma (10-5) started a three-run second inning in the Swallows' 5-1 victory over the DeNA BayStars at Yokohama Stadium. The 25-year-old slugger was playing in his only second game of the season after an upper body injury kept him sidelined for about three and a half months. Jose Osuna added a solo home run for Yakult in the sixth while Peter Lambert (3-7) threw six innings of one-run ball for the win. Among the day's other games, Hotaka Yamakawa hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the fourth as the SoftBank Hawks rose to the top of the Pacific League standings with a 5-2 win over the Nippon Ham Fighters. Baseball: Hiroto Saiki hurls 4-hit shutout as CL-leading Tigers win

NISHINOMIYA (Kyodo) -- Hiroto Saiki threw a four-hit shutout as the Central League-leading Hanshin Tigers beat the DeNA BayStars 2-0 on Saturday in their first game after the All-Star break. Saiki (8-5) scattered four singles without a walk in a 116-pitch gem at Koshien Stadium, striking out nine in his second shutout of the season. Yusuke Oyama plated the opening run with two outs and runners on the corners in the first inning, singling to center off Anthony Kay (5-6). Kay allowed two runs on three hits and three walks over six innings as the BayStars lost against the Tigers for the fourth straight time.
