Akola: Senior
Congress
leader and noted orthopaedic surgeon Dr Abhay Patil, who contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket, has quit the party. He announced his resignation through a Facebook post on Tuesday, stating that he is stepping down from the party's primary membership.
The resignation sparked speculation within political circles, particularly due to its timing — coming shortly after the announcement of a new District Congress Committee. Sources claimed that Dr Patil was upset over not being consulted during the formation of the new leadership panel. But he cited personal reasons. "Being occupied with my medical profession and social work, I was unable to dedicate sufficient time to party activities.
Holding a position without contributing actively is against my principle. Hence, I decided to step down," he said.
He denied any dissatisfaction with the newly-appointed district committee. "There is no resentment. The party has always supported me and given me numerous opportunities," he said.
In 2024, Dr Patil contested from Akola constituency as a Congress candidate. He secured 4,16,404 votes but lost to
BJP
's Anup Dhotre. He is former general secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee and regional coordinator of Maratha Kranti Morcha for Akola and Washim. He is actively involved in various religious and social initiatives.

Govt will be compelled to push bills in din if Oppn's protest continues in Parliament: Rijiju

The government will be compelled to press for the passage of its bills amid protests in Parliament, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Monday, as the Opposition's relentless disruptions over SIR dimmed the prospects of normal functioning of the two Houses. While the Lok Sabha saw little transaction of any listed business on Monday, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned as a mark of respect for its member and former Jharkhand chief minister Shibu Soren, who passed away this morning. Rijiju insisted that the government wants a thorough discussion in Parliament over its bills but will be compelled to push for their passage from Tuesday in "national interest" as the proposed legislations are important for governance. Hitting out at the opposition parties, he said that they had agreed to a two-day discussion over the National Sports Governance Bill and National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, both of which were scheduled to be taken up together for consideration and passage in the Lok Sabha on Monday, but they disrupted proceedings. The Opposition has been insisting that the government agree to its demand for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar before pushing its legislative agenda through Parliament. The minister, however, made it clear that a debate on SIR cannot take place in Parliament as the exercise is part of the Election Commission's administrative action and functioning. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, he noted, had cited a ruling by former speaker Balram Jakhar, a late Congress veteran, that Parliament cannot discuss the functioning of a constitutional body like the EC. Parliament can discuss electoral reforms but not the EC's functioning, he said, adding that the poll watchdog has carried out SIR earlier as well. Except for a two-day discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor in both the Houses, parliamentary proceedings have been all but a washout since the Monsoon session began on July 21 as the SIR exercise in Bihar has ignited vociferous protests from opposition parties

Net Direct Tax Collection Surges After Reduction Of Corporate Tax Rates: Minister

New Delhi: The net direct tax collection saw strong growth in FY25 at Rs 22,26,375 crore, a 13.48 per cent year-on-year growth, as there has been an overall increase in collections after reduction of the corporate tax rates with effect from Assessment year (AY) 2020-21, the Parliament was informed on Monday. Since FY 2021-22, the growth in net direct tax collection has been robust, Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, told the Lok Sabha in a written reply. The total revenue impact on account of tax benefits extended to companies was Rs 88,109.27 crore and Rs 98,999.57 crore (projected) in FY 2022-23 and FY 2023-24, respectively. "The above tax benefits have the impact of making the corporates competitive and encouraging investment and, therefore, economic growth," the minister said. To encourage startups, initiatives taken have resulted in an increase in the number of startups claiming deduction under Section 80IAC of the Income Tax Act from 328 in AY 2022-23 to 877 in AY 2024-25. Further, the number of companies covered under Section 80JJAA in respect of employment of new employees has increased from 2,838 in AY 2022-23 to 3,644 in AY 2024-25, said Chaudhary. "The specific incentives are provided in the Income-tax Act through the Finance Bill. The initiatives taken have led to the generation of employment, an increase in tax revenue and overall economic growth," he noted. In order to create a globally competitive business environment for domestic companies, attract fresh investment and create employment opportunities, section 115BAA and section 115BAB were introduced in the Income Tax Act through the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Act, 2019. The impact of Section 115BAB is reflected in a significant growth of new manufacturing companies from 2,928 in AY 2022-23 to 7,185 in AY 2024-25, according to the minister. India's total gross direct tax collections (before adjusting for refunds) have more than doubled in the last five years, reflecting the high economic growth and improved tax compliance in the country, which has been encouraged with the introduction of the new digital technology.
