Melancholic melodies
The musical creation tackles the concept of 'melancholy' as portrayed in literature.
Throughout the making, lead singer Michelle Zauner explored European romanticism, Greek mythology and gothic romance classics, including Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, which is reflected in the music.
'Based on what I was reading and the art I was consuming, it (the album) became like a series of moral tales about people who lose the balance of their lives and are lured by temptation,' Michelle said in an interview.
The project is also set to mark the band's return to examining dark and moody themes. Their third album Jubilee (2021), which earned a Grammy nomination for best alternative music album, explored happier feelings than earlier works. The frontwoman is also known for her bestselling 2021 memoir Crying in H Mart, where she wrote about grieving her mother's death.
Alongside Michelle, the band consists of Peter Bradley (guitar), Deven Craige (bass) and Craig Hendrix (drums, keyboards, backing vocals).

Shattering the dance floor
American rapper and producer Tyler the Creator's new album Don't Tap the Glass released this week. The 10-track creation was first teased during a concert the artist held on July 18, in which an art installation was displayed outside the venue, featuring a figure enclosed in a clear box, with the title written on the front. The day after, the website went live, promoting the album and selling merchandise. The night before the release, the artist hosted an album-listening party titled 'Don't Come If You Aren't Going to Dance', which did not allow phones or cameras in. On his social media, Tyler shared a statement expressing his feelings reflecting on the party, stating how freeing it felt to see 300 people gathered to have a good time without shame or worry. 'I asked some friends why they don't dance in public and some said because of the fear of being filmed. I thought damn, a natural form of expression and a certain connection they have with music is now a ghost,' Tyler said, explaining the inspiration for the hosted party. 'I just got back from a listening party for this album and man it was one of the greatest nights of my life. Everyone was dancing, moving, expressing, sweating, it was truly beautiful,' he said. 'This album was not made for sitting still. Dancing, driving, running, any type of movement is recommended to maybe understand the spirit of it, only at full volume,' he added.

A musical dialogue
American musician Zac Farro drops his debut solo album Operator tomorrow. Primarily known as a founding member and the drummer of Grammy-winning rock band Paramore, the artist is now embarking on a new journey with nine tracks, which he initially 'did not have too much of a vision for' but they eventually came together while working in the studio with close friends and co-writers Josh Gilligan and Matt Chancey. Zac said that he let 'vibe and intuition guide him' without an overarching theme in mind, which led to creating a relatable body of work exploring shared human experiences such as anxieties, family issues and communication. 'We said, let's show up at the studio and see what happens,' the 35-year-old recalled. 'I've always had such a vision, even sometimes the name of an album, before I go in, this one was like, if we're together, the magic will reveal itself. And it did,' he added. The creative talent said that despite running a solo musical project titled HalfNoise, he chose to release the record under his own name due to it being his most personal creation, as it is expected to musically feature sounds inspired by 70's rock and psychedelic tunes the artist sought through his personal hard times. 'This record is an entire inner dialogue with myself, within myself, so it felt right to cut out the middleman and go 'This is Zac Farro'. It's exciting and it feels a lot more pointed,' he explained. The drummer embarked on his musical career with Paramore at the age of 14 in 2004; he departed from the band in 2010 to create HalfNoise. Seven years later, Zac returned as a drummer for Paramore, which currently consists of him alongside vocalist Hayley Williams and guitarist Taylor York. Under HalfNoise, Zac released five studio albums, with the latest one being City Talk in 2023. With Paramore, the drummer was involved in the band's entire discography with the exception of their 2013 self-titled album.

American superhero film Superman is out now in theatres. Superman Clark Kent (David Corenswet) finds himself on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his adoptive human family on earth. When he gets drawn into conflicts, his actions are questioned, providing tech billionaire Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) an opportunity to get Clark out of the way for good. Written and directed by James Gunn, the second reboot of the Superman film series is set to be the first in the DC Universe, produced by DC Studios, a newly created production entity under Warner Brothers Discovery, co-chaired by James and producer Peter Safran, dissolving its predecessor DC Films in 2022. The reconstruction came after a number of DC Films productions, including Justice League (2017), were not received positively, as well as the cancellation of the highly-anticipated Batgirl movie, which was initially scheduled for a 2022 release. In an interview, James, who is known for directing other superhero films including Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, said he took a lighter approach to the DC Comics superhero – the previous Superman films and appearances had a grittier approach. 'In some ways, it's lighter. But there's a lot of heavy stuff in the movie as well,' James explained. 'I loved the colour and the joy of the comic books that I enjoyed growing up with, and I wanted to imbue this film with that feeling. 'He's (Clark) from a non-dysfunctional family, he has parents who love him, he's growing up in a loving household with support and emotional presence from his parents, and he's the result of that. 'And I think that he's a pretty well-adjusted guy because of that. However, he has his flaws as well,' he added.
