KOTA KINABALU: Community Development and People's Wellbeing Minister Datuk James Ratib has proposed that rural doctor allowances in Sabah and Sarawak be exempted from the current federal freeze. He said the proposal would be brought up with Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad during a scheduled meeting on Thursday.
Advertisement James warned that the freeze could discourage contract doctors from renewing their service in remote areas, worsening the rural doctor shortage in Sabah. Speaking at the 17th Public Health Colloquium on Wednesday, he also highlighted ongoing basic facility issues in rural Sabah, including poor internet access, water supply, and electricity. SUNGAI BULOH, July 4 — The Health Ministry said it is aware of the high patient load at referral hospitals such as Sungai Buloh Hospital, following concerns that its doctors are overworked. It was responding to a social post with a photo of a notice for clinic staff, saying that merely three medical officers and one specialist were present to attend to 300 patients. 'The clinic was staffed by three specialists and three medical officers, in accordance with the existing schedule and capacity,' the ministry insisted, contradicting the clinic's notice.

Health Ministry dismisses viral claim nurses are underpaid
PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry has dismissed viral claims suggesting that the nursing profession is no longer attractive due to the lack of allowances and pension benefits, confirming that critical allowances are still paid under eligible service schemes. "The Critical Allowance will continue to be provided to eligible and approved service schemes, but at a fixed rate (based on the last paid amount) from December 1, 2024, in line with the implementation of the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA)," the ministry stated via the government's Biar Betul fact-checking channel on Facebook. For new appointments to the public service starting Feb 1, 2024, the appointments will be on an interim contract basis for a period of three years, it added. The ministry also mentioned that the government will review and decide on a new method for permanent appointments, including issues related to pension schemes. "The health profession, particularly the field of nursing, will remain the backbone of the national healthcare service," it said. Additionally, the ministry dismissed claims that the 45-hour work week has put nurses under pressure, making the profession unattractive to the younger generation. It's important because departments like the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have already set a BMI requirement for promotions. 'I will implement this at the MACC, as we are also an enforcement agency. I want to make sure our officers are always fit and able to do their job well,' he said. Azam said the MACC has set a maximum BMI limit of 27, with internal administrative directives to be issued soon. 'I had earlier announced that (personnel) at each state would be required to undergo health check-ups at government hospitals every three months.
