KOTA KINABALU: Community Development and People's Wellbeing Minister Datuk James Ratib has proposed that rural doctor allowances in Sabah and Sarawak be exempted from the current federal freeze. He said the proposal would be brought up with Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad during a scheduled meeting on Thursday.
Advertisement James warned that the freeze could discourage contract doctors from renewing their service in remote areas, worsening the rural doctor shortage in Sabah. Speaking at the 17th Public Health Colloquium on Wednesday, he also highlighted ongoing basic facility issues in rural Sabah, including poor internet access, water supply, and electricity. He further urged the Health Ministry to strengthen regulations on e-cigarettes, noting concerns over the use of banned substances in some products. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Just four doctors to see 300 patients a day? Health Ministry says aware of high load at Sg Buloh Hospital

SUNGAI BULOH, July 4 — The Health Ministry said it is aware of the high patient load at referral hospitals such as Sungai Buloh Hospital, following concerns that its doctors are overworked. After it was highlighted that the hospital's Orthopaedic Specialist Clinic had to see 300 patients on June 30, 2025, the ministry said the number had also included family members or caregivers. 'We understand the difficulties faced by patients and their families, especially concerning waiting times,' it posted on X yesterday. 'The Ministry of Health is aware of the high patient load at referral hospitals such as Sungai Buloh Hospital and continuous efforts are being made to improve patient flow.' The ministry said that its review showed that 158 patients attended the clinic that day. Dihantar olh seorang yang namanya tidak mahu dikenali. Dia membawa ahli keluarganya ke Hospital Sg Buloh semalam & terpaksa menunggu agak lama. This is extremely worrying & may be jeopardising both the workforce & the patients' wellbeing. @anwaribrahim@DrDzul @KKMPutrajaya — BarathiSelvam (@barathiSelvam10) July 1, 2025 'This is a common practice in public healthcare facilities, particularly for elderly patients and children,' it said, referring to the presence of family members and caregivers. It was responding to a social post with a photo of a notice for clinic staff, saying that merely three medical officers and one specialist were present to attend to 300 patients. 'The clinic was staffed by three specialists and three medical officers, in accordance with the existing schedule and capacity,' the ministry insisted, contradicting the clinic's notice.

Health Ministry dismisses viral claim nurses are underpaid

PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry has dismissed viral claims suggesting that the nursing profession is no longer attractive due to the lack of allowances and pension benefits, confirming that critical allowances are still paid under eligible service schemes. "The Critical Allowance will continue to be provided to eligible and approved service schemes, but at a fixed rate (based on the last paid amount) from December 1, 2024, in line with the implementation of the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA)," the ministry stated via the government's Biar Betul fact-checking channel on Facebook. For new appointments to the public service starting Feb 1, 2024, the appointments will be on an interim contract basis for a period of three years, it added. The ministry also mentioned that the government will review and decide on a new method for permanent appointments, including issues related to pension schemes. "The health profession, particularly the field of nursing, will remain the backbone of the national healthcare service," it said. Additionally, the ministry dismissed claims that the 45-hour work week has put nurses under pressure, making the profession unattractive to the younger generation. The ministry was clarifying viral claims that indicated critical allowances were no longer paid to new recruits from January 1, 2020.

Obese MACC officers not eligible for promotion from January 2026: Azam Baki

He said the move was aimed at emphasising the importance of health among MACC personnel, while also ensuring their fitness remained at an optimal level. 'Many civil servants are dealing with obesity or excessive weight. When we're overweight, it affects our appearance, fitness and service delivery to the public. 'Just imagine if a government officer is overweight; they won't be able to perform well and they'll be at risk of various health problems,' he said at a press conference after the handing over of duties between Kelantan MACC's new director Azmin Yusoff and former director Rosli Husain here today. Azam said a circular on the matter would be issued next week, and all officers would be given six months to manage their health. 'This especially applies to those with weight issues; they need to lose weight unless they have underlying medical conditions. It's important because departments like the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have already set a BMI requirement for promotions. 'I will implement this at the MACC, as we are also an enforcement agency. I want to make sure our officers are always fit and able to do their job well,' he said. Azam said the MACC has set a maximum BMI limit of 27, with internal administrative directives to be issued soon. 'I had earlier announced that (personnel) at each state would be required to undergo health check-ups at government hospitals every three months. 'State and divisional MACC directors have acted on this. If you have a health issue, seek treatment and change your lifestyle,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
