Uriah Rennie remembered as ‘epitome of a role model' after death at 65
Once described as the 'fittest' match official in world football, Rennie recently revealed he was learning to walk again after a rare neurological condition left him paralysed from the waist down.
After his death was announced on Sunday, Howard Webb, the Professional Game Match Officials Board Limited (PGMOL) chief refereeing officer, paid tribute to his former colleague.
Webb said in a statement: 'Uri was not only a trailblazer who paved the way for many others after becoming the first black referee in the Premier League, he was a great person and a great referee who cared deeply about his community and helping people fulfil their potential.
'He was a strong influence on our refereeing group too, offering a calming presence and we shared many good times together.
'An epitome of a role model, Uri was a valued member of the football family who has been taken from us too soon. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. He will be sorely missed by us all but his legacy will live on.'
We are deeply saddened to hear the heartbreaking news about Uriah Rennie.

Rennie started refereeing locally in 1979 before making history in 1997 when taking charge of his first Premier League match between Derby and Wimbledon, which he had to abandon because of a floodlight failure at Pride Park.
The Premier League said on X: 'Uriah was a pioneering trailblazer whose legacy will live on, continuing to inspire future generations.'
Rennie became a FIFA-listed referee in 2000 and joined the select group of professionals one year later before retiring in 2008.
Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out said on X: 'We are deeply saddened to hear the heartbreaking news about Uriah Rennie.

'Uriah played a massive role in shaping the game as we know it today. Football should always be grateful to him.'
In November 2023 martial arts expert Rennie was awarded an honorary doctorate by Sheffield Hallam University for his distinguished contributions to sport and his work with South Yorkshire communities.
He was last month installed as the chancellor of the university and was labelled by former Premier League referee Chris Foy as a 'real community hero in that part of the world'.
In an emotional interview with talkSPORT, Foy said: 'He was a gentleman, a gentle giant. He was a friend to me, a mentor to me, he was just a special person who put everybody first before himself.
'He was a real presence on the field and he was a real presence off the field, a true gentleman. If it was difficult for him, he never showed it because he was always grounded. He loved refereeing.'
Another former Premier League referee, Dermot Gallagher, told Sky Sports: 'As a person he was humble, he was quiet, he was unassuming. But most importantly, he was kind.'

Ex-England and Premier League star ‘arrested in Stansted Airport in front of stunned passengers'
A former Premier League and England footballer was arrested at an airport in front of 'stunned passengers', according to a report. The star was held after disembarking a budget airline after landing at Stansted Airport from Europe earlier this year, a police source said. Essex Police told The Independent that a 36-year-old man was arrested on 27 April on suspicion of breaching a non-molestation court order. 'You can imagine it was a huge surprise for other passengers at the airport when they saw him being spoken to by police officers at passport control,' the source told The Sun. 'He had already been recognised by lots of people on the plane journey so it wasn't as if he was keeping a low profile.' The source said he played for England and in the Premier League so attracted attention. After an issue was flagged to Border Force officers at passport control, police were called and the man was led away for questioning, the source said. 'It caused quite a kerfuffle as there were lots of other passengers around in the arrivals area of Stansted where he was arrested,' they added. A spokesperson for Essex Police said: 'A 36 year-old man was arrested at Stansted Airport on 27 April on suspicion of breaching a non-molestation order. 'He was released on bail.'

Rangers signings are Championship dross while Celtic go backwards as Hotline flamethrower burns the big two
It's been a busy start to the transfer window for Rangers and Celtic with both clubs making early moves. But one unbiased Hotline caller reckons both clubs have been off their trollies in the summer shopping spree – with Rangers signing duds and Celtic in reverse. Jim McClean, Rothesay, said: 'At the moment I am glad I don't support Rangers or Celtic. Rangers are signing dross and loans once again and getting rid of better players they are signing. 'As for Celtic, they are only content to build up the biscuit tin again no wonder the fans are cracking up as they haven't signed one decent player apart from Tierney. 'Celtic are resting on their laurels once again, and they are going backwards.' There are not many tears among Celtic fans over the departure of Nicholas Kuhn to Como. Instead, Hoops fans reckon they are laughing all the way to the bank with around £17m on the way for the German winger. Liam Birney, Paisley, said: 'You have to laugh at the ridiculous and embarrassing comment from Carl McCoy in Saturday's Hotline saying Nicolas Kuhn was a failure in Scotland. 'Is he referring to the same winger who scored 18 goals and had 12 assists from 38 appearances (6 as a sub) in the season just past? "No other winger in Scotland got near those stats. But the un-real McCoy knows better than the Serie A side who paid over £17m for him! The jealousy is evident.' Scott McAdam, Glasgow, said: 'I remember a while back callers laughing about Celtic getting £15m for Kuhn. Well those laughs must have turned to tears because it's £17m. "What a bit of business by the champions again. These guys just open their gubs and their bellies rumble.' Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: 'For Celtic seemingly close to receiving £17m for a player who downed tools at the latter part of the season and clearly didn't want to be here any more is an astonishing piece of business. 'And with Rangers holding out for a paltry £5m for their top goalscorer and bringing in players from Peterborough and Luton indicating once again there won't be a title race this season.' As for Gers signings, boss Russell Martin has been plundering the English market. And Rab Picken, London, said: 'Living in England and seeing a lot of Championship games, I can assure the callers Celtic players wouldn't get on the bench in many of the teams. 'With free signings like serial chocolate soldier Kieran Tierney and the 19-year-old Fulham reserve player Callum Osmand, I don't think Russell and Rangers have much to worry about.' One Gers fan is not worried about the league the signings are coming from, more the nationalities. Robert Livingston, Palm Beach, said: 'Will Martin's foreign players know what it really means to play for Rangers? I doubt it. 'It's like Martin wants to turn Gers into the Foreign Legion. In days past, Souness and Smith's successful teams always had a Scottish core. 'I'm old enough to remember Rangers' greatest XI of all home grown – Greig, Brand, Henderson, Baxter just to name a few. They won trophy after trophy."

Tottenham face Champions League opposition for Mohammed Kudus after bid rejected
Tottenham are planning to make an improved bid for West Ham star Mohammed Kudus, but there is competition for his signature. The Hammers are open to selling the 24-year-old, who has a release clause of £85m. Spurs have seen a bid of £50m rejected for the former Ajax star, but believe they can get their man for less than his release clause. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Tottenham are expected to make another bid for the Ghana international, with new manager Thomas Frank signing off on a move for Kudus. There is plenty of interest in the attacking midfielder, though, with the BBC reporting that 'at least six top clubs' have contacted West Ham about the availability of Kudus. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. Chelsea is one of those clubs that have made an inquiry and could still beat Tottenham to signing Kudus. The player is happy to make a move, targeting a Champions League club, with both Chelsea and Tottenham able to offer him that. Kudus joined the Hammers from Ajax in the summer of 2023 for an initial £38m and had a standout first season with the east London club. He scored 14 goals in all competitions, making 45 appearances as he swiftly became a key player. The last campaign was less fruitful, scoring five goals in 35 outings across a difficult season for the club. Spurs are looking to build a new squad under manager Thomas Frank, although the only confirmed signings so far have been loan moves made permanent. Mathys Tel has signed from Bayern Munich and Kevin Danso from Lens, but the club want to bring in further additions after winning the Europa League and qualifying for the Champions League. Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo and Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze have all been linked with moves to Spurs, but there is competition for all of them. More Trending Manchester United are leading the chase for Mbeumo, while Arsenal are also being heavily linked with signing Eze. There will also be outgoings this summer from Spurs, with Richarlison linked with a move away from the Premier League, while Cristian Romero also looks likely to leave. Captain Son Heung-min has also been linked with a move, with MLS sides interested in the South Korean forward. The Sun report that 32-year-old is set for talks with Thomas Frank next week over his future, with just one year left on his contract in north London.
