Trump administration releases huge trove of documents about Dr Martin Luther King Jr - as President faces revolt over Epstein files
The disclosure, which was opposed by many of the civil rights hero's family, includes more than 240,000 pages of records that had been under court seal since 1977.
Dr King's two living children, Martin III, 67, and Bernice, 62, said their father's killing has been a "captivating public curiosity for decades".
But they emphasised the personal nature of their father's death and urged that the files be "viewed within their full historical context".
Dr King was shot and killed on 4 April, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, while headed to dinner with friends.
The night before the assassination, Dr King delivered his famous "Mountaintop" speech on a stormy night.
James Earl Ray was eventually apprehended after a long manhunt and pleaded guilty to the killing, but he later renounced his plea and maintained his innocence until his death in 1998.
Members of Dr King's family and others have questioned if Ray acted alone or if he was even involved at all.
Keen interest in the files
Historians, journalists and the public have been waiting to study the now-unsealed documents to see what else can be learned about Dr King's death.
It has long been established that then-FBI Director J Edgar Hoover was intensely interested in Dr King and others he considered radicals.
FBI records previously released show how his bureau wiretapped Dr King's telephone lines, bugged his hotel rooms and used informants to gather information, including evidence of Dr King's extramarital affairs.
"He was relentlessly targeted by an invasive, predatory, and deeply disturbing disinformation and surveillance campaign orchestrated by J Edgar Hoover through the Federal Bureau of Investigation," the King children said in their statement.
The Kings said they "support transparency and historical accountability" but "object to any attacks on our father's legacy or attempts to weaponise it to spread falsehoods".

The release of the documents comes at a time when President Trump is facing an increasing revolt from the MAGA faithful over what is seen as his reluctance to release files relating to paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Following the release of documents relating to her father, Bernice King took to Instagram and posted a a black-and-white photo of Dr King, looking annoyed, with the caption: "Now, do the Epstein files."

Third girl, 10, dies in Miami boat crash at sailing camp as captains' toxicology reports are revealed
A 10-year-old girl has been identified as the third victim who died after a sailboat crashed into a massive barge in Miami. Arielle Mazi Bucham died alongside two other girls, Erin Co, 13, and seven-year-old Mila Yankelevich, after their Miami Youth Sailing Foundation summer camp boat collided with a 60-foot barge around 11am Monday in Biscayne Bay. Bucham's family's place of worship announced her passing Sunday morning, stating: 'With broken hearts, we announce the funeral service of our beloved Arielle Mazi Bucham.' Arielle was one of the victims who was critically ill in hospital, but sadly succumbed to her injuries days later. Her service is set to be held Sunday afternoon, CBS News reported. News of the third victim's death comes just days after the boat captains' toxicology reports came back negative, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed on Friday. 'I can confirm alcohol and drug testing was completed for both individuals onboard the tug and barge as well as the sailboat operator. All results were negative,' a spokesperson with the federal agency said. Both Co and Yankelevich died from accidental drowning, according to the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner Department's report. Bucham's cause of death remains unclear. After the two vessels collided in Biscayne Bay, the U.S. Coast Guard said the boat captains' toxicology reports came back negative The three girls were among five children aboard the sunken sailboat. A 19-year-old camp counselor was also with them at the time. Co and Yankelevich were pronounced dead while on their way to Ryder Trauma Center, per the Miami Herald. Two others, Bucham and an eight-year-old, were taken to the hospital in critical condition. The unidentified counselor and other child, 12, walked away unharmed. The eight-year-old's current condition remains unclear at this time. The sailboat was part of the Miami Yacht Club's youth sailing program, but since the incident, the program has been suspended while authorities investigate. The U.S. Coast Guard previously stated the barge was supporting construction work in the Miami Beach area before the fatal collision. Capt. Frank Florio, Commander of Coast Guard Sector Miami said that the agency believes 'all of the girls were wearing life jackets' when the crash happened, based on interviews throughout the investigation. Co was a student at San Pedro Nolasco School in Vitacura, Santiago, who recently moved to the US, the school said in a memorial post about her. Her grieving father, Pil Jye Ko, told Local10 that Monday was his daughter's first day attending the sailing camp. 'I still remember when we dropped her off. She said, "See you later, mom and dad!",' Ko recalled as he cried. 'We hoped that this was all just a dream, or that a miracle would have happened,' he went on. 'That the hospital would call and say, "Your daughter is alive. She's alright." But no, that didn't happen. No, no, no. It's not what happened.' He said his late daughter was attending Nautilus Middle School in Miami Beach and that she was fluent in three languages - English, Spanish and Korean. She was also learning how to speak Japanese. 'She was the perfect daughter. She was perfect,' Ko continued. Yankelevich was the granddaughter of Cris Morena and Gustavo Yankelevich, two prominent Argentine producers. Her father, Tomas Yankelevich, is also a producer and director, while her mother, Sofia Reca, is an actress in Argentina. The family lived in Surfside, Florida. Yankelevich's grandmother called her 'my girl with wings, my happy and free little fairy,' in a now heartbreaking tribute she posted of her late granddaughter for her birthday in February. She added in Spanish that their 'moments together [were] filled with dancing [and] songs' and said her granddaughter embodied 'the sun, freedom and hugs.' One year prior, in another social media post, Morena called her granddaughter 'my cutest little girl in the world... My red heart, my everything.' A witness at the scene told WSVN that a crane on the barge 'completely destroyed the boat' that day. 'The boat just went under and I heard a girl shouting for help under the crane,' the witness recounted. Nine-year-old Enzo Pifer Eddy also told CBS News how 'all the kids went flying' in the aftermath. According to the Coast Guard's navigation rules, sailboats generally have the right of way over motorboats, but must yield the right of way to a vessel that is 'restricted in its ability to maneuver.' Determining whether a tugboat that was seen pushing the barge in the clash will now likely be a central focus for Coast Guard investigators. They said at a news conference they will also be questioning the captain of the barge as they noted that 'the area was safe for sailing' at the time. However, Miami Yacht Club member Katie Flood-Reiss told the Miami Herald that the sailboat's 19-year-old instructor would have had no chance of evading the barge in the bay. 'In those conditions, with almost no wind, it would have been impossible to turn that sailboat around quickly,' she explained. The investigation could take several months to complete for officials to determine what caused the deadly crash. Nashville hands over land beneath city to Elon Musk
Nashville is getting a serious makeover thanks to Tesla billionaire Elon Musk. Musk's The Boring Company has plans to build a futuristic underground tunnel in Tennessee that will transport passengers from the city center to the airport in just eight minutes using electric vehicles. But while the project has support from the state's federal lawmakers, local leaders aren't so sure. One representative called it a 'vanity project for the wealthy' and it has been dubbed the 'Music City Loop'. The tunnel will run 10 miles from the city center to the airport on Nashville's south-east corridor, with its entrance just steps from the airport. The privately funded project will supposedly shuttle Tennesseans between downtown and the airport in only eight minutes. That's a big saving in time from downtown to the airport, which takes about 30 minutes by taxi, rideshare, or bus. The company plans to use electric vehicles to connect city hotspots, similar to an already operating Boring system in Las Vegas. Musk and The Boring Company seemed to have the full support of Republican lawmakers at a press conference announcing the project on July 28. Republican Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said he was excited by the tunnel. 'They could have taken their next underground loop anywhere, but they saw something unique about Tennessee,' he said. 'The best part of all of it is it's 100 percent privately funded. There will be no cost to Tennessee taxpayers.' John Ray Clemens, chair of the Tennessee House Democratic Caucus, hammered the privately funded project as 'fiscally irresponsible and legally suspect'. 'No responsible executive would give away unrestricted and unlimited underground property rights to an unhinged billionaire, who Donald Trump doesn't even trust anymore, and grant him and his company exclusive access rights beneath our city and a monopoly to profit in perpetuity.' The project has yet to receive approval from the Metro Nashville Council or the mayor's office, and Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell was notably absent from the event. In a brief statement about the project, he said: 'We are aware of the state's conversations with The Boring Company, and we have a number of operational questions to understand the potential impacts on Metro and Nashvillians.' Yet, United States Senator Marsha Blackburn seemed to think the impact would be overwhelmingly positive. She posted on X that the company 'couldn't have picked a better new home for their state-of-the-art tunneling technology than Nashville'. She wrote: 'I look forward to seeing the tremendous impact of this investment in our city!' State Representative Aftyn Behn called the tunnel a 'privatization of public infrastructure,' noting that it was designed to benefit a select few 'not the people who actually live and work here'. In his press release about the 'Music City Loop' Behn wrote, 'It's a vanity project for the wealthy, and once again, the Lee administration is rolling out the red carpet for billionaires while working families are stuck in traffic.' 'We rank at the bottom in livability, and yet instead of investing in roads, schools, and transit that benefit everyday Tennesseans, they're floating billion-dollar boondoggles for the ultra-rich,' stated state Senator Heidi Campbell. The decision seems to be just as divisive among citizens as it is among local lawmakers. One local posted on Reddit afterwards: 'And the grift continues. This isn't a much-needed or desirable project. This is a grift meant to line the pockets of the world's richest person. The goal was never providing a decent or even acceptable transit service.' Another commented: 'Could've had a great light rail system and instead get this utter nonsense.' A third wrote: 'What a complete waste of money that could be going to build transit that's actually useful.' Regardless of the public's opinion, The Boring Company is ready to go full speed ahead. Construction will begin immediately following the approval process, according to the Tennessee state government. It could be operational as early as Fall 2026.

Latest Trump tariffs unlikely to budge, top negotiator says
Aug 3 (Reuters) - The tariffs U.S. President Donald Trump imposed last week on scores of countries are likely to stay in place rather than be cut as part of continuing negotiations, Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Sunday. Ahead of a Friday deadline, Trump set rates including a 35% duty on many goods from Canada, 50% for Brazil, 25% for India, 20% for Taiwan and 39% for Switzerland, according to a presidential executive order. In trade talks since Trump returned to office, the White House has lowered some rates from levels initially announced, including halving import duties set last week as part of a deal with the European Union. Greer told CBS's Face the Nation on Sunday, however, that this would not be the case on the most recent round of tariffs. "A lot of these are set rates pursuant to deals. Some of these deals are announced, some are not, others depend on the level of the trade deficit or surplus we may have with the country," he said. "These tariff rates are pretty much set." Greer also said recent trade talks with Beijing had been "very positive" and were focused on the supply of rare earth magnets and minerals. "We're focused on making sure that the flow of magnets from China to the United States and the- and the adjacent supply chain can flow as freely as it did before ... and I'd say we're about halfway there."
