New Novel, ‘From the Dictators' Shadows: A Family's Journey,' Offers an Immigrant's Story of Civil War, Resistance and Reinvention

Debut novel by Maritza Durán launches from Pegasus Publishers
What does it mean to lose a homeland—and to rebuild a life in its absence? Author Maritza Durán explores this in her debut novel " From the Dictators' Shadows: A Family's Journey.' A powerful story based on real events, Durán blends memoir and historical fiction, inviting readers into the world of a family caught between patriotism and persecution—celebrated as heroes of a young republic one day, labeled enemies of the state the next.
Through their story, Durán explores the emotional and generational impact of political violence, forced migration, and survival—with deep resonance for today's global crises.
'This novel is more than a family saga. It's a mirror held up to our current moment— a nation slides into authoritarianism, human rights erode, brothers and fathers disappear, and stories like these risk being silenced,' Durán says. 'This is not just a story of the past, it is an ongoing story of families like mine, seeking safety, freedom and dignity.'
A Family Fractured by Dictatorship
The Burgos Beltrán family's story begins in the late 1800s, as the island nation of Puerto Rey claims its independence. Born into the hopeful beginnings of a new republic, six spirited siblings come of age in a moment of promise and political possibility.
But when a violent dictatorship takes hold, the family is torn apart. The brothers stay behind to resist one of the most brutal regimes in Latin American history. The sisters flee to North America, where they face exile, grief, and reinvention as immigrants in New York City.
Durán lays bare the emotional toll of families forced to flee under threat of state-sanctioned violence—while honoring the strength it takes to begin again. From the Dictators' Shadows is an immigrant story of resilience, bravery and hope.
A Multigenerational Tale Told by Women
Told through the voices of three women reflecting on their family's legacy, the novel spans revolution, failed coups, devastating parental loss, political assassination, mental illness, and migration. Yet amid the hardship, it illuminates the quiet triumph of rebuilding lives across oceans.
In the U.S., the Burgos Beltrán sisters become more than survivors—they become role models. As entrepreneurs, mothers, and mentors, their story is a testament to the overlooked strength and contribution of immigrant women in America.
Why This Story Matters Now
'From the Dictators' Shadows' is a story told in fiction and stitched together with historical truths. It represents the experience of Durán's family and many families throughout Latin America who continue to live through violent political turmoil.
Around the world—and here in the U.S.—thousands of immigrants, many fleeing regimes like the one that shadows this story, continue to face detention, discrimination, and danger in the very places they hoped would protect them.
This novel gives voice to those who have been assassinated, silenced, or displaced by corrupt governments—and all those who stay behind to resist. It reminds us that migration is not just a policy issue—it is a deeply human story of love, loss, courage, and dignity.
'From the Dictators' Shadows' is available to order now on Bookshop.org, Barnes & Noble and Amazon. For more information about Maritza Durán and her debut novel, visit fromthedictatorsshadows.com.

CNN Reports From Latin America in 'Ecuador: The Narco Superhighway'

August 4th, 2025 EPISODE PREMIERES SUNDAY, AUGUST 10 AT 9PM ET/PT NEW YORK, NY – (August 4, 2025) – The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper , a five-time Emmy® Award-winning CNN Original, returns with an immersive dispatch from inside the brutal cocaine trafficking system which has made Ecuador the deadliest country in Latin America. 'Ecuador: The Narco Superhighway' with CNN Senior National Correspondent David Culver premieres Sunday, August 10 at 9pm ET/PT on CNN. Since 2018, Ecuador's homicide rate has surged by 580%, with 2025 on track to be Ecuador's deadliest year on record. With roughly 70% of the world's cocaine moving through Ecuador, gangs are at war for control of an underground global economy worth tens of billions of dollars a year. In 'Ecuador: The Narco Superhighway,' Culver goes deep inside a system that pulls in the poor, empowers the brutal and protects the powerful, all to indulge the habit of a global addiction with local Ecuadorians caught in the undertow. 'We spent more than two weeks in fishing villages, border towns, major cities and ports… places where the violence isn't just a headline, it's part of daily life. We met grieving families, fishermen pulled into the trade, even gang members who claim they had no other option but to commit horrific acts, which they openly admit to,' said Culver. 'This isn't just a story about drugs. It's about how power, poverty, and global demand collide in Ecuador.' From coastal villages and jungle borderlands to banana plantations and bustling ports, and even to the Galapagos islands, Culver follows the chain of smuggling, extortion and violence. He rides along with Ecuador's navy as they train to chase down drug runners off the vast Pacific coast and speaks with a high-ranking gang commander reflecting on the impact of his trade on his community. The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper is a collection of unique and immersive single subject, one-hour episodes from CNN's Emmy® and Peabody Award-winning longform storytelling team showcasing character-driven stories, special interviews, and investigative deep dives featuring reporting from CNN's anchors and correspondents . The series is executive produced by Susan Chun. Cinemark is opening 6 new panoramic, 270-degree movie theaters in 2025, and 14 more next year. Is one coming near you?

Some good news for moviegoers: Cinemark announced on Wednesday it plans to add 18 new panoramic, 270-degree ScreenX movie theaters in the U.S., with six slated to open in 2025, and the remaining next year. Exclusive: Google is indexing ChatGPT conversations, potentially exposing sensitive user data Emotionally intelligent people use the 2-week rule to motivate themselves and reach their biggest goals Middle management is dead The deal expands Cinemark's existing partnership with South Korea-based CJ 4DPlex to a total number of 26 Cinemark theaters. It will also add two more theaters in Latin America in 2026, introducing ScreenX to that region's audiences for the first time. The two companies first partnered in 2022, with the launch of their initial ScreenX locations in California and Texas. 'That's been a big goal for us, to get as many theaters open for the last part of the year for 'Wicked: For Good' and, of course, 'Avatar: Fire and Ash,' which is such a seminal movie for all of the industry,' Don Savant, CEO of CJ 4DPlex Americas, told CNBC. ScreenX creates a dynamic, 270-degree panoramic field of view by extending movie screens onto the left and right walls of the auditorium, filling the audience's peripheral vision. Fast Company reached out to Cinemark for a list of new locations, but it said it is unable to share further information at this time, as it is 'currently in a quiet period before reporting company earnings.' Movie theater attendance has fallen since the pandemic, with audience habits shifting to streaming home entertainment. According to Octane Seating, 63% of Americans now watch movies at home, as more people turn to their smartphones and other digital devices to consume movies and video instead of a trip to the multiplex. In May, Cinemark reported financial results for the first quarter of 2025 ended March 31, including a total revenue of $541 million, which was a decrease of 6.6% from $579 million for the same quarter of the previous year. It also reported a net loss of $39 million, or 32 cents per share, compared to a net income of $25 million and earnings per share of 19 cents in the same quarter of 2024. Cinemark will report second-quarter earnings results on August 1. The company has a current market capitalization of $3.1 billion.
