Israel evacuates most diplomatic staff from UAE amid heightened security threats

India Today21 hours ago
Israel has ordered the evacuation of the majority of its diplomatic mission staff and their families from the United Arab Emirates, following the National Security Council's (NSC) escalation of travel warnings for Israelis residing in the Gulf state. The NSC cited intelligence that terrorist groups, including Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, and global jihadist factions, are stepping up efforts to target Israeli and Jewish individuals in the UAE, particularly around Jewish holidays and weekends. "We are emphasizing this travel warning given our understanding that terrorist organizations (the Iranians, Hamas, Hezbollah and Global Jihad) are increasing their efforts to harm Israel", the NSC said in a statement.advertisementREGIONAL TENSIONSIsraeli officials attribute the elevated threat to recent military operations against Iran and to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with concerns that these factors may drive retaliatory attacks. Security authorities believe that anti-Israel incitement and the aftermath of the offensive on Iran have increased risks for Israeli nationals and representatives abroad.
The UAE's Israeli and Jewish community has expanded and become more prominent since the two countries normalised relations in 2020 through the US- brokered Abraham Accords. This marked the first such agreement between Israel and a Gulf Arab state.Israeli and UAE foreign ministries had not responded to requests for comment regarding the evacuation order.Prior to this, the UAE did not officially recognise Israel, with diplomatic contacts largely informal and limited. The agreement brought a historic normalization of ties, leading to the exchange of ambassadors, opening of embassies, and cooperation in various sectors including trade, tourism, and security. The UAE's Israeli and Jewish community has since grown more visible and active. However, the relationship exists amid regional tensions, especially related to Iran and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.ADDITIONAL CONCERNSThe move comes after the rare murder of an Israeli-Moldovan rabbi in the UAE last November, for which three individuals were sentenced to death in March, further highlighting security sensitivities for Israelis in the Gulf state. Despite being viewed as one of the safest countries in the Middle East, recent threats linked to these tensions have heightened security concerns for Israeli nationals and diplomats in the UAE.- EndsWith inputs from Reuters Must Watch

‘UP saw dismantling of criminal network under Yogi in 8 years'

Lucknow: Highlighting the "immense changes" in law and order in the state since the BJP came to power in 2017, a govt spokesperson outlined the condition of Uttar Pradesh before 2017 and now. Following CM Yogi Adityanath's rise to power, the administration initiated a series of decisive actions to dismantle the criminal network that had taken root. Since the BJP came to power, there was a surge in police action against gangsters, seizure of illegal properties, and court trials were fast-tracked. There was a crackdown on unlawful religious conversions and the drug mafia. This, said the official, saw a sharp decline in criminal activity. "Under its zero-tolerance policy on crime, the state govt over the past eight years has seen over 240 dangerous criminals being killed in police encounters. During this time, the police carried out more than 15,000 encounters, arresting over 30,000 criminals. More than 9,000 criminals were injured in these operations," said the official. The govt cracked down on illegal properties of criminals, which broke the backbone of the mafia network and boosted public trust in the govt. As per govt data, illegal assets worth more than Rs 14,200 crore were seized or destroyed over the past eight years. Under 'Operation Conviction', about 1 lakh criminals have been convicted so far, which includes nearly 10,000 criminals sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes like rape, murder, and organised crime. Another 68 criminals have been sentenced to death. On average, courts are resolving 143 cases daily and punishing 187 criminals each day thanks to strong legal efforts, the official added. To crack down on the illegal drug trade, the govt has carried out large-scale operations, which include raids on fake liquor factories and inter-state mafia networks. Illegal liquor has been destroyed, and thousands of smugglers were arrested. An Anti-Narcotics Task Force was also set up, which has helped in the recovery of illegal drugs worth over Rs 2,737 crore and the registration of more than 30,000 cases. The govt went all out against illegal conversions, passing the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021, under which hundreds of people have been arrested, and several organised conversion rackets have been busted, claimed the official, citing the recent crackdown on Jalaluddin alias Changur, a key accused in an illegal religious conversion network. The state govt's policy, which the CM reiterates publicly at every occasion, is that a criminal will either be in jail in UP or out of the state.

India rejects UK report alleging ‘transnational repression'

India Friday categorically rejected as 'baseless' a British parliamentary report that named it among countries engaged in 'transnational repression' in the UK. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the allegations stemmed from 'unverified' and 'dubious sources' predominantly linked to proscribed entities and individuals. 'We have seen the references to India in the report and categorically reject these baseless allegations,' said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. 'These claims stem from unverified and dubious sources, predominantly linked to proscribed entities and individuals with a clear, documented history of anti-India hostility,' he said. Jaiswal said the 'deliberate reliance on discredited sources calls into question the credibility of the report itself'. The report made by the British Parliament's Joint Committee on Human Rights listed India along with China, Egypt, Eritrea, Iran, Pakistan, Russia, Bahrain, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates as countries allegedly engaging in 'transnational repression' in the UK. The report titled 'Transnational repression in the UK' was made public on July 30. Some of the details related to India cited in the report were provided by Sikhs for Justice, a pro-Khalistan organisation banned in India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and other UK-based Sikh groups.

Israel intercepts Huthi missile fired from Yemen

The Israeli military said it intercepted a missile fired from Yemen on Friday, which the Iran-backed Huthi rebels said they had launched. Protesters, predominantly Houthi supporters, demonstrate in solidarity with Palestinians in Sanaa, Yemen, on August 1, 2025.(Reuters) "Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, a missile that was launched from Yemen was intercepted," the Israeli military said. The Huthis targeted Israel's Ben Gurion airport "using a 'Palestine 2' hypersonic ballistic missile", their military spokesman Yahya Saree said in a video statement. The rebels have launched repeated missile and drone attacks against Israel since their Palestinian ally Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel sparked the Gaza war. The Huthis, who say they are acting in support of the Palestinians, paused their attacks during a two-month ceasefire in Gaza that ended in March, but renewed them after Israel resumed major operations. Israel has carried out several retaliatory strikes in Yemen, targeting Huthi-held ports and the airport in the rebel-held capital Sanaa.
