‘Have asked parents to take back abandoned baby: Police
The baby was discovered around 6.30am on Saturday on the footpath outside Swapnalay girls' orphanage at Moraj Residency in Takka colony. A handwritten note in English, placed in the basket she was found in, said her parents were abandoning her due to their 'mental and financial' situation.
The discovery triggered widespread concern and Panvel MLA Prashant Thakur said on Saturday that all necessary steps would be taken to ensure the child's safety and secure her future.
During investigation, unit central unit-II of the Panvel crime branch found footage from a CCTV camera installed along the road opposite the orphanage which showed a burqa-clad woman abandoning the baby at the spot in the early hours on Saturday, said police.
'The footage showed a burqa-clad woman alighting from a car with a basket at 2.42 am. The woman crossed the road and placed the basket with the baby near the orphanage, then went back to the car. The car left the spot by 2.44am as another vehicle passed by,' said a police officer who requested anonymity.
Assistant commissioner of police (crime) Ajay Landge said the baby's parents were traced based on CCTV footage of the car and other technical leads.
'The mother and father are 23 and 24 years old, respectively. Both are educated, from well-to-do families and live in Bhiwandi,' said Landge.
Senior police inspector Nitin Thakare from Panvel city police station said they interrogated both parents on Sunday.
'The couple said they had married secretly last year and since their families didn't know about it, they could not keep the child. We have let off with a warning and asked them to take back the child after due process,' said Thakare.
The baby is currently under the CWC's custody at Vatsalya Punarvikas Kendra, a rehabilitation centre in Alibaug.

Despite the promise of providing free and compulsory education to all children between the ages of 6 and 14 years in government schools, some Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) in the State have been found charging fees for students ranging from ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 per annum. Parents of KPS at K.R. Pet in Mandya district have alleged that the school is charging students in English medium section as per the decision of the School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC). Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) of K.R. Pet, H.T. Manju, is the Chairman of the SDMC. Parents and a member of the SDMC of the school have complained to the Block Education Officer (BEO) of the K.R. Pet taluk, but no action has been taken even after a month, they alleged. The State government started KPS across the State from 2018-19 to teach from pre-primary to class 12 under one roof. These schools offer bilingual classes, including English medium, from the pre-primary section. The governmenthas issued an order and framed separate regulations for the SDMCs of KPS . Accordingly, it has been suggested to form an SDMC consisting of a total of 16 parents in schools with more than 1,023 children. This SDMC is chaired by the local MLA. Several sub-committees have been formed for the development of the school, and the SDMC can accept donations from the public and donors and carry out the development of the school. Responding to the issue, K.V. Trilokchandra, Commissioner of Public Instruction, said, 'It is completely against the rules to charge annual fees from government school children. I have instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Mandya district to investigate this issue and submit a report. Based on the report, action will be taken against the culprits.' Violation of rules However, the SDMC of the KPS in K.R. Pet held a meeting and took a decision to collect fees from the children, and it was found that the fees were being collected illegally every year. While some students were given receipts in the name of the schools, some receipts were in the name of a private coaching centre. Some students were also asked to deposit the fees directly into the joint bank accounts of the school principal and the SDMC chairman. 'As per the Right to Education Act-2009, free and compulsory education should be provided to children between the ages of 6 and 14 in all government schools. However, in our KPS, a fee of ₹3,600 has been collected for LKG students, ₹2,600 from UKG students and ₹5,300 for English medium students from classes 1 to 7,' alleged a parent. Parents allege that many KPS in the Mandya district have also charged annual fees to children. 'The SDMC has no right to fix fees in the government schools. Most of the children studying in government schools are economically and socially backward, and they are being deprived of education. Even after complaining to the BEO about this, no action has been taken. the government should immediately conduct an investigation and take legal action against the SDMCs that are collecting fees from school children,' urged another parent. Huge demand Speaking to The Hindu, Puligeraiah, in-charge principal of the school in K.R. Pete, said, 'The previous principal retired from service on June 30, 2025, and I have been working as the in-charge principal since July 1. So, I do not know much about the issue. There are a total of 2,384 children in our school. We have a limitation of only 30 children to be admitted for the LKG English medium section. However, due to the huge demand, additional sections have been started. Additional teachers and staff have been recruited for this. In this context, the decision to charge fees from the children may have been taken.'

A study by the Crimes Against Children Research Centre found that 1 in 10 children will experience sexual misconduct by a school employee at some point during their school career. There were over 500 cases of teacher misconduct between 2014 and 2019. Teachers who engage in such acts frequently misuse their position of power to abuse students through emotional manipulation, gaslighting and coercion. Mumbais Shame: Woman Teacher Accused of Drugging, Assaulting 16-year-Old Teen In 5-Star Hotels
MUMBAI: A 40-year-old woman English teacher from an elite school in Mumbai has been arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old male student multiple times over several months, officials said. According to Mumbai Police, the teacher, who is married and has children, came into close contact with the student while organising a dance group for the school's annual function in December 2023. During this period, the student reportedly developed an emotional attachment to her. In January 2024, the teacher allegedly proposed a sexual relationship. When the boy resisted and began avoiding her, she reportedly involved a female friend -- not affiliated with the school -- to persuade him. The friend, who has also been booked, allegedly told the boy that relationships between older women and teenagers were "common" these days and claimed that he and the teacher were "made for each other." Following this, the student agreed to meet the teacher. She allegedly took him to a secluded location, forcibly removed his clothes, and sexually assaulted him. As the boy began to experience anxiety in the following days, she allegedly provided him with anti-anxiety medication. The car, which was used to transport the boy, has since been seized by police. Investigators say the accused made the student consume alcohol before each assault and later took him to several five-star hotels in south Mumbai and near the airport, where further sexual encounters reportedly occurred. The abuse continued for several months. The student's family began noticing changes in his behaviour and eventually confronted him. He then revealed the details of the abuse. Hoping the matter would end after he completed his studies, the family initially chose not to report it. He graduated from the school earlier this year. However, matters escalated when the teacher allegedly tried to contact the boy again through a member of his household staff, prompting the family to file a complaint with the police. The Dadar police have registered a case under Sections 123, 351(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the POCSO Act. Both the teacher and her friend have been arrested and produced in court. The teacher has been sent to police custody.
