Oil states mull crackdown on idle wells
Texas and Oklahoma's legislatures for the first time could create restrictions on how long wells can be inactive or idled before operators must plug them. In New Mexico, the state's oil and gas regulator is proposing new rules that would require operators to pay more in insurance to cover the cost of plugging abandoned wells.
The new rules are part of broader efforts to tackle the tens of thousands of old oil and gas wells that are left unplugged and without an owner that can properly seal them shut. Wells left inactive for years can contaminate ground and surface water and spew planet-warming methane out of their wellheads.

Once an oil and gas well is orphaned, any contamination and leftover equipment becomes a government — and taxpayer — liability.

At least 5 displaced after vacant building fire damages neighboring structure, Dallas Fire-Rescue says
At least five people are displaced after a fire at a vacant two-story building damaged a neighboring structure, Dallas Fire-Rescue said Saturday morning. DFR said just after 6 a.m., crews were called to a building fire at the intersection of N. Marsalis Avenue and Comal Street. DFW said a second alarm was immediately requested, followed by a third alarm, leading to between 65 to 70 firefighters being called to the scene. Crews worked for over two hours before extinguishing the blaze, during which a neighboring residential building received exposure damage, officials said. Though no injuries were reported, DFR said at least five residents from the neighboring residence required assistance from the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.

Jersey trawling area limited from September 2026
More than one fifth of the island's territorial waters will be designated as marine protected areas and off limits to trawling and dredging from September 2026, the government has confirmed. Jersey politicians voted unanimously for the Marine Spatial Plan in October, which included a pledge to increase the area of protected waters from 6.5% to 23%. Marine protected areas prohibit mobile gear fishing, which includes trawling and dredging, to stop damage to habitats and species. Jersey's government said it will work with licensed fishermen in Jersey and France to support adjustment to the new rules. A timeline for implementing the plan released by the infrastructure and environment committee also shows part of Les Sauvages reef will be off limits to all fishing. Only commercially licensed vessels will be prohibited from fishing in the protected areas. Potting, netting, rod and line fishing and all recreational activities are unaffected by the changes.
