Warning to UK households with bird feeders in gardens

People who feed pigeons in their garden have been warned of the risks
UK households with bird feeders in their gardens have been warned by wildlife experts to stop using them as they attract pigeons. These birds eat all of the food very quickly, meaning there is nothing left for other birds and it also puts off smaller species from visiting your bird feeder as they are intimidated by the pigeons.
Pigeons raiding the bird feeder means gardeners will have to constantly refill too. But there is a way to deter pigeons allowing the smaller birds to feast on the food without being terrorised by the larger birds. Richard Green, wildlife expert from Kennedy Wild Bird Food & Pet Supplies, advises households to put seed trays into their feeders. This stops seeds falling onto the ground and wasted and is what attracts the pigeons in the first place.

According to Richard, putting a cage around your feeders makes it easier for smaller wildlife to access the seeds and also keep larger birds, like pigeons, out.

People can also chose to use pigeon-proof designed feeders which are often angled so that the birds struggle to get a good grip, according to the Mirror.
Mr Green explains: 'Fallen seed is a major attraction for pigeons and other pests, such as rats.
Adding seed catchers beneath feeders helps stop seeds from reaching the ground. It's also important to regularly clean up any remaining food to keep your garden tidy and free from unwanted visitors.

'Feeders designed to keep pigeons away often feature vertical or angled surfaces that pigeons struggle to grip. Pigeons are not as agile as smaller birds, so creating feeding spaces with uneven or narrow perches can make a big difference in keeping them at bay.'

Another option to prevent pigeons stealing all the food from other birds is to put out things like nyjer seed, suet balls or sunflower hearts, as these are less appealing to them so it gives smaller birds a better chance to enjoy the food on offer.
Of course, if you want to keep feeding pigeons in your garden, without excluding smaller birds, it's advised that you set up separate feeding areas.
Mr Green adds: 'Ground feeders with high-cereal seed mixes are ideal for pigeons, while smaller, more protected feeders can be reserved for smaller species. This allows all birds to enjoy your garden without competing for food.'

Hanging feeders are a popular way to keep birds fed, however, they aren't ideal for all species. The suspended feeding system is difficult for blackbirds, dunnocks and robins to cling to.
In order to make sure these birds are happily fed, it's much better to use a flat surface to lay out suet or seeds.
This can be a bird table, an open stretch of shorn grass, or a patio area.
Simply sprinkle the food out and watch as your feathery guests hop out to peck up the food in peace.

Prince Harry labelled 'extremely disloyal' to family and may not be forgiven by key Royal

A Royal commentator recently claimed that Harry should have reached out to one major player in the family. Speculation about potential peace negotiations between Prince Harry and King Charles has intensified following reports that senior advisers to both royals were seen at a London meeting. ‌ And a Royal commentator has offered their perspective on suggestions that one prominent Royal could heal the family divide. Earlier this week, a Royal source suggested that Harry ought to have turned to his aunt, Princess Anne, during the difficult period that ultimately saw Harry and Meghan step back from Royal duties and move to California. ‌ The source, described as a confidant of the princess who similarly lived in the shadow of her brother King Charles, revealed these thoughts emerged following the publication of Prince Harry's explosive memoir Spare. ‌ However, despite the source's convictions, former BBC Royal correspondent Jennie Bond reckons it's now too late for the Duke of Sussex to seek counsel from the Princess Royal or rely on her to repair the fractured bond between himself and his father. Speaking exclusively to our sister title the Mirror, Ms Bond claimed Harry had been "extremely disloyal" to the Firm, which wouldn't be looked on well by Anne. The source reportedly told the Sunday Times: "He really ought to talk to Princess Anne. She often talked about how, as children, she was treated so differently from Charles. ‌ "She was second to him and kicked further down the line of succession as a woman, but she forged her own path. In her twenties, she was bolshy and upset about a lot of things, but she came through that. "He should talk to her about her experiences. She is shrewd. She could tell him a lot about what she went through." ‌ However, Jennie suggests that the opportunity for Anne to offer Harry guidance - both on managing life as a 'spare' and mending his fractured ties with the Royal family - may now have slipped away. Ms Bond said: "Yes, Anne would have been the perfect person to offer advice and guidance, but sadly, this is no longer relevant as Harry has made it quite clear that he has no desire to return to life as a working royal. ‌ "She could have told her nephew that 'playing second fiddle' is the wrong way to look at his status. Instead, as she has shown, the second born can be an invaluable support to the institution of monarchy, and a vital friend, confidant and wingman/woman to the monarch. "She could have explained that they are a team, a firm, working together to keep the monarchy relevant and using their platform to help charities and communities." Ms Bond further suggested that Anne might be reluctant to wade into the ongoing tensions between Harry and Charles, whilst also questioning whether the Princess Royal fully grasps the depth of the family divide. ‌ She said: "It may be that the King has discussed his family troubles with Anne, but I rather doubt that she would want to get involved. To Anne, loyalty is paramount, and I suspect she feels that Harry has been extremely disloyal to his father, his brother and the monarchy. She might well find that hard to forgive." Speculation about a possible Royal rapprochement began to circulate earlier this month following a meeting between Harry's chief communications officer and Liam Maguire, who oversees Harry and Meghan's UK public relations, with the King's communications secretary Tobyn Andreae. The rendezvous took place at the Royal Over-Seas League, a private members' club conveniently located near Clarence House, which is Charles' London home. The initiator of the meeting remains unknown, but insiders have characterised the encounter as laid-back, with casual drinks aimed at establishing a line of dialogue between the two parties. Prince Harry's devastating loss in royal rift exposed as Meghan 'holds the cards'

Prince Harry's bitter rift with his family has left him with a devastated loss, according to a royal expert, who claims the Duke of Sussex has lost the support of one key royal A Royal expert has suggested that Prince Harry's ongoing feud with his Royal relatives, particularly his father King Charles and brother Prince William, has highlighted a devastating loss for the Duke of Sussex. The Duke has been at odds with his family, reportedly no longer on speaking terms with them. ‌ The dispute was intensified by Harry's revealing memoir, 'Spare', in which he criticised his father and brother and shared his experiences of feeling overshadowed by William, who is now the heir to the throne and future King. Princess Anne, known for her dedicated service to the monarchy, has also found herself second behind her brother, the King. ‌ Recent reports have proposed that Harry could have benefited from seeking advice from his aunt about being the 'spare'. Former BBC Royal correspondent Jennie Bond believes that Princess Anne could have shown Harry what he has lost by stepping away from Royal duties. ‌ Speaking to the Mirror, she said: "Yes, Anne would have been the perfect person to offer advice and guidance, but, sadly, this is no longer relevant as Harry has made it quite clear that he has no desire to return to life as a working royal." She added: "She could have told her nephew that 'playing second fiddle' is the wrong way to look at his status. Instead, as she has shown, the second-born can be an invaluable support to the institution of monarchy, and a vital friend, confidant and wingman/woman to the monarch.", reports the Mirror. "She could have explained that they are a team - a firm - working together to keep the monarchy relevant and using their platform to help charities and communities." ‌ However, with Harry disclosing earlier this year that the King is no longer in contact with him, Jennie doesn't think that the Princess Royal would wish to become involved in any potential peace negotiations. She said: "It may be that the King has discussed his family troubles with Anne, but I rather doubt that she would want to get involved. "To Anne, loyalty is paramount, and I suspect she feels that Harry has been extremely disloyal to his father, his brother and the monarchy. She might well find that hard to forgive." ‌ Meanwhile, reports have also indicated that Harry and wife, Meghan Markle, have suffered a setback regarding their multi-million pound Netflix agreement. The Sussexes are understood to have secured a five-year contract worth approximately $100million in September 2020 with the streaming service to create various content. ‌ Nevertheless, aside from their initial project - their contentious documentary series Harry and Meghan - their subsequent programmes on the platform haven't replicated its popularity. Sources have now claimed the Netflix agreement won't be extended when it concludes, with one insider telling PEOPLE magazine it represents a wider change in the streamer's commercial approach. Jennie reckons this development could also prove more challenging for Harry, particularly regarding potentially filling the shortfall in their income. She further commented: "Securing a five-year contract was quite an achievement - and was undoubtedly extremely lucrative. For most people, that sort of money would set them up for life. "But Montecito is luxurious and expensive. So they will have to find other streams of income. That's going to be harder for Harry than Meghan, who has every chance of making a lot of money as an influencer."

UK hotspot could ban 'irresponsible' motorhomes and campervans after outcry

The city's green space is a popular spot for motorhome and campervan owners - but locals and a new activist group is demanding action and calling for them to be banned. Motorhomes and campervans are set to face a massive setback as a popular hotspot is on the brink of banning vehicle parking. A petition demanding an end to vehicle dwelling has garnered over 8,000 signatures. The activist group"Protect the Downs" made their case at a Bristol City Council meeting, advocating for the removal of larger vehicles from the historic green space. ‌ In a statement shared with the BBC, the newly formed Protect the Downs group stated its aim to "hold Bristol City Council accountable for enforcing laws, restrictions and bylaws", which ensure the Downs remains available for "legitimate public use". ‌ The group expressed concerns about "irresponsible driving and obstructive parking" by van dwellers posing a threat to pedestrians, health and safety risks due to "overcrowded, unsanitary and dangerous conditions" and environmental damage caused by litter and human waste, reports Birmingham Live. ‌ "We've come together because we love the Downs, but this wonderful green space relied on by residents across Bristol is being misused and that's putting people in real danger," said chair Tony Nelson "Children, the elderly, council workers and even emergency responders are at risk, and the environmental damage is heartbreaking." ‌ Amy Dickson, 35, has been residing on the downs since last year. She moved into a van after she was evicted from a series of rentals in the city: "I've always been in minimum wage jobs. My family don't have any money. I can't get a guarantor. I just can't afford to rent any more." The council has pledged to establish 250 temporary pitches on land earmarked for development by the end of the year. "We've all parked together and it is really nice," she said. "It is awful to receive so much hate." She continued: "We have jobs here.. that is talking out of total privilege. It is so ignorant. "Cracking down on one location in the absence of better alternatives, just means people will move somewhere else," Barry Parsons, the Green chair of the housing committee, said. "People living in vehicles are fellow residents of Bristol and we have just as much responsibility to support them as anybody else."
