But it was Fran Cosgrave - who at the time was a former bodyguard of boyband Westlife - and TV presenter Jayne Middlemiss who won the show.
Now two decades on Fran, 47, looks very different from his time in the luxury Fiji villa in a new social media snap.
Before heading into the villa he dated Natasha Hamilton from 2001 until 2002, and the former couple share son Josh, 21.
But Fran made the decision to quit fame and lives mostly out of the spotlight these days.
He made the switch from TV to music and is a producer and DJ for house scene trio the Futuristic Polar Bears.
Fran founded the group and they've been on several tours playing gigs and making appearances at nightclubs all over the world.
Speaking to Jennifer Zamparelli on RTE 2FM, he said: "You can't take it [fame] too seriously because it's gone as quick as it comes.
"As it came towards 2009, things just started to spin out of control a bit, as it does. I was kind of finished with the whole celebrity thing.
"I started saying, 'no' to loads of programmes and I just wasn't interested in it.
"My manager, rightly so, was like, 'Mate why won't you do any of these things?' I was just like, 'I'm not there anymore.'"
Love Island USA's Vanna flaunts curves in sexy low-cut dress as she dumps Ace - but fans 'can't get over' his reaction
Celebrity Love Island returned for a second series in 2006, this time starring the likes of Eternal singer and Loose Women star Kelle Bryan and Boyzone's Shane Lynch.
But it was models Bianca Gascoigne and Calum Best who won the final series ahead of its cancellation.

Ben, 34, "couldn't keep his hands off" the actress, who has been in Utopia, Doctor Who, and Locke & Key among other dramas. Ben, who played Peter Beale in EastEnders from 2013 to 2015, was "trying to kiss her at almost any opportunity," an insider said. Thousands of revellers gathered in Hyde Park, central London, to watch Sabrina Carpenter, who is currently on a world tour. The 26-year-old singer did two gigs in Hyde Park - one on Saturday and another on Sunday. Ben, who since leaving EastEnders, has been in X-Men: Apocalypse and was Queen drummer Roger Taylor 2018's Bohemian Rhapsody, appeared to enjoy Emilia's company at the event. The source said: "Ben couldn't keep his hands off her and was trying to kiss her at almost any opportunity. She didn't seem to object and was all smiles." Inside Soap Awards 2025 nominations in full as major category returns after six years Emilia, the 23-year-old daughter of singer Aled Jones, starred in 2021 film Coda, playing the child of deaf parents. The performer, who grew up in Barnes, southwest London, received a BAFTA nomination for this portrayal. It is unclear how long she and Ben, born in Bournemouth, Dorset, have been dating. However, it is Emilia was previously in a relationship with Irish Eurovision star Conor O'Donohoe. Ben, meanwhile, dated House of the Dragon actresses Olivia Cooke in 2020 followed by fellow EastEnder Jessica Plummer in 2021. They split in March 2023 after "growing apart," it is said. Ben had told reporters he decided to leave the soap so he did not regret "not trying for his dreams". He has, indeed, since forged work in films, including X-Men: Apocalypse, which received mixed reviews. Speaking in May 2016, Ben said: "I just left really. It's one of those things you've got to just get out there to do otherwise I might find myself waking up in 10 years wondering what could have been." His character, Peter, has been played by several actors since his arrival as a baby in 1993. Thomas Law portrayed Peter in his teenage years before Ben was introduced. Thomas, who has also been in The Bay on ITV, now has the role again, returning in 2023 after a 13-year absence.

Tim Tebow and Miss Universe wife welcome first child together... and reveal heartwarming story behind baby's name
Tim Tebow and his Miss Universe wife have welcomed their first child together. The 37-year-old college football icon and his model wife Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters announced the news with an emotional post on Instagram on Monday. The couple shared a series of black-and-white photos of themselves in the hospital alongside their new daughter. The caption read: 'Our daughter is here! We couldn't be more grateful for the blessing and gift of this new little life. 'We're so grateful to the whole medical team that assisted us in the best way possible during my labor and delivery. From our doctor to our nurses and all the hospital staff — we are so grateful and thankful for you. 'To my sweet friend @hannahjanoe thank you for capturing one of the most special moments of our lives so perfectly. 'Thank you to everyone who's been praying with us over her arrival. We are so incredibly thankful for all of the love and support we've felt. 'We can't wait to share her name with you soon'. However, it didn't take long for that announcement. Just hours later, the couple returned to Instagram to share a joint post which revealed their daughter's name. The post read: 'Meet our daughter, Daphne Reign Tebow. 'Daphne is a name that's been close to my heart since I was a little girl. I never got to meet my mom's mother, but her sister, Daphne, stepped in as a grandma figure to me. 'And Reign… it's a name that holds so much meaning. But more than anything, her name reminds us that when you're adopted into God's family, you become a child of the King. You were made to rule and reign—not in power, but in purpose, love, and identity. 'So here she is — our daughter. Our answered prayer. Daphne Reign Tebow — created in the image of God. Royalty as His princess. Our biggest prayer over her is to reign in God's purpose for her life'. The couple first announced the news that they were expecting a child back in January in a joint Instagram post. The birth of their daughter comes five years after the couple got married At the time, the couple wrote: 'We're over the moon to step into parenthood together'. Tebow and wife married in 2020 and are celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary on January 20. After brief stints with Denver Broncos and New York Jets, the Philippines-born star Tebow was only used in the offseason or as a practice squad member by New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars before being released by the latter in 2021. He has also tried his hand in professional baseball in recent years, signing a minor league baseball contract with the New York Mets in 2016 and playing outfield for the organization for five years.
