Amazon blasted for 'unintentional' move on Independent Bookstore Day

Daily Mail26-04-2025
Amazon has been slammed by local book sellers for hosting its second annual book sale at the same time as Independent Bookstore Day's 12th celebration.
Amazon's book sale began on April 23 and is set to last through to April 28, while Independent Bookstore Day on April 26 has been an annual tradition on the last Saturday in April for more than a decade.
The coinciding dates have irked independent sellers, who have described the move as 'cruel.'
'It's cynical, manipulative, and cruel - and for what? Amazon has already put half the bookstores in the country out of business, controlling over 60 percent of the market and selling far more books than all indie bookstores combined,' Andy Hunter, founder of Bookshop.org, said.
Independent Bookstore Day is organized by the American Booksellers Association and considered the one of the biggest days of the year for local booksellers.
Amazon, which announced the book sale on April 15, claimed in a statement to Vulture that the 'overlap was unintentional.'
'The dates for our sale were set this year to accommodate additional participating countries,' the statement said.
Amazon did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com's request for comment.
The coinciding dates have irked independent sellers, who have described the move as 'cruel.' 'It's cynical, manipulative, and cruel - and for what? Amazon has already put half the bookstores in the country out of business...' said Andy Hunter
However, many indie book sellers believe that the move had far more sinister intentions.
James Webster, who is opening Recluse Books in Texas with his wife, told Vulture: 'I'm sure if you were to reach out to Marlboro, they would tell you that it's just a coincidence that the heaviest cigarette smokers get cancer.'
'At best it's insensitive and at worst it seems like a tactic to hurt small businesses,' Allison Hill, CEO of the American Booksellers Association, said.
Fatuma Hydara, owner of Tuma's Books in New York, told the outlet: 'Independent Bookstore Day happens the same weekend every year. There's no way their people didn't know this day was coming.'
'I don't believe that it's true at all. And if it is true, that's really silly of them, and they're not nearly as impressive as they think.'
Kelsey Black of the Book Burrow near Austin, Texas, said: 'I just rolled my eyes and thought, "Of course they did." We can't even have one day where it's just us - Amazon has to swoop in.'
The overlap of events comes at a cost for the independent bookstores, considering Amazon's size and ability to sell books with over a 50 percent markdown.
Many stores across the US celebrated the event, nonetheless, including treasure hunts for prizes, cupcakes, pop up stores, and deals and sales throughout the day.
Kelly Jo in Illinois wrote on Facebook: 'Tomorrow is Independent Bookstore Day. And shocker - Amazon's "big annual book sale" magically lands on the same weekend. It's not a coincidence. It's a strategy.'
'This isn't about books. It's about every local shop, salon, café, and small business fighting to survive while giants rig the game.'
Another book enthusiast, Briana Lindquist, wrote: 'This year, Amazon decided to hold a big sale that overlaps with Independent Bookstore Day. Help me keep my favorite places alive by stopping in a bookstore today instead of placing an order online!'
Maura Cheeks of Liz's Book Bar in Brooklyn, NYC, however, said she was hopeful that customers would choose to support the local stores.
'My feeling is that it's up to us as consumers and American citizens to make the choice about where to spend our money. It's that simple,' she said.
Leah Koch, owner of the Ripped Bodice, said: 'We can never compete with Amazon on the price of books and speed of shipping because we don't employ a private army, and we know that.'
'So, Amazon is not out competitor. Our goal is to provide an experience that you cannot get on Amazon.'
'F*** Bezos. May he be very miserable living alone on the moon,' Koch added.

This is a worthwhile purchase for keeping things tidy between deep cleans, it's very effective and convenient." Another remarked: "This exceeded my expectations. It's quiet enough to run while I'm on calls and the suction power is great for both tile and carpet. I was impressed by how well it navigates around furniture without bumping into things too hard. "The dustbin is easy to empty and setup took less than 10 minutes. It's become part of my daily routine and I don't think I could go back to manual vacuuming now. " However, not everyone was as impressed, with one review stating: "Couldn't find its way back to the charger. Just bumped around into things not cleaning where there is space. Also poor suction." Article continues below Another customer left a glowing five-star review, saying: "The robot vacuum is absolutely fantastic. It cleans so thoroughly that I hardly ever need to do any cleaning myself. While it makes a bit of noise, it's not a problem at all since you can easily schedule it to run while you're out. The battery life is impressive too – it runs long enough to clean the whole house in one go."

Amazon overhauls Wondery podcast studio, cuts 110 jobs

Aug 4 (Reuters) - (AMZN.O), opens new tab is restructuring the Wondery podcast studio by shifting its award-winning narrative podcasts such as "Business Wars" to Audible and consolidating creator-led shows into a new unit, according to a memo seen by Reuters. About 110 employees will be laid off as part of the process, while many Wondery employees will transition to other parts of Amazon, the company said in an emailed statement on Monday. Wondery CEO Jen Sargent will depart the company following a transition period, the memo said. Intense competition in the expensive podcast industry as well as a growing focus on creator-led video content have prompted audio streaming companies including Spotify (SPOT.N), opens new tab to diversify their podcasts as they look to lower costs and attract more users to their platforms. "As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth and monetization strategies compared to audio-first, narrative series," Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch and games at Amazon, wrote in the memo. Wondery was acquired by Amazon in 2021 and has seen podcast revenue quadruple since then as the studio expanded its slate to include video podcasts and creator-driven series, according to the memo. Under the new structure, Wondery's narrative podcast studio - home to shows such as "Dr. Death" and "American Scandal" - along with the Wondery+ subscription service, will move to Audible, the e-commerce giant's audio platform. Its creator-focused podcast team that produces shows including "Mind the Game", "New Heights", and "Armchair Expert" will join a new Creator Services group within Amazon's Talent Services division. This new team will continue to operate the creator-focused podcast studio under the Wondery brand. "By making these changes, we can better support creators in monetizing their content across multiple channels," Amazon said. Bloomberg News first reported on the Wondery overhaul.

It's just a 15-minute walk to the Space Needle and to the iconic Pike Place Market, where you will find the world's first Starbucks, a must-see site for coffee lovers. The hotel is also just a 20-minute cab ride to Seattle's bustling cruise terminal, making it well-situated for passengers before or after a trip. The vibe The hotel feels fresh and new, having only opened in May after replacing and renovating the Denny Park Hotel. It is one of 14 sustainability-focused locations around the world for the 1Hotel group, yet there is a clear local approach. Guests are welcomed into the lobby by a living wall of vegetation in the shape of Washington state's Mount Rainier and a '1' monument using 575 driftwood pieces sourced from private beaches around the Puget Sound by local artist Rebecca Stigora. Nature is brought to life around the hotel with 1,142 plants across the site. Check-in is quick, and a concierge will help take your bags to the room and staff are knowledgeable about the local area. Interiors feature teak wood floors, tapestry wall hangings, and floor-to-ceiling windows with breathtaking city views, including of the Space Needle. Bathrooms are stocked with Bamford products and include both walk-in rain showers and separate tubs. A wooden coin also encourages guests to participate in the '1 Less Thing' program, letting them donate unwanted clothes to local charity Mary's Place. Food and drink Meals are not included in the base rate, but packages can include dining credits. Breakfast at Drift bar is worth the extra money, especially for the Tropical Blue Colada smoothie – a vibrant mix of pineapple, coconut and blue spirulina. Dinner at La Loba offers an inventive fusion of Catalan tapas with Asian influences. Highlights include smoked candy salmon with truffle cream cheese and oversized crispy potato bravas. The menu caters to dietary needs with gluten-free and vegan options such as avocado salad and pesto-seasoned cauliflower. Facilities There is a gym where you can take part in morning yoga sessions and recharge on Peloton bikes and treadmills.
