Soldiers mourn loss of fellow private in tragic elephant-related incident
Xavier Raynard was deployed under Operation CORONA in the Madimbo area of Limpopo.
He was found dead near the Yellow Gate of the Madimbo Operational Base on Sunday afternoon (July 27).
Preliminary reports indicate that he may have been fatally trampled by a herd of elephants while conducting routine patrols in the challenging terrain.
The Madimbo Corridor is a northern military base in Limpopo that borders Zimbabwe and is near nature reserves. It is controlled by the SANDF and is used as a military training zone.
Raynard was carrying out a patrol along the Malala Drift Road when he was killed.
Rear Admiral Prince Tshabalala, director of Defence Corporate Communication, said his service weapon was recovered at the scene.
The SANDF is investigating the incident in collaboration with environmental and wildlife authorities to establish what the full circumstances were.
Tshabalala confirmed a formal board of inquiry has been launched to provide clarity and accountability.
Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Angie Motshekga, Chief of the SANDF General Rudzani Maphwanywa, and acting secretary of Defence Dr Thobekile Gamede have extended their deepest condolences to Raynard's family, friends, and fellow soldiers.
'His unwavering commitment to protecting South Africa will be honoured and remembered with great respect,' said Tshabalala.
Raynard's next of kin, based in Kimberley, Northern Cape, have been formally notified.
Tshabalala pointed out that the SANDF is providing psychosocial support to the family and members of his unit during this difficult time.
He explained that Operation CORONA is a critical national initiative aimed at safeguarding South Africa's borders and combating cross-border crime.
Deployed members face not only security threats but also harsh environmental conditions and risks from wildlife in remote border regions.
'The South African National Defence Force salutes Private Raynard's sacrifice and dedication. May his soul rest in peace,' said Tshabalala.

However, the scales are finally tipping and values and morals that should be guiding us are being re-examined as even religious groups find their environmental voices, recognising that clean air and water, with healthy soil, apart from being constitutional rights, are somewhat critical to all of our survival… the evolution continues to happen. We hope that more people will be encouraged to 'do the right thing', speak up and out, be measured and polite, and start taking responsibility for their own actions while creating a culture of accountability, particularly those who are supposed to be managing the machine of government. Let's promote a 'fit for purpose' attitude with particular regard to people in positions and solutions to the polycrisis situation we are in, and let's build a nation that serves everyone more equitably. Sounds simple on paper, but it's terribly dependent on each and every person making ethical choices as much as possible, being discerning in decisions and not accepting less from authorities, after all they are supposed to be 'leaders' guiding us to better days – choose them wisely. Gayton's son reveals why he'll never take dad's surname
Gayton McKenzie's son, Calvin Le John – the new owner of Siwelele FC, previously SuperSport United – reveals he has no intention of taking his dad's surname. The firstborn of the Minister of Sport, Art, and Culture spoke to Robert Marawa in his first interview as a soccer boss. Speaking on 947, Calvin Le John was questioned on his decision not to take his father's surname. The Siwelele boss revealed that his mother chose to give him her maiden name in her bid to disassociate with Gayton McKenzie, who at the time had been sentenced to 17 years imprisonment at Grootvlie prison for armed robbery. He said, 'She didnt want her child to grow up with the surname of a prisoner. I never changed it. Growing up, I actually felt blessed that I had my mother's surname because I did not want to be directly under my father's shadow. Father dead, mother critically injured in domestic violence shooting in Elardus Park
A mother is fighting for her life and a father is dead after a domestic dispute turned violent in the early hours of Saturday morning at their Elardus Park home. Their teenage daughter, who was asleep during the shooting, is now in the care of trauma counsellors. According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, the shooting happened at approximately 03:30 on Saturday morning. 'Members of the Lyttelton SAPS responded to a report of a shooting incident at a residence in Rietvalleirand, Elardus Park. 'Upon arrival at the scene, members were met by security and emergency medical personnel, who confirmed that a woman had sustained four gunshot wounds to the upper body. 'She was stabilised on the scene and airlifted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.' Van Dyk said preliminary investigations revealed the body of a man, who was found deceased at the scene with a visible gunshot wound to the head. 'A 9mm pistol was recovered next to his body, along with several live rounds and spent cartridges believed to have been discharged from the same firearm.' Medical officials declared the man dead at the scene. 'The couple's 15-year-old daughter was at home during the incident but was asleep in her bedroom at the time. She was unharmed and has since been placed in the care of trauma counsellors, as there is currently no immediate family available in Pretoria.' He furthermore added that the 15-year-old daughter said her mother had recently returned home late after attending a work-related training session. 'It is believed that this led to an argument between the victim and the suspect. The daughter reported that she later awoke to the sound of gunshots, but was unable to confirm the exact events that followed. 'Crime scene experts attended to the scene and conducted a thorough investigation. The firearm was seized and will be sent for ballistic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.' Police are investigating a case of attempted murder and have opened an inquest docket relating to the suspected suicide.
