2nd North East Geology and Mining Ministers' Conclave in Guwahati starting Friday
New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): In a major step towards unlocking the mineral and coal potential of the North Eastern Region, the Ministry of Mines, in collaboration with the Ministry of Coal and the Government of Assam, is organising the 2nd North East Geology and Mining Ministers' Conclave on June 27-28 in Guwahati.
The conclave, being held under the Government of India's vision of 'Viksit Bharat,' will witness participation from all eight North Eastern states.
The Chief Minister of Assam will grace the occasion as Chief Guest, alongside Mining and Geology Ministers from across the region.
The event aims to promote sustainable and scientific mining, improve the ease of doing business in the resource sector, and strengthen centre-state coordination for balanced regional development.
Building on the success of the first conclave held in Nagaland, this year's edition will feature a series of impactful sessions and releases.
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) under the Ministry of Mines will present the latest findings on mineral exploration and unveil key publications dedicated to the region's geology and resource profile.
Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed between central agencies and state governments to accelerate mineral exploration.
The Ministry of Mines will also highlight progress under the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET), which has been supporting several ongoing exploration projects in the region.
India's mineral auction framework has gained strong momentum in recent months.
Since 2024-25, a total of 283 mineral blocks have been put up for auction by the State and Central Governments.
Of these, 161 mineral blocks have been successfully auctioned, bringing the cumulative tally to 515.
This includes five mineral blocks from Assam and four critical mineral blocks from Arunachal Pradesh, opening new avenues for industrial growth and employment in the region.
These auctions underscore the readiness of the North-East to play a central role in India's critical mineral strategy, while also reflecting the government's commitment to transparency and competitiveness in resource allocation.
In parallel, the Ministry of Coal will launch two important publications during the conclave -- the 'Report on Coal Resources & Exploration in North Eastern Region' and a dedicated brochure on commercial coal mining in North East states.
These documents reflect the substantial progress made in recent years, including the successful auction of five coal blocks in the North East region, with a combined peak rated capacity of 1.234 million tonnes per annum.
With over 3.9 lakh meters of drilling planned and 100 per cent utilisation of R&D funds, the Ministry is actively promoting sustainable and smart coal mining practices in the region.
The conclave will also feature NLC India Ltd.'s ambitious plans to set up 1,000 MW of solar power capacity in Assam, contributing to the national target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy by 2030.
The two-day conclave signifies a strong convergence of efforts between the Ministry of Mines and the Ministry of Coal, aligning energy security with regional development and environmental sustainability. The event is expected to serve as a catalyst for future investments, innovation, and inclusive growth in the North Eastern Region. (ANI)

Delhi's roads set for a makeover: 415 km to be rebuilt under Rs 950-crore scheme
By Tanya Chugh New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): In a major infrastructure push, the Delhi government has drawn up a Rs 950-crore plan to reconstruct 415 kilometres of worn-out roads across the city. A proposal in this regard has been sent to the Central government under the Central Road Fund (CRF), with an aim to provide much-needed facelift to key stretches, including the Outer Ring Road, Mathura Road, Najafgarh Road, and Vikas Marg. So far, 150 km of roads have already been repaired, while work is ongoing on another 100 km. A top government source said the proposal has been sent to the Centre, seeking financial assistance to expedite the project. The target for the upcoming financial year is to repair 500 km of roads in the state. Along with the repair of roads, footpaths, and drains, reconstruction will also be undertaken. Construction work will be carried out through e-tendering to complete the project by 2026. The Delhi government hopes to receive financial assistance from the Centre this time, which would help expedite the work. The PWD department has also launched a campaign to fill potholes on the roads. On June 23, the government launched this campaign, during which 3,400 potholes were filled in a single day. 'Our commitment is to give good roads to the people of Delhi. Construction of roads is in progress. We have constructed 150 km of roads and have a target of 500 km for this year. The previous government constructed poor-quality roads. We will recarpet all the roads,' PWD Minister Parvesh Verma told ANI. Citizens can also report road-related complaints through the PWD's website or mobile app. (ANI)

BCI rebukes SILF over opposition to foreign law firm entry, reaffirms commitment to legal reform
New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): The Bar Council of India (BCI) has issued a detailed response to the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF), rejecting its claim of representing the collective voice of the Indian legal fraternity and calling out its opposition to the regulated entry of foreign law firms into India. In a strongly worded statement, the BCI stated that SILF represents less than 2% of the country's 15,000+ law firms and functions as a private, self-appointed body with no statutory or democratic authority. Describing SILF as an elite group shielding narrow commercial interests, the BCI stated it does not speak for the broader legal community. Reinforcing its mandate under the Advocates Act, 1961, the BCI clarified that it is the sole statutory authority responsible for regulating legal education and practice in India. It emphasised that the 2025 Amended Rules, which permit foreign law firms to advise on foreign and international law (but prohibit them from practising Indian law or appearing in courts), were crafted in compliance with Supreme Court rulings and international standards. The BCI dismissed SILF's claims that there are no monopolies in the Indian legal sector, pointing instead to how a few large firms have cornered corporate and arbitration work through exclusive networks. It called SILF's continued resistance a protectionist stance, aimed at preserving existing advantages while excluding young and emerging firms from global opportunities. Criticising SILF's recent public statements, the BCI warned that some language used amounts to professional misconduct under the Bar Council Rules, especially provisions prohibiting misleading publicity and improper conduct by advocates. It announced that disciplinary action may be initiated against individuals responsible for such misrepresentations. The BCI reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive reforms, aimed at unifying law firms under a new democratic and representative platform. It welcomed feedback from law firms nationwide, extended its public consultation deadline, and announced plans to convene a large-scale meeting in Mumbai to finalise its policy decisions with inputs from all stakeholders. Rejecting SILF's claims that foreign entry would harm Indian legal interests, the BCI noted that many countries--including the UK and Singapore--allow foreign lawyers to offer advisory services without impacting domestic legal sovereignty. The BCI's model follows this globally accepted approach. In response, SILF President Lalit Bhasin recently claimed that BCI's allegations were unfounded and questioned whether the move would harm Indian law firms. While reiterating its support for the phased entry of foreign firms, SILF expressed concern over the implementation and alleged that Indian law firms--especially younger ones--are already thriving due to economic growth and digital advancement. The BCI maintained that its reforms are intended to level the playing field, modernise the legal profession, and position India as a global arbitration and legal hub. It emphasised that public sentiment and media support overwhelmingly favour the move and that obstructionist rhetoric from narrow interest groups will not derail progress. (ANI)
