30 Most Important Bears of 2025: Luther Burden III (No. 25)

USA Today3 hours ago
The Chicago Bears are gearing up for an exciting 2025 NFL season, which features some new faces within the organization poised to get the franchise back to its winning ways. That starts with the hiring of Ben Johnson as head coach, as well as overhauling the interior offensive line, adding pieces on defense and a potenital impactful rookie draft class.
Every day from now right up through training camp, we're counting down our 30 Most Important Bears for the 2025 season. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead to 2025 and tackle the biggest question facing them this year.
Next up at No. 25 is wide receiver Luther Burden III, who could serve a key role as a rookie in Ben Johnson's offense.
Background
Position: Wide receiver
Age: 21
Experience: 1st season
2025 cap hit: N/A
2024 recap
Luther Burden III had a career year in his sophomore season at Missouri, where he totaled career highs in receptions (86), yards (1,212) and touchdowns (9) en route to being a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist and Second Team All-American. His production took a dip in the final year of his college career, but he had a team-best 61 receptions for 676 yards and six touchdowns, as well as nine rushes for 115 yards and two scores. He also had four punt returns for 31 yards. Still, Burden was named First Team All-SEC for the second consecutive year. Following his career year in 2023, Burden was projected to be a top-10 pick. But his dip in production was part of the reason why he fell to the Bears in the second round.
2025 outlook
The Bears landed a huge steal in Burden in the second round of the NFL draft, which gives Ben Johnson another weapon to utilize on offense. While Chicago already has its top two receivers in DJ Moore and Rome Odunze, Burden has the potential to make a significant impact as a rookie if utilized to his full potential. Johnson has talked about the importance of the slot receiver in his offense, as that's where the ball typically goes. While Johnson will move guys around, it's worth noting that Burden ran 88% of his routes from the slot over the past two seasons at Missouri. Burden is a speedy, explosive receiver who can line up inside, outside or even out of the backfield.
Big Question: How will Burden factor into Ben Johnson's offense?
The Bears have no shortage of weapons to utilize as Ben Johnson steps into his first year as head coach and offensive play caller. The only problem is there's just one ball to go around, which is a great problem to have. Between DJ Moore and Rome Odunze, along with a 1-2 punch at tight end with Cole Kmet and Colston Loveland, the question is how much Burden will factor in on offense. Given Burden's massive upside and playmaking ability -- which has garnered comparisons to Amon-Ra St. Brown -- Chicago will look to get him as involved as possible. Burden thrived in the slot during college, and that figures to be the position where he can inflict the most damage to opposing defenses.

Dolphins' throwback uniforms garner top billing, timeless recognition

Diehard Dolphins fans know that there's something special about Miami's throwback uniforms. Worn from 1966-1973, these original Dolphins threads housed the perfect 1972 season. It's this uniform that fans and staff remember each year when those champagne bottles pop to commemorate the fact that Miami still stands alone as the NFL's lone franchise to author an unbeaten season. And the Dolphins' throwbacks are receiving their proper recognition from CBS. In its ranking of the NFL's top throwback uniforms and helmets, the Miami Dolphins grabbed the No. 1 spot. The best throwback uniforms in the NFL belong to the Dolphins. Miami's classic uniforms date to their AFL days, the jerseys worn for the 1972 perfect season. The home aqua uniforms were top notch, but the white road uniforms are even better -- and the classic logo remains on the helmet. The Dolphins use their throwback jerseys as their alternate uniforms -- and who can blame them. - Jeff Kerr, CBS The simplicity of the Dolphin wearing the helmet with the Miami "M" jumping through the sunburst. Simple, yet timelessly symbolic. Miami wore its throwbacks twice last season, on Sept. 12 for Thursday Night Football against Buffalo and on Nov. 28 on Thanksgiving against the Green Bay Packers.

Former Minnesota Vikings LB heads out west in PFF's 2014 NFL re-draft

The NFL Draft remains the second-biggest event in the NFL calendar behind the Super Bowl. Like it or not, it also remains one of the biggest things that fans and media enjoy going back and analyzing to see "what could have been." Pro Football Focus has done a good job this offseason by starting a re-draft series that we have been tracking here on Bucs Wire. In their latest draft, they looked back on, it just so happens to be one of the more impactful ones in recent memory for the Minnesota Vikings franchise: The 2014 NFL Draft. Anthony Barr was the Vikings' top draft pick in their class in the 2014 NFL Draft. In the re-draft, he did not get to the Vikings but instead stayed closer to home and his college of UCLA by being drafted by the Denver Broncos. Sikkema writes up the pick, saying, "Barr made four Pro Bowls with the Vikings and earned an 83.8 career PFF pass-rushing grade. He finished his second season, 2015, as one of the 10 most valuable linebackers in the league, according to PFF WAR. Barr and Brandon Marshall would have formed one of the better linebacker units in the NFL." Barr would have a Super Bowl ring to his credit this way, while the Vikings would be left scrambling for more defensive help than they would have imagined.

Browns' Deshaun Watson gets married to longtime girlfriend: 'We sailing away'

Deshaun Watson has a ring before the 2025 season even starts. The Cleveland Browns quarterback tied the knot with longtime girlfriend, Jilly Anais, earlier this week. The couple posted their wedding bands on social media, via the New York Post. Watson's shirt had the date of "07.02.25" stitched on his wrist. The couple took a boat trip around Miami with some close family members to celebrate the marriage. The Watsons got engaged this past March. They posted a video to Instagram of themselves dancing outside their car on the road on Friday. "We sailing away," they wrote. After rupturing his right Achilles tendon for the second time in three months, it remains unclear whether Watson will miss out on the entire 2025 season. He was initially injured during an October game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but he later ruptured his Achilles for a second time in January. Earlier this month, the Browns reworked Watson's contract to clear more cap space before the start of the new league year. According to the Associated Press, the restructuring cleared up nearly $36 million in cap space. It was the second time in three months that the team restructured his lucrative contract. Watson was acquired by the Browns in 2022 after he signed a fully guaranteed $230 million contract. But the 29-year-old quarterback has only appeared in 19 games for the team after he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in 2023 and an Achilles tendon injury this past season. He was also suspended for 13 games due to sexual misconduct allegations during his time with the Houston Texans, and he hadn't played the entire 2021 season. Cleveland made several moves regarding the quarterback position, trading for Kenny Pickett, bringing back Joe Flacco, and drafting both Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
