Relief to farmers as IMD predicts normal rainfall in Aug

Patna: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast normal rainfall in Aug, with an average expected rain of around 271.9 millimeters. This comes as a relief to the farmers of the state, who have faced a significant rain deficit in June and July, with a shortfall of 41% compared to seasonal averages. Normal rain in Aug is crucial to support paddy transplantation and other Kharif crop activities. In June and July, deficient rain in the state posed a challenge to agricultural activities. The critical period between June 15 and 30, which is important for the nursery and transplantation of long-duration paddy varieties, was severely affected. These high-yield crops, which typically have a growth cycle of 140-145 days, could not be planted by many farmers. As a result of the shortfall—a 41% deficit compared to seasonal averages in July—farmers who were able to plant crops faced significant losses. Some were forced to use expensive irrigation facilities, leading to a high cost of agriculture input. With a recent increase in rainfall activity in the last week of July and the IMD's forecast for normal rainfall in Aug, the water deficiency in crops is expected to decrease. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gentle, Needle-Free Way to Monitor Blood Sugar—Now Being Tried by Seniors Zakdavi Undo Abdul Sattar, a senior climate scientist at Rajendra Prasad Central Agriculture University, said the recent rainfall is beneficial for paddy and other Kharif crops. "Farmers can now focus on cultivating short-duration crop varieties. However, they must complete paddy transplantation by Aug 10 to get high yield," he said. Meanwhile, the IMD has issued an alert of heavy rainfall in the northern districts of the state till Monday and on Aug 7 and 8. Heavy rainfall alert along with thunderstorms and lightning was also issued for Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Siwan, Vaishali, Samastipur, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Sheohar, West and East Champaran, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Suapul, Araria, Kishanganj and Madhepura in the next 48 hours. Representative Image (ANI image) A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck several parts of Pakistan early Saturday morning, causing panic among residents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and the capital Islamabad, as reported by ARY News. The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) reported that the earthquake occurred at 2.04 am PST at a depth of 102 kilometers. Its epicentre was located in the Hindukush mountain region in Afghanistan. Tremors were also felt across various regions in Afghanistan and Tajikistan, the NSMC confirmed. In Pakistan, the tremors were reported in multiple districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Swat, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Karak, Dir, Mardan, Mohmand, Shangla, Hangu, Swabi, Haripur, and Abbottabad. Tremors were also felt in several parts of Punjab province including cities such as Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Attock, Taxila, Murree, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Ferozwala and Muridke. Although the earthquake caused no reported loss of life or property, it led to widespread panic. Many residents rushed out of their homes in fear and began reciting verses from the holy Quran, according to ARY News. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dolly Parton, 79, Removes Her Makeup and Stuns Everyone The Noodle Box Undo Pakistan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, as it lies at the intersection of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This collision zone makes the region highly vulnerable to frequent seismic activities. High-risk areas include Balochistan , Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, which are located near major fault lines like the Main Central Thrust. Punjab, situated on the northwestern edge of the Indian plate, also remains susceptible. Sindh, though relatively less prone to earthquakes is also not free from risk due to its tectonic positioning. One of the most powerful earthquakes in the country's history was the 1945 Balochistan earthquake that measured 8.1 in magnitude.
