Netflix action thriller that's 'John Wick meets Taken' dethrones Tom Hardy movie
Netflix fans are hooked on a gripping action thriller that's being dubbed as a 'twisted Taken', and it's even outshone a recent Tom Hardy blockbuster.
Exterritorial hit the streaming giant just days after Hardy's Havoc made its debut. Despite Havoc's swift ascent to the top of Netflix's most-watched movie charts, it has already been toppled.
The film that's pulled off this feat is the German-made Exterritorial. As of now, it's reigning supreme at number one in both the US and UK as the most viewed movie among subscribers, edging out Havoc by a spot in both regions.
Exterritorial spins the tale of ex-Special Forces soldier Sara, portrayed by Jeanne Goursaud, whose young son mysteriously vanishes during a visit to the US consulate in Frankfurt.
Adding to the intrigue, no one seems to recall him ever setting foot in the building. Sara realises that the German authorities have no power within the consulate, and if she's forced to leave, she may never see her son again. Unaware of a sinister conspiracy brewing around her, Sara plunges deeper into the consulate's maze in a desperate search for her son.
Viewers might recognise Goursaud from her stint in the Netflix series Barbarians. She shares the screen with Scottish actor Dougray Scott, known for his roles in The Crow Girls, X-Men, and as the antagonist in Taken 3, reports Surrey Live.
The film has drawn numerous comparisons to the Liam Neeson-starring franchise due to its premise and action-packed sequences. Movie Web notes: "Netflix continues to deliver exactly what many action movie fans are looking for with its latest foray into the genre, which is streaming on the platform now. Taking its cues from the beloved Liam Neeson-led action thriller Taken, but with more twists and turns."
Similarly, Tom's Guide recommends the film to fans of Taken, stating: "What Exterritorial lacks in narrative surprises, it more than makes up for in its action sequences and tension-building. There's plenty to enjoy in this action-thriller, especially if you're in the mood for a fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping ride."
While one critic acknowledged that the film falls short of cinematic excellence, they still found it entertaining. They commented: "The situations are far-fetched... a ton of plot conveniences are introduced into the storytelling... the arcs get a little too convoluted for their own good... and the ending exposition dump is uninspired. And despite all that, I was still mostly entertained."
Netflix viewers who have watched the film have taken to social media to share their opinions. One user raved: "Wow wow wow. 10000/100. Watch this movie! ! Loved it. It's like a mix of Taken and Extraction but with a female protagonist."
One viewer was pleasantly surprised, sharing: "You ever click on a random movie and then sit there like 'Wait... this is actually GOOD'? That was me with Exterritorial. Totally worth it!"
Meanwhile, another fan took to X, posting: "Just watched Exterritorial on Netflix a gritty German action-thriller packed with raw fight scenes and a fierce performance by Jeanne Goursaud. Lena Dunham on fatphobia, dating advice and her new London rom-com Too Much
Lena Dunham is almost synonymous with New York City. The US actress, writer and director rose to fame with her award-winning semi-autobiographical series Girls, which followed four 20-something women as they navigated love, life and friendship in the Big Apple. But her latest project - a Netflix rom-com loosely based on her life over the last few years - is set on the other side of the Much follows Jessica (Megan Stalter), who moves from New York to London after breaking up with her boyfriend, and falls in love with punk musician Felix (Will Sharpe). Just as Dunham did when she moved to London in 2021, Jessica quickly learns the important things about the UK: everybody loves Paddington, the Jaffa Cake debate is highly contentious (it's definitely a biscuit) and a "housing estate" isn't the sprawling gardens of a lavish manor tells the BBC that while Too Much has "superficial similarities" to her life and is "about 5% autobiographical", she didn't see herself ever playing the show's protagonist in the way she did in Girls. "I didn't consider Jessica to be me - she's inspired by my life but is her own character and was written with Megan in mind," she says. Megan Stalter says Girls "was all about sex and Too Much is about falling in love", which is a similar to how Dunham sees the show. There was also another reason she chose to step away from the spotlight. While filming Girls, in her 20s, Dunham's body was heavily scrutinised and last year, she told the New Yorker she "was not up for having my body dissected again". She explains that body shaming was part of the reason she stepped further behind the camera. "Just being perceived was overwhelming," she says. Dunham has spent the past few years focusing on writing projects that don't centre her as an actor. She believes society has made some strides towards being more body positive, but says the culture we live in is still "so deeply fatphobic, misogynistic, racist and ageist and that informs our dynamic with our body". The 39-year-old has been vocal about challenges she's faced with her health, particularly her endometriosis, which led her to have a hysterectomy aged 31. Asked how her relationship with her body has changed since then, she says she's developed a new love for how she looks."I've been able to have a relationship with my body that exists outside of the cultural pressures and I feel lucky for that." As well as reflecting on how her self image has changed, Dunham also says she's learned a lot since her 20s. Having been in the spotlight for more than decade, the actress has had her fair share of 2017, she defended Girls writer Murray Miller when he was accused of sexual assault. Dunham later apologised, saying it was "absolutely the wrong time" to share her perspective. Miller vehemently denied the claims and was not charged. She also apologised for a "distasteful joke" she had made on a podcast saying she wished she'd experienced a termination when discussing the US abortion."I thought, back then, it was important to just keep going and be tough no matter what happened," she reflects."I was so focused on work and not letting any of the noise in but I wish I had allowed myself to take more time and space. We all have to acknowledge our own complexities and sensitivities but it's hard to wrap your head around that when you're in your 20s." 'I've felt like I'm too much' Dunham's new 10-episode series stars Hacks actor Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe, best known for playing Ethan Spiller in The White Lotus and films such as A Real 38, says he relates to the challenges his character faces, as "everyone carries baggage from their previous relationship" and feels vulnerable when they enter a new relates to her character too. The 34-year-old says she often "felt like she was too much" in her 20s but with time, has come to be proud of her who she is. Written with Dunham's husband, musician Luis Felber, Too Much focuses on the evolution of one romantic relationship. It's refreshing in its realness - from serious conversations between Jessica and Felix to the fact Jessica's media salary stretches to a housing estate in east London rather than a Bridget Jones-esque flat in Borough Market. I ask Dunham if she has any dating tips for women in their 20s, given she's been through the rollercoaster of trying to find a life partner. She says the concept of dating has changed over the years, and back in the late noughties, it was "considered a last resort or a strange thing to meet someone online".Looking back, Dunham wishes she would have allowed herself to understand what she really wanted rather than just seeing the cultural expectations that were placed on her. "If I was letting myself understand my own desire, my 20s would have looked really different romantically."Too Much is released on Netflix on 10 July.

Gripping prequel soars up Netflix charts as fans declare it 'best in franchise'
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has just dropped on Netflix, and fans are already calling it the 'best film in the franchise'. It's proving so popular, in fact, that following its Netflix debut this week, it's climbed into the top 10. Released in November 2023, the action/adventure movie is based on the 2020 novel of the same name, serving as a prequel to 2012's hugely successful The Hunger Games, which starred Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. Set decades before the iconic Mockingjay era, this dark and dazzling prequel tells the origin story of a young Coriolanus Snow—the man who would later become Panem's most feared president. Long before he wore white suits and ordered rebel bombings, Snow was just another ambitious teenager clawing his way out of poverty and into power. He's played by Tom Blyth with an unnerving mix of charm, desperation, and icy control, making the fall from grace feel both inevitable and hard to watch. Opposite him is Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird, a District 12 tribute with a voice that hypnotises and a will to survive that rivals Katniss', though she's anything but a carbon copy. Lucy Gray is no rebel, and Zegler cleverly brings her to life with her electric performance. From her haunting ballads to her quiet tricks, she commands every scene she's in—and fans can't stop talking about her. 'I like how they made another strong female character without having to resort to Katniss' clone who fights good,' @nogoodpho wrote on Reddit. Add in a show-stopping performance from Jason Schwartzman as Lucky Flickerman and Viola Davis as the terrifying Dr. Gaul, and you've got a film that's part dystopia, part musical, and 100% watch-worthy. When it hit cinemas in late 2023, Songbirds and Snakes received mixed reviews—some critics loved its ambition, while others were put off by its slow burn and darker tone. It did, however, gross $349million (£255.6m) off its $100m (£73.2m) budget. And now that it's streaming, audiences are giving it—and its 64% Rotten Tomatoes score—a second look, and this time, they're hooked. Social media is buzzing with praise, fan theories, and 'I told you so' posts from people who always believed the prequel would be a game-changer. @nolanpflan wrote: 'In my opinion this hands down the best movie in the Hunger Games franchise.' 'I was gripped the entire runtime and never felt an ounce of boredom. This is Panem at its most fragile and dangerous, and the Capitol isn't the polished powerhouse we're used to—it's the definition of chaos, and it is just starting to realise how powerful fear can be.
