Anwar: Appreciation package to be announced tomorrow or Wednesday
PUTRAJAYA (July 21): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said a special gesture of appreciation for the people is expected to be announced tomorrow or Wednesday.
He said more time is needed to finalise the announcement following the Unity Government retreat in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan yesterday.
'The retreat focused on explaining government policies while also listening to public concerns, which led me to consider certain changes and announcements to help ease these issues.
'I mentioned that I would make an announcement within a day or two (whether in the form of additional measures or otherwise) but it requires some careful review,' he said at the Prime Minister's Department monthly assembly here today.
On July 19 in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Anwar had hinted that that the extraordinary appreciation to be announced would involve government measures to address the rising cost of living.
Anwar acknowledged that although policies are carefully planned at the federal level, there is often a perceived disconnect between policy implementation and the reality experienced by the people.
'When we plan, we believe we've done our best. But sometimes, the views at the grassroots level differ. There seems to be a disconnect, partly due to political spin, partly due to misinformation — but some concerns are genuine and must be taken seriously,' he said.
At the same time, Anwar rejected claims that the people are burdened by the Sales and Services Tax (SST) and base electricity tariffs, describing the 'tariff hike, tax hike' narrative as a distortion of facts that does not reflect the actual situation.
'I ask, are you representing the people or the business tycoons? Some large industries may be affected, but 85 per cent of the public are exempt from the increase,' he said.
Anwar said the revised tariffs introduced by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) target only high-profit industries, with no impact on domestic users.
He added that the new electricity tariff structure has not resulted in a general increase in electricity costs. On the contrary, it has led to a 19 per cent reduction for the majority of users.
'There are also additional reductions for consumption during non-peak hours. But the key point is, once implemented, this is the fact — there was no increase.
'Overall, electricity costs fell by 19 per cent, from 55.95 sen (Rp3) to 45.40 sen (Rp4). So, if you compare your latest bill to the previous month's, it is lower,' he said. announcement anwar ibrahim appreciation electricity lead tariffs

KADA, NAFAS Boost National Agriculture Through Tautan Tani Programme
KOTA BHARU, July 24 (Bernama) -- The collaboration between the Kemubu Agricultural Development Authority (KADA) and the National Farmers Organisation (NAFAS) is expected to strengthen the country's agricultural sector through the enhancement of input supply chains and more structured, strategic capacity-building for farmers, said KADA chairman Khalid Abdul Samad. He expressed appreciation to NAFAS for its willingness to be KADA's key strategic partner in implementing the Tautan Tani programme, which he described as an essential platform for elevating the status of the agricultural sector. "The close cooperation between KADA and NAFAS is a timely and strategic move to ensure national food security, especially in today's context, which demands multi-stakeholder collaboration to address the challenges of the agro-food sector. "I am confident that the combination of KADA's expertise in area development and human capital, along with NAFAS' strength in logistics and agricultural input supply chains, can create a more sustainable, productive, and competitive agricultural ecosystem," he said during today's launch of the Tautan Tani programme here. Khalid said such programmes are a manifestation of both agencies' commitment to strengthening agricultural knowledge and practices among farmers, while also promoting a thriving culture of collaboration within the industry. "The initiative of organising product introduction talks and factory visits is an effective effort to augment farmers' understanding of the agricultural input value chain, while also raising awareness on the proper and efficient use of fertilisers. "Farmers must be informed consumers who understand fertiliser contents, the functions of nutrients and their impact on crop yields, and the use of pesticides that must adhere to safety guidelines to ensure quality harvests and environmental protection," he said. He said that the briefing that KADA conducted on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) is crucial in ensuring that the country's agricultural produce meets international standards to penetrate the global market. "The sharing sessions by farmers are also significant as they provide opportunities to learn from one another, share successes, techniques, and innovations from the field, which are often more practical than theory alone," he said.

Over 60 European Parliament Members Demand Emergency Meeting To Push Action Against Israel
ISTANBUL, July 24 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Over 60 members of the European Parliament (MEPs) demanded emergency meeting to push actions against Israel in a letter sent to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Thursday, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. Marc Botenga, a Belgian MEP from the Left group, said on X that they had written to Kallas, demanding an emergency meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council be convened immediately to propose action against Israel. "We are writing to you today to demand immediate action is taken given the appalling humanitarian situation in Gaza and the continued Israeli attacks on Palestinians at aid distribution sites which have so far resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 people," the MEPs wrote. bootstrap slideshow They said the recent EU-Israel aid agreement delivered "no tangible change" in conditions on the ground, highlighting that as children die of starvation EU responds with "weak words and no action." "Let us be clear, history will not look kindly on the EU's silence and complicity in the face of starvation and genocide in Gaza and European citizens are using their voices to demand real action. 'As their elected representatives, we put it to you that there can be no more double standards, no more silence and no more complicity," the lawmakers said. The MEPs demanded adoption of a full suite of sanctions against Israel, sanctions on the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and individuals within the organisation, proposal of measures following the review of EU-Israel Association Agreement and lobbying member states to implement a two-way arms embargo. "Every day we do not take action is another day where Palestinians in Gaza are left to starve or be killed. Action is needed now," they said. -- BERNAMA-ANADOLU

[UPDATED] Anwar urges calm as Thai-Cambodian border tensions rise
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has voiced concern over the ongoing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, saying that peace is the only option. He said he had already sent messages to both the Cambodian and Thai prime ministers and hopes to speak with them later this evening. "This development is concerning. They are important members of Asean and close to Malaysia. "I have sent messages to both prime ministers and look forward to speaking with them this evening. "At the very least, we hope they will stand down and try to negotiate. They have tried (to negotiate), but I still think peace is the only option," he told reporters after attending the Asean Semiconductor Summit here today. Present were Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. When asked how the dispute might affect trade within Asean, Anwar said it was premature to draw conclusions, saying the situation is temporary. He said both Thailand and Cambodia have their nations best interests at heart and are seeking a peaceful resolution. On whether there would be a stern warning issued in his capacity as Asean chair, Anwar said no, adding that Malaysia hoped to engage both leaders and express its views. On comments that no Asean country has stepped forward to mediate, Anwar said, "No, I had initial discussions with both prime ministers last month, and we've since sent messages to them. "I am looking forward to speaking with them again later," he said. Thailand launched air strikes while Cambodia fired rockets and artillery, killing a civilian, in an escalation of their border dispute. The clash centres around the Emerald Triangle, a border area shared by Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, which houses several ancient temples.
