US skier Lauren Macuga wins downhill portion of new team combined event at world championships

SAALBACH-HINTERGLEMM, Austria (AP) — American skier Lauren Macuga posted the fastest time in the downhill portion of the new team combined event at the Alpine skiing world championships on Tuesday.
Her teammate Paula Moltzan will start the slalom portion later Tuesday with an advantage of 0.23 seconds over Germany 1, where Emma Aicher ran the downhill and Lena Duerr was scheduled to race the slalom.
Austria 1, with downhiller Mirjam Puchner and slalom racer Katharina Liensberger, was 0.38 seconds behind in third.
Downhill world champion Breezy Johnson, who teams with Mikaela Shiffrin, trailed by 0.51 seconds in fourth.
Lindsey Vonn finished a full two seconds behind Johnson and left her teammate AJ Hurt with a deficit of 2.51 seconds for the slalom.
Vonn had campaigned to race with Shiffrin on an American team that would have united the two most successful skiers in World Cup history, but the coaching staff decided to form the teams based on 'season-best results' in both downhill and slalom.
The team combined entails one racer competing in a downhill run and another in a slalom run, with their two times added up to determine the final results. Each nation can enter up to four pairings.
The team combined will make its debut at next year's Milan-Cortina Olympics and was first held at elite level on Tuesday, after it had been tested at junior world championships.

Departing Son Heung-min in tears as Tottenham draws with Newcastle in Seoul

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A day after announcing his imminent departure from Tottenham after 10 years with the club, Son Heung-min was given an emotional farewell Sunday by his teammates, Newcastle players and almost 65,000 fans at Seoul World Cup Stadium. The pre-season friendly in South Korea between the Premier League teams ended 1-1, with the high point being Son's second-half exit in likely his last game for Tottenham. The 33-year-old captain was surrounded by both sets of players before eventually sitting on the bench in tears. 'First we had the walk around and then the teammates gathered around and he was emotional,' Tottenham coach Thomas Frank said. 'In the changing room it was more of the same. I just said a few things but not much because it's about Sonny and then he said a few things. It was beautiful.' Newcastle manager Eddie Howe also paid tribute to the South Korea forward. 'The reaction was instinctive from my players. I think that speaks volumes about him,' Howe said. 'I think he's seen as one of the game's great Premier League players. It's not just the talent he has but the way he has carried himself over the years.' Son, who has been linked with a move to Los Angeles FC, scored 173 goals in 454 games for the London club but was unable to find the target in what Frank said is likely to be his last appearance. His trademark 'camera' goal celebration was, however, borrowed by Brennan Johnson who put Tottenham ahead after four minutes with a low shot from the edge of the area. Maddison injured With less than 10 minutes remaining, Tottenham's James Maddison was stretchered off after going down injured. 'We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before,' Frank said. The midfielder is likely to miss the UEFA Super Cup between Europa League winner Tottenham against Champions League victor Paris Saint-Germain on Aug. 13. The Premier League season starts two days later. ___

Palacios: "I always dream of returning to River"

In an interview with Trivela, Bayer Leverkusen's Exequiel Palacios cut a calm figure despite the various changes in personnel at the club. "The transfer window is open and there's plenty of time, but I'm relaxed, training and preparing for the start of the Bundesliga. My mind is now on Leverkusen. We'll see what happens later," said the midfielder, when speaking to the Brazilian sports outlet. On a personal note, the 26-year-old highlighted that he would love to return to River Plate where his senior career first blossomed. "I always dream of returning to River. But right now my mind is on Leverkusen, in Europe, I'm not thinking about going back. 'I have friends at the club [River Plate], and I keep following them,' the Argentinean explained with a smile. Palacios spent 5 years at 'Los Millonarios' before joining Die Werkself for a reported €21.5million fee in 2020.

Marlie Packer cleared for opening match of England's World Cup campaign

England flanker Marlie Packer will be available to feature in the opening match of the World Cup after being handed a one-match ban for her red card in Saturday's win over Spain. The 35-year-old was sent off in the second half of the Red Roses' 97-7 warm-up victory in Leicester following a clumsy clearout on the left leg of Spain full-back Claudia Pena. Packer's suspension rules her out of her country's final warm-up match, away to France on Saturday. Hosts England begin the World Cup on Friday, August 22 against the United States in Sunderland. In determining the sanction, World Rugby's foul play review committee noted Packer accepted foul play occurred but she did not agree the offence warranted a red card. Her challenge, which did not result in injury to Harlequins player Pena, was deemed to be 'reckless'. The committee decided the offence warranted a two-match ban but opted to award full 50 per cent mitigation. England's 15-try success at Welford Road was Packer's first match as captain since being replaced in the full-time role by Zoe Aldcroft in January. The Saracens forward, who has 111 Test caps, led the Red Roses to back-to-back Six Nations Grand Slams in 2023 and 2024 and is one of head coach John Mitchell's vice-captains.
