How North Sea tanker crash could impact wildlife-rich coastline

Academics have raised fears over the ecological impact the dramatic crash involving an oil tanker and cargo vessel could have on the Norfolk coastline.
The two ships – including one carrying jet fuel - went up in flames in the North Sea off the coast of East Yorkshire on Monday.
Although the air quality at ground level has been recorded as at normal levels, experts said the event could damage the environment of the protected Norfolk coastline.
Environmental biologist Prof Ben Garrod said "we should be doing all we can to ensure this never happens again".
Thirty six people were rescued from the collision and one crew member remained unaccounted for.
Prof Garrod, from the University of East Anglia's School of Biological Sciences, said the coast's shallow bay, The Wash, could be particularly impacted.
"The Wash is recognised for its local, national and international ecological importance for flora and fauna alike," he said.
"Some migrate there, others breed there, and for many species of plants, fungi, and animals, it's home.
"The possible addition of tonnes of highly soluble toxic material which shuts down the respiration system into such a fragile and important habitat will likely have far-reaching impacts on our local wildlife, especially fish, birds and mammals.
"We should be doing all we can to monitor the impact that the release of tonnes of ecologically damaging chemicals has on our fragile marine environment."
The collision occurred at about 10:00 GMT, sparking fires and a mass evacuation, with one crew member saying the incident "came from out of the blue".
The Stena Immaculate ship, the US-flagged oil and chemical tanker, was carrying jet fuel on behalf of the US military.
The Solong meanwhile, a Portuguese-flagged container vessel, denied that it was transporting 15 containers of sodium cyanide.
"There are four empty containers that have previously contained the hazardous chemical and these containers will continue to be monitored," said Ernst Russ, the ship's owner.
Dr Paul Johnston, senior scientist at Greenpeace Research Laboratories at the University of Exeter, said he was "very concerned".
"The wind is blowing from the north and will drive any material that is released towards the north Norfolk coast," he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.
"There are bird colonies, there will be seals hauled out, dolphins and porpoises passing through the area and animals, together with fish and marine vertebrate.
"[They will] all be very vulnerable to toxic events, from both oils and chemicals."
Videos from the scene showed large clouds of smoke billowing out from the tanker, and the firm which managed the Stena Immaculate reported "multiple explosions".
"The jet fuel will continue burning [but] the heavy fuel oil is more of a problem if it comes ashore - it will fell beaches and be very difficult to clean up," added Dr Johnston.
"Any containers that go over the side are likely to be a navigational hazard in so far as any ship that strikes them could become disabled or even sink."
When asked if he thought this could result in the largest environmental disaster for a generation, he said it was a "very difficult thing to predict".
"And that's why so much effort is being put into salvage efforts in order to minimise the amount of material entering the sea.
"An ounce of prevention is worth many tonnes of cure but what we can learn from previous events in terms of clean-up is that it is very, very difficult."
Prof Alastair Grant, from the University of East Anglia's school of environmental sciences, said "a detailed evaluation" of the environmental risks posed by the jet fuel would need to be conducted.
"It contains up to 25% aromatic hydrocarbons, which are relatively toxic and slow to break down in the environment," he said.
"This makes it approximately 50 times more toxic to aquatic life than diesel oil, which in turn is more toxic than crude oil."
These concerns were also echoed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust (NWT), which said "any pollution spillage could be devastating" for habitats in the area.
A spokesperson said: "Depending on wind direction and contaminants, The Wash and North Norfolk coast, including NWT Holme Dunes nature reserve could potentially be at risk.
"These areas are home to internationally important populations of seabirds and fragile habitats.
"We'll continue to keep a close eye on the situation and work with marine authorities if needed."
While the incident happened in UK waters, the responsibility for the investigation will fall to the United States and Portugal.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch, however, is already gathering evidence and undertaking a preliminary assessment of the accident.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is also "rapidly assessing" the potential environment impact of the collision.
When it is considered safe to do so, the BBC understands the MCA will deploy equipment to contain and disperse the oil spills.
The government agency is also working with the owners of the ships and the Department for Transport to understand potential risks to public health.
According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), any public health risk on shore is deemed to be very low.
Labour MP Heidi Alexander, the transport secretary, said she was grateful to HM Coastguard, the RNLI and emergency services for their response.
"They were on the scene swiftly, have helped rescue those in immediate danger and I know they will continue to work tirelessly over the coming days.
"My thoughts are with all those involved, especially the family of the missing crew member.
"I am working closely with the MCA as they conduct an assessment of any counter pollution response which may be required over the coming days."

From a dark sky site in Portugal's Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve, Portuguese astrophotographer Miguel Claro captured stellar views of the sun's chromosphere—the orange-red layer of the sun's atmosphere—over the last few years. The sun produces energy in its core through a process called nuclear fusion. That energy travels outward to the sun's atmosphere, producing an extremely complex and dynamic environment with a variety of special phenomena, including solar tornadoes and solar prominences. 'Photographing the sun is as demanding as it is incredible,' Claro says. When he looks at the sun through his equipment, he sees 'that the sun is always featuring something new—something that wasn't there the day before.' Below is a slew of fascinating features captured from our host star. A time-lapse of this solar prominence reveals a tornado of plasmic activity. This time-lapse, taken April 24, 2025, showcases a twister on the sun. A solar tornado is created when magnetic fields swirl a tornado-like filament of boiling plasma in the sun's atmosphere. According to NASA's space-based Solar Dynamics Observatory, they can rotate at speeds up to 186,000 miles per hour. (For comparison, tornadoes on Earth only reach speeds of 300 miles per hour.) Scientists estimate there are as many as 11,000 solar tornadoes above the sun's surface at any given moment. A solar flare is documented on April 30, 2022, from the Dark Sky Alqueva region in Portugal. According to Spaceweather, 'the explosion still produced enough radiation for a strong shortwave radio blackout over the mid-Atlantic Ocean and Europe.' The solar chromosphere is seen on May 10, 2024, showing the most severe geomagnetic storm of the past 20 years, which created aurora borealis phenomena across the Northern hemisphere. A large solar prominence captured on April 24, 2025. A plasma eruption, caused by the sun's churning plasma tangling its magnetic field, is captured on June 15, 2025. Claro notes the phenomenon "resembles braids of hair." The activity from this solar storm created aurora borealis across the Northern Hemisphere, seen as far south as Texas and Arizona. On May 10, 2024, one of the most severe solar storms in over two decades hit Earth. Solar storms happen when sudden, strong bursts of charged particles from the sun hit Earth's atmosphere. They can trigger a beautiful light show in the form of auroras and can also wreak havoc on earthly technologies like power grids and our fleet of space-based satellites.

Study explores link between maternal asthma and ASD development in children

According to the World Health Organization, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects approximately 10% of children globally. ASD is theorised to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, including maternal asthma. Maternal asthma, defined as asthma existing in mothers prior to childbirth, is thought to cause ASD by altering the mothers' immune response, which then changes the levels of hormones required for foetal brain development. Previous studies have shown an association between asthma in mothers and ASD development in their children, however these results had yet to be validated by a meta-analysis. In research published in July 2025 in Nature, Jingfang Zheng and colleagues conducted a meta-analysis study that measured the association between having an asthmatic mother and ASD development. The study found that children of asthmatic mothers had a 36% increased odds of developing ASD compared to children of asthma-free mothers. To observe the effects of maternal asthma and odds of children developing ASD, this study conducted a meta-analysis using electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library), covering studies published from the inception of the databases to October 2024. Studies were included in the meta-analysis if mothers in the exposed group were asthmatic, mothers in the control group were asthma-free, the outcome was a prevalence of ASD in the mothers' children, and if the study design was either a case-control or a cohort study. From the selection process, eight studies were selected (five in the US, one in Sweden, one multicentre, and one in Taiwan and mainland China). Additionally, subgroup analysis by the child's sex was carried out using a meta-analysis of two studies (both US-based). The joint sample size of the eight studies was 152,697 participants with maternal asthma and 1,809,488 without maternal asthma. Children of asthmatic mothers had a 36% increased odds of developing ASD compared to children of asthma-free mothers. The effects of maternal asthma on ASD development differed based on the child's sex, with only male children of asthmatic mothers being observed to have a statistically significant increased odds of ASD development, with a 28% increased odds of developing ASD, compared to those with asthma-free mothers. This study by Zheng and colleagues provides evidence of maternal asthma being a risk factor for ASD in children, and that this risk is especially pronounced for male children. However, the certainty of these trends was classified as low, due to the study design and variation in results across the studies. Therefore, more studies assessing the relationship between maternal asthma and ASD risk are required to validate these findings. GlobalData epidemiologists forecast that in the 16 major markets: (the US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, Japan, China, Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, and South Korea), diagnosed prevalent cases of ASD in men of all ages will decrease from 5.9 million cases in 2025 to 5.7 million cases in 2031, and cases in women of all ages will decrease from two million cases in 2025 to 1.9 million cases in 2031.
